TRUANCY PREVENTION THROUGH MEDIATION
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR SCHOOL YEAR
THE PROGRAM
THE EVALUATION METHOD
Due to the large number of schools participating in the Truancy Prevention Through Mediation Program for the 2001-2002 school year, a sampling strategy for collecting data was adopted. Each school completed the evaluation battery (Case Cover Sheet, Mediator Form, Mediation Summary, School Representative Survey #1 and #2, Parent/Legal Guardian Survey #1 and #2, and Student Survey #1 and #2 when appropriate) in three mediation sessions per month rather than in each session as had been done in previous years.
It is critical to note, the results presented here are for only a sample of the mediation cases conducted in a county during the school year. That is, in most instances, schools conducted more mediations than are represented here. Thus, it is possible there is something unique about the cases that ended up being selected for inclusion; however, this is not likely assuming a normal distribution of cases.
RESULTS
During the 2001-2002 school year, the Truancy Prevention through Mediation Program was utilized in eight counties and 90 elementary, middle, and high schools. In total, over 900 mediations were evaluated for this school year. In each of the counties, a significant reduction in the number of absences or tardies was demonstrated for those students/families that participated in the program. Furthermore, Truancy Prevention through Mediation Program participants had extremely positive outlooks regarding their satisfaction with the mediation, feeling validated during the mediation, and recognizing mediation as a viable tool for resolving similar issues in the future.

TRUANCY PREVENTION PROGRAM The Center of Grace Truancy Prevention Program will focus on schools located in the 4th Ward of the City of Paterson. As a result of a planning meeting held with School District Assistant Superintendent Dr. Joseph Fulmore and Mr. Hector Santos, School District Attendance Supervisor to discuss school attendance issues, it was agreed that student truancy was a critical issue within the school district.
Specifically, the Center of Grace Truancy Prevention Program will concentrate on the students attending Elementary School Number 6, 10 and 21. According to Mr. Santos these schools have a high rate of student truancy. The District also confirmed that a review of school attendance indicated that a student's attendance problems begin at the Kindergarten level. It was decided that Truancy Prevention Program will be structured to begin with Kindergarten students who were beginning to show signs of attendance problems.
After meeting with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General and New Jersey Office of Faith Based Initiative representatives to discuss the Center of Grace Truancy Prevention Program proposal and national model Truancy Prevention programs, Center of Grace proposes to present the following model programs to the Paterson School District for review and approval.

Letter from the Director Dear Subscribers,
Over the past few months, I've attended conferences and reviewed recent studies that address the high dropout rate in the United States, especially among Latino/Hispanic students. The statistics vary, but are consistently troubling and emphasize the consequences of school failure. This is the message in the report titled, High Cost of High School Dropouts: What the Nation Pays for Inadequate High Schools, by the Alliance for Excellence in Education.
After receiving large doses of information about school failure, I confess I felt cynical. I questioned if efforts to promote school success could truly reverse the alarming dropout rates that are rooted in issues of class, race, family functioning, and truancy. But just as my pessimism began to get the best of me, I received a commencement announcement in the mail. As I read the script text that spelled out the name of my nephew, Michael J. Lozano
