Honoring People Who Make Life Go
Recognizing special people across the transportation industry was at the core of the $3.6 million federal appropriation the Iowa Transportation Museum received through the efforts of Senator Chuck Grassley and the Iowa congressional delegation. To bring this concept to life, Public Communications Inc. of Chicago was retained and has spoken with leaders across the trucking, engineering, aviation, heavy equipment manufacturing and highway construction categories. From this research we have created the National Transportation Heroes Center – an online, interactive database that recognizes both “everyday” and “extraordinary” heroes, past and present.
Nominate Your Transportation Hero Now Over the next few months a call will go out for the nomination of our inaugural group of Transportation Heroes. Nominations will be solicited through the media and the Museum’s website and may come from families, employers, labor organizations, trade associations and anyone else interested in transportation. In particular, students will be encouraged to research potential nominees. At first the system will only recognize Iowans, but ultimately it will become national in scope.
A Selections Committee will review all nominations and the Transportation Heroes website will include interviews and stories about each hero. Related exhibits at the Iowa Transportation Museum will use these stories to tell the larger story of how transportation systems keep our country strong.

Photo: Mike Greenwood Introduction to the South Yorkshire Transport Museum Vehicles on Display How to find the Museum Hiring a Vintage Bus ... Early experiments with a diesel engine Introduction The Sheffield Bus Museum first opened in 1987. Up until the end of 2006 it was housed in part of the former Tinsley Tram Sheds. It has now moved to a new location in Aldwarke , near Rotherham. And it has a new name: the South Yorkshire Transport Museum How to find the Museum The new Museum, now renamed the South Yorkshire Transport Museum , is situated just off the A6123 on Waddington Way at Aldwarke. First Group's X78 service provides a frequent service from Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster to the Mushroom Roundabout. From there it's about a 20 minute walk to the Museum. For up to date travel information we recommend you telephone South Yorkshire PTE's "TRAVELINE" on Rotherham (01709) 515151, or visit the Traveline Yorkshire Journey Planner . (Make sure you have cookies enabled to use the Journey Planner, otherwise it refuses to play.)

http://freespace.virgin.net/neil.worthington/sheff/
formerly known as the New Website for New Museum! Yes, we have a new name and a broader remit covering all forms of transport in South Yorkshire. So we've finally got round to developing a new, improved website with a new domain name to match our new title. It's www.sytm.co.uk and it's now the Official Website of the South Yorkshire Transport Museum. This site, www.sheffieldbusmuseum.com, will continue to exist as a kind of virtual museum for the old Tinsley Tram Shed and as a signpost to the new Museum website. Want to Hire a Double Decker? Our Most Frequently Asked Question is undoubtedly: "Can we hire one of your buses for our wedding?" Yes you can, as we've now launched South Yorkshire Heritage Buses to provide private hire trips in old-fashioned front-engined double deckers. Event and Open Days for 2010 We're now well established at our new base in Aldwarke, just north of Rotherham. Our first Event Day this year is on Sunday 14th March. Following that there'll also be Event Days on the following Sundays in 2010: 4th April (Easter Day), 9th May, 13th June, 11th July, 8th August, 19th September, 10th October, 14th November and 12th December. Our Event Days are special occasions when the Museum is made ready for the 100+ visitors who normally come and an entry fee is charged. We open at 12 noon. The Museum also has Open Days every Saturday, from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There's nothing special happening on these days but there will be members working on the many different vehicles, and visitors find it interesting to see how much work goes into vehicle preservation. These Open Days are free of charge, though of course we are always glad of any donations to the Museum.
