Tunisia - History
Until 1883, when Tunisia formally became a French protectorate, the country was a semi-independent monarchy, with the Bey of Tunis as Head of State.
In the 1930s a campaign for independence from French rule began, led by the Neo-Dustour
(New Constitution) Party, founded in 1934 by Habib Bourguiba and a section of active former members of the Dustour movement.
France granted Tunisia internal self-government in September 1955 and full independence on 20 March 1956. Five days later elections were held for a Constitutional Assembly, which met in April and appointed Bourguiba as Prime Minister in a Government dominated by members of the Neo-Dustour Party.
Disagreement over government policy regarding the Gulf crisis was the apparent cause of the replacement, in late August, of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Khelil, by Habib Boulares. In September the Government announced that it would comply with the resolutions of the UN Security Council concerning Iraq, including the imposition of a trade embargo.
Relations with the other countries of the Maghreb improved considerably in the 1980s. A meeting between President Bourguiba and President Chadli of Algeria in March 1983 led to the drafting of the Maghreb Fraternity and Co-operation Treaty, which envisaged the eventual creation of a Greater Maghreb Union, and was signed by Mauritania in December 1983.

Tunisia : History
In the earliest known time of its history, the region now called Tunisia was part of the Carthaginian Empire (see Carthage). According to tradition, Phoenician traders founded the city of Carthage in 814 bc at a location slightly northeast of the site of modern Tunis. In consequent centuries Carthage became the center of a mighty empire that controlled most of northern Africa and intermittently governed the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, Sardinia, and parts of Sicily. Beginning in 264 bc Carthage clashed with the expanding Roman Empire in a series of bloody fights known as the Punic Wars. In the last of these, the Third Punic War (149-146 bc), Rome defeated the Carthaginians and completely destroyed their capital. The region was overrun by Arab adherents of Islam in the 7th century. The Arab conquerors governed from the late 7th to the early 16th century. During that time they replaced the Roman-Christian culture with a Muslim way of life. During the Muslim era a succession of dynasties wielded power, notably the Aghlabites (800-909), the Fatimids (909-973), and the Zeirids (10th century). In the latter part of the 12th century the Normans, led by the Sicilian ruler Roger II, briefly occupied a number of valuable coastal points. The Arabs recovered the region later in the century, and the Arab Almohad (12th century) and Hafsite (1228-1574) dynasties succeeded to power. Beja Bizerte Gabes Gafsa ... Early History
The coast of Tunisia was settled in 10th cent. B.C. by Phoenicians. In the 6th cent. B.C. Carthage rose to power, but it was conquered by Rome (2d cent. B.C. ), and the region became one of the granaries of Rome. It was held by Vandals (5th cent. A.D. ) and Byzantines (6th cent.). In the 7th cent. it was conquered by Arabs, who founded Al Qayrawan . The region became known as Ifriqiya and the Berber population was converted to Islam. Successive Muslim dynasties ruled, interrupted by Berber rebellions. The reigns of the Aghlabids (9th cent.) and of the Zirids (from 972), Berber followers of the Fatimids, were especially prosperous. When the Zirids angered the Fatimids in Cairo (1050), the latter ravaged Tunisia. Barbary States ). The Hussein dynasty of beys, established in 1705, lasted until 1957.
European Influence and Nationalist Aspirations
In the 19th cent. the heavy debts that the beys had contracted gave European powers cause for intervention. France, Great Britain, and Italy took over Tunisia's finances in 1869. A number of incidents, including attacks by Tunisians on Algeria (a French possession since 1830), led to a French invasion of Tunisia. The bey was forced to sign the treaties of Bardo (1881) and Mersa (1883), which provided for the organization of a protectorate under a French resident general. The protectorate was opposed by Italy, which had economic interests and a sizable group of nationals in Tunisia. Italy's attitude grew increasingly belligerent, and, in the years immediately preceding World War I, threats of annexation were made.

Progress toward full democracy has been slow. Over the years President Bourguiba stood unopposed for re-election several times and was named "President for life" in 1974 by a constitutional amendment. At the time of independence, the Neo-Destourian Party (later the PSD)enjoying broad support because of its role at the forefront of the independence movementbecame the sole legal party when opposition parties were banned until 1981. Tunisia is a leader in the Arab world in promoting the legal and social status of women. A Personal Status Code was adopted shortly after independence in 1956 which, among other things, gave women full legal status (allowing them to run and own businesses, have bank accounts, and seek passports under their own authority) and outlawed polygamy. The government required parents to send girls to school, and today more than 50% of university students are women. Rights of women and children were further enhanced by 1993 reforms, which included a provision to allow Tunisian women to transmit citizenship even if they are married to a foreigner and living abroad. The government has supported a remarkably successful family planning program that has reduced the population growth rate to just over 1% per annum, contributing to Tunisia's economic and social stability.

Following independence from France in 1956, President Habib BOURGIUBA established a strict one-party state. He dominated the country for 31 years, repressing Islamic fundamentalism and establishing rights for women unmatched by any other Arab nation. In recent years, Tunisia has taken a moderate, non-aligned stance in its foreign relations. Domestically, it has sought to diffuse rising pressure for a more open political society.
