Images addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'dolfinmv'; Turkey Culture As Turkey successfully transformed from the religion-based former Ottoman Empire into a modern nation-state with a very strong separation of state and religion, an increase in the methods of artistic expression followed. During the first years of the republic, the government invested a large amount of resources into fine arts, such as museums, theatres, and architecture. Because of different historical factors playing an important role in defining the modern Turkish identity, Turkish culture is a product of efforts to be "modern" and Western, combined with the necessity felt to maintain traditional religious and historical values. Turkish music and literature form great examples of such a mix of cultural influences. Many schools of music are popular throughout Turkey, from "arabesque" to hip-hop genres, as a result of the interaction between the Ottoman Empire and the Islamic world along with Europe, and thus contributing to a blend of Central Asian Turkic, Islamic and European traditions in modern-day Turkish music. Turkish literature was heavily influenced by Persian and Arabic literature during most of the Ottoman era, though towards the end of the Ottoman Empire the effect of both Turkish folk and Western literary traditions became increasingly felt. The mix of cultural influences is dramatized, for example, in the form of the "new symbols [of] the clash and interlacing of cultures" enacted in the work of Orhan Pamuk, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Culture of Turkey
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search A painting by Nazmi Ziya Güran The culture of Turkey combines a largely diverse and heterogeneous set of elements that are derived from the Ottoman European Middle Eastern and Central Asian traditions. This rich diversity is mostly owed to Turkey 's former status as a multiethnic empire which, de facto until the loss of Libya to the Kingdom of Italy in 1912 (and de jure until the official loss of Egypt and Sudan to the British Empire in 1914, as a consequence of the Ottoman government's decision to join the First World War on the side of the Central Powers ) spanned three continents: Europe Asia and Africa . The present-day Republic of Turkey , which succeeded the Ottoman State in 1923, is still a transcontinental country that spans Europe and Asia. The nation was modernized primarily by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk starting from 1923. As he transformed a religion -driven former Ottoman Empire into a modern nation-state with a strong separation of state and religion , a corresponding increase in the methods of artistic expression arose. During the first years of the republic, the government invested a large amount of resources into fine arts such as paintings, sculpture and architecture. This was done as both a process of modernization and of creating a cultural identity. Because of the different historical factors defining the Turkish identity, the culture of Turkey combines clear efforts to be "modern" and Western , with a desire to maintain traditional religious and historical values.

    Culture of Turkey
The culture of Turkey takes its roots from Ottoman Empire. Ottoman literature and the court music of Turkey had a predominantly religious character and sounded overly pompous and sad for the western audience. Visual arts were constrained by the requirements of Islam that forbid to depict beings having an "immortal soul", which is why talented Muslims did not incline themselves towards this type of arts. Turkish museums are filled to the brim with various colored plates, elegant glass vases, wood carving decorated gates of mosques, sparkling colored Korans, intricate decorations and luxurious costumes. Ataturk turned the culture of Turkey upside down in an instant, giving way to the development of painting, sculpture, literature, western music (he loved opera), dances and drama. The introduction of the new, Latin based alphabet increased the literacy of the population and the Ottoman court prose allowed the use of the national language. Several Turkish writers, including Nazim Hikmet, Yasar Kemal and Orhan Pamuk became famous not only in Turkey, but all over the world. Such purely Ottoman art crafts such as paper finish that looked like marble and shadow doll theater became famous. While the passion for carpet braiding has not faded in Turkey until this day. Turkish folk music and Turkish films reflect culture of Turkey quite good.

Identification. , which can be used as an adjective or a proper noun. In Turkish, the name of the country is Location and Geography. Turkey has 4,454 miles of coastline. The interior consists of mountains, hills, valleys, and a high central plateau. The western coastal plains are generally more densely populated and industrial than are the central and eastern regions, except for Ankara on the central Anatolian plateau. Because Asia Minor had been home to Lydians, Hittites, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans over the centuries, it is dotted with historic monuments. Until recently, the rugged topography limited agriculture, and alternative land-based industries were virtually absent. Thus, many western Black Sea men sought work outside the region in the navy and merchant marine or in major cities, later returning home to retire. While the men worked away, the women kept up the home, farmed the land, and cared for the livestock. The central Anatolian plateau region is dotted with mountains and denuded of trees. It has a semi-arid climate with high temperatures in summer and low ones in winter. Villagers engage in animal husbandry and cultivate wheat, barley, and sugar beets. Areas unsuited for cultivation are used to graze large herds of sheep, cattle, and goats.

    Turkey's physical geography
Geographically, Turkey forms a natural bridge between the old world continents of Asia, Africa and Europe. The Anatolian peninsula is the westernmost point of Asia, divided from Europe by the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits. Thrace is the western part of Turkey on the European continent. Examination of Turkey's topographic structure on a physical map of the world shows clearly the country's high elevation in comparison to its neighbors, half of the land area being higher than 1000 meters and two thirds higher than 800 meters. Mountain ranges extend in an east-west direction parallel to the north and south coasts, and these are a principal factor in determining ecological conditions. This also means that apart from the Asi river in Anatolia Thracian Turkey, all Turkey's rivers have their sources within its borders and flow into the sea , into neighboring countries or into interior drainages. Turkey has seven river basins. The principal
