Vacationland Woodies in Maine, a display of woodie wagons and convertibles from Maine s coastal and camping heritage.
http://www.ohtm.org/woodies.html
Though the exhibit Woodies in Maine closed in the fall of 2001 several of the vehicles exhibited remain in our collection. To view information on our current exhibits and our complete collection, click to go to our Home Page
W oodie (woody), the name evokes images of beaches, weekend getaways, and even surfing. Dating back in design to the 1800s, the Woodie automobile was a carryover from the days of wooden wagons. The earliest woodie body can be seen on the 1900 Bronson Wagon, and closely mirrored on the 1925 Model T, positioned side by side on display for comparative purposes. The early wooden autos emerged from an age where wood was the material of choice, used in all horse drawn carriages, and even in the framing and bodywork of early automobiles. As all-metal construction became more economical, wooden construction became an object of prestige. Hand craftsmanship became an exception, where it had once been the rule, and the Woodie as we know it was born.
A panoramic view showing part of the new exhibit
Wooden construction of automobiles predates the Woodie era, as wooden bodies were around long before the Woodies we know today. Many, if not most, early automobile manufactures relied upon wooden body and frame construction, such as that performed by coachmakers. The 1885 Benz, 1903 Mercedes Simplex, 1904 Stanley Runabout, 1920 Maxwell Town Car, and a wide variety of other early examples of automobiles relied upon wooden construction to some degree, but are not considered Woodies.

A few miles south, a collector in 1946 took on the rebuilding of a 1907 Stanley Steamer and this project has grown into more than 80 antique automobiles at the Auto Museum in Wells . The collection now includes five Steamers and other vintage brass headlamp antiques many dating to before 1915. the collection includes antique coin games, arcade memorabilia, and nickelodeons. If your passion runs to steam trains rather than autos or trolleys, a short drive north along the coast will take you to The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum with tracks along Casco Bay in the beautifully restored waterfront district of Portland. Here crews run daily passenger trains past the old forts, ship terminals, and lighthouses of Portland Harbor. Crews fired up the Museum's four steam locomotives for special events and holiday weekends. A huge hit with train buffs is the "Guest Engineer" program where weekend visitors learn how to run the locomotive. They then run the steam engine up and down the tracks along the bay.

  • See also: Provision of facilities for pedestrians and bicycles [Revised 09/18/2008] Eligibility Principle: A facility for pedestrians and bicycles should be consistent with the provisions of 23 U.S.C. 217 . The project must relate to surface transportation for nonmotorized use. Transportation enhancement (TE) projects must relate to surface transportation . This is a flexible provision that accommodates recreational use as long as the project relates to surface transportation. For bicycle projects, 23 U.S.C. Section 217(i) states: Transportation Purpose. No bicycle project may be carried out under this section unless the Secretary has determined that such bicycle project will be principally for transportation, rather than recreation purposes. This requirement only affects bicycle projects. It does not require a transportation purpose for pedestrian, equestrian, or any other use.

The Wright Brothers' historic flight of 1903 marked the dawn of new technologies that would allow us to navigate the oceans of air and build machines called automobiles to roll across continents. Thomas Edison harnessed electricity while Alexander Graham Bell gave us the telephone. Henry Ford and Ransom Olds manufactured thousands of autos to replace the horse and buggy while Glenn Curtiss carried forward where the Wrights left off. These men along with scores of others developed the stepping stones leading from the Old World to the one we live in today. In Maine, because of topography, location and bad roads, river steamers and coastal schooners, railroads and even the horse and buggy still were the prime movers for several more decades. Even today Maine retains a flavor different from its neighbors thanks to its maritime heritage.
