83. Michigan State Sanatorium
History of tuberculosis sanatorium in Michigan, accompanied by vintage postcard images.
http://www.livgenmi.com/sanatorium.htm
Michigan State Sanatorium a.k.a. Howell Tubercular Sanatorium At one time, the facility was a place to "take the cure" and from the notes on the back of these postcards that Sally Witt, the current development representative for the old Sanatorium site, found at an antiquarian book sale, it appears that this process took several months to a year. It also appears that people came from all over the United States to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings and the very capable care they received there. Below is a picture of the Administration Building taken right after its completion in about 1907 by Lyndon's Studio. Apparently these photos were made into post cards so that the patients could keep in touch with their friends and relatives sometimes hundreds of miles away. Opened on the 10th of September in 1907, the facility had an administration building and several "open-air" shacks out behind the building. If you look to the left behind the administration building in the picture above you can see the patient "shacks". These each accommodated ten to twelve persons. The men's facility was opened first and the women's opened in about 1908. Bed rest was the treatment required, usually twenty hours a day with the only exercise being the walk to the dining room. Treatment consisted of this total rest as no drugs were used and of course no surgery was ever considered. The men were allowed playing cards and the women handiwork of any kind but that was about the extent of it.

What is tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis (say: too-burr-cue-low-sis), also called TB, is an infection caused by a bacteria (germ). Tuberculosis usually affects the lungs, but it can spread to the joints, bladder, spine, brain and other parts of the body.
There are 2 types of TB:
  • TB infection: The bacteria is present but is not making you sick or contagious; you are not able to spread the disease. TB infection is also called latent TB or inactive TB. Active TB: The bacteria is present and is causing symptoms; you may be able to spread the disease.

Bovine TB vaccination will not be effective in badgers for next 12 years says BCVA
Caroline Stocks Friday 11 July 2008 14:00 A bovine TB vaccination will not be effective in badgers until at least 2020, the former president of the British Cattle Veterinary Association has warned. While a badger vaccine is expected to be developed by 2014, it would take more than five years before any effects would be seen, BCVA's Andy Biggs said. "Badgers infected with TB prior to vaccination will still be able to transmit the disease to cattle. So until 2020 it is unlikely we will see any positive effects from controlling the disease with a vaccine," he said. DEFRA secretary Hilary Benn announced on Monday (7 July) he would make £20m available to develop a TB vaccine over the next three years. This was in addition to the £18m which has already been invested over the last decade. Of the £20m announced for vaccine development, only half is new money While Mr Benn admitted it would be "some time" before an oral vaccine for badgers or a cattle vaccine became available, he said the investment would speed up the development.

President, Friends of Terra Cotta
Seaview Hospital-Farm Colony Historic District was designated an official New York City Landmark in 1985. Today, most of the building on this property remain vacant and many are in a severe state of deterioration Demolition by neglect is an unacceptable fate for New York's landmark buildings. The Friends of Terra Cotta is particularly concerned about the exacerbated condition of the ceramic murals and ornament which surround the tops of the Women's Ward Pavilions, buildings #1 - #4. These remarkable works were produced in Delft, Holland by De Porceleyne Fles Numerous tile experts have been interested in seeing these and they will be featured in an upcoming publication by Hans Van Lemmen. After a visit in late February 1998, during which some of these horrendous conditions were documented, it is clear that we must make the city take appropriate action.
Photos by David Jones Seaview Hospital is situated today on 400 acres surrounded by residential property, a golf course, park and high school.

Characteristic features
Tuberculous (TB) meningitis is correctly characterized as a meningoencephalitis, as it affects not only meninges but also brain parenchyma and vasculature. The primary pathologic event is formation of thick TB exudate within subarachnoid space, most prominently at the base of the brain. Accompanying this exudate is inflammation affecting adjacent blood vessels. Ischemic cerebral infarction, resulting from vascular occlusion, is a common sequela most often found in the distribution of the middle cerebral artery (reflecting presence of TB exudate within sylvian fissure) and striate arteries as they penetrate the base of the brain. Another characteristic feature of TB meningitis is hydrocephalus secondary to CSF dynamic disturbance.
