    Turkmenistan : Culture
Fundamental social institutions generally remained unchanged by the presence of Marxist dogma for over seventy years, although the presence of large numbers of Russians changed the distribution of the classes and the cultural loyalties of the intelligentsia. With some weakening in urban areas in the twentieth century, kinship and tribal affiliation retain a strong determine over the structure of Turkmen society. Increased national awareness is reflected in modifications of the school curriculum as well. Among new courses of instruction is a class on edep , or proper social behavior and moral conduct according to orthodox Turkmen and Islamic values. Officially sanctioned efforts also have been made to contact members of the Turkmen population living outside of Turkmenistan, and several international Turkmen organizations have been accomplished. Turkmenistan - Turkmenistan Culture, Customs and Traditions
Historically this was an area dominated by political forces scuffling across the territory. The armies of Alexander, the Roman, Persian and Arab empires and the hordes of Ghengis Khan all vied for control, while the wild nomadic horsemen pursued their tribal way of life. For centuries unknown and unmapped, Turkmenistan was finally incorporated into the Russian empire. Now the country enjoys independence and neutral status, fiercely proud of its culture and traditions. Turkmenistan Customs and Traditions Turkmenistan has a unique and remarkable history. Traditionally a nomadic people, Turkmen are descended from several separate tribes or clans, each speaking a different dialect and with its own style of dress. Turkmen are renowned for their lavish hospitality, respect for seniors, honesty and sincere generosity. To this day, a visitor will be offered tea and food before even being allowed to explain why he has come! Among the most important values for the Turkmen are friendship and love, always maintaining friendly relations with their neighbors - it is said that "If your neighbor is happy, you will be happy too."

Turkmenistan, officially Republic of Turkmenistan, republic in Central Asia, bordered on the north by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, on the east by Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, on the south by Afghanistan and Iran, and on the west by the Caspian Sea. It was formerly the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Turkmenistan is the southernmost of the former Soviet republics. Its land area totals 448,100 sq km (188,460 sq mi). Ashgabat is its capital and largest city. Turkmenistan has received little attention from the outside world. Apart from its role in establishing the Seljuk dynasty in the Middle East in the Middle Ages, for most of its history this territory was not a coherent nation but a geographically defined region of independent tribal groups and other political entities. Like other republics of the former Soviet Union, Turkmenistan has emerged on the world scene as a newly independent nation in need of both national and international acceptance, security, and development. When other constituent republics of the Soviet Union advanced claims to sovereignty in 1988 and 1989, Turkmenistan's leadership also began to criticize Moscow's economic and political policies as exploitative and detrimental to the well-being and pride of the Turkmen. By a unanimous vote of its Supreme Soviet, Turkmenistan declared its sovereignty in August 1990. After the August 1991 coup attempt against the Gorbachev regime in Moscow, Turkmenistan's communist leader Saparmyrat Niyazov called for a popular vote on freedom. The official result of the vote was 94 % in favor of freedom. The republic's Supreme Soviet had little choice other than to declare Turkmenistan's freedom from the Soviet Union and the establishment of the Republic of Turkmenistan on October 27, 1991.

Another common saying concerns horses, which Turkmen have bred and trained for millennia: "Water is a Turkmen's life, a horse is his wings, and a carpet is his soul." The Turkmen's horse is virtually part of the family and the beautiful Akhal-Teke breed is the national emblem.
      Turkmenistan Weddings
In a culture where the strength of the family has always been important, weddings and the birth of children hold the highest priority. While society is changing, the traditional customs and rituals of the matchmaking process and the wedding ceremony are still precisely observed. Besides the traditional visits and gifts between the two households, the date for the matchmaking meeting, the wedding and even the direction from which the bride arrives at the groom's home must be in accordance with the position of the stars and planets. As the bride approaches her future husband's home she must take the first step with the right foot - otherwise, it is said that there will be troubles, illness, and quarrels with the in-laws.

They never really formed a coherent nation or ethnic group until they were forged into one by Joseph Stalin in the 1930s. Rather they are divided into clans, and each clan has its own dialect and style of dress. Turkmens are famous for making gillams mistakenly called Bukhara rugs in the West. These are elaborate and colorful rugs, and these too help indicate the distinction between the various Turkmen clans. The most known source of that period is the national oguz epos "Oguz-nameh" also belonging to the cultural legacy of the Turkmen, Azerbaijanis and Turks. It was passed orally from generation to generation and was written down in the mid-16th century. Another epic monument is the poem "Kitabi Dede Korkud" which reflected pre-Islamic tribal culture of the oguzs and the influence of Islam in the 11th - 12th centuries. Epic poems were performed by national singers-storytellers. Along with the introduction of Islam Arabian writing spread in Central Asia. However Turkmen poetry used chagatai language (very similar to Persian) widely accepted in Central Asia. It was the chagatai language that was used by Turkmen literature. This language was also used by great Turkmen poets of the 18th century.

    Turkmenistan Culture Shock
As I have explained previously, part of the spirit of an overland trip is seeing the connections between placesmeeting Kurds in Syria and Iran, seeing how falafel changes from Syria to Jordan, making out modern differences among the various Gulf states. Equally educational, however, and quite shocking, was the complete change in atmosphere from Iran to Turkmenistan. In some ways, I thought that there might be some similaritiesthere are after all Turkmen in Iran, not to mention all the Azeri Turks (the largest second largest ethnic group, at around a quarter of the total population), both governments are infamous for being somewhat oppressive, or at least not beacons of freedom, and parts of the territory of modern Turkmenistan have often been part of same state or empire as now Iran through the years, giving the two countries a shared history.
All of the changes once we crossed the border were shocking. Gone of course were the chadors and veils and all the social/gender regulations of the Islamic Republic. That much could have been predicted, although the sight of women with free-flowing hair felt surprisingly novel. Also gone was the (albeit stressed) urban culture of Iran, with shaded streets and water flowing down the guttersreplaced with empty Soviet avenues and post-Soviet monuments to Niyazov, the former president also known as Turkmenbashi.

CULTURE This energy-rich Central Asian country, once a patchwork of nomadic tribes, is reviving its most ancient rituals and customs and rediscovering old taboos that were thinly papered over during Communist rule. Many marriages are arranged, but marriages-of-love are becoming more popular. Muslims in Turkmenistan are of the Sunni faith, and do not share the Islamic fundamentalism of their neighbors in Afghanistan and Iran. But tribal loyalty can weigh more heavily than religious feeling. There are five major tribes and more than a dozen smaller tribes and clans that spread across the deserts of Turkmenistan. Young women with two braids and a small scarf are unmarried; those with one braid and a big kerchief have been wed. More than 70 diffrent nationalities reside in Turkmenistan. Two giant earthquakes (10 points on the Richter scale) in 1895 and 1924 flattened Krasnovodsk and Ashgabat respectively. A 1948 quake destroyed Ashgabat in less than a minute

You can stroll around the magnificent city-sites of Ancient Merv and Nissa , breathe history in the ancient capital of Khorezm, Kunya-Urgench , or join the archaeologists and witness history in the writing in Zoroastrian Margush . Come and visit the Sufi philosopher's shrines of Meane Baba or Abu-Fazid in their simplicity and ancient beauty and travel the times amidst the ruins of medieval Dekhistan in the western plains of the country.

Turkmenistan Culture and Language The Turkmen people have traditionally been nomads and horsemen, and even today after the fall of the USSR attempts to urbanize but the Turkmens have not been very successful. They never really formed a coherent nation or ethnic group until they were forged into one by Joseph Stalin in the 1930s. Rather they are divided into clans, and each clan has its own dialect and style of dress. Turkmens are famous for making gillams, mistakenly called Bukhara rugs in the West. These are elaborate and colorful rugs, and these too help indicate the distinction between the various Turkmen clans. The Turkmens are Sunni Muslims but they, like most of the region's nomads, adhere to Islam rather loosely and combine Islam with pre-Islamic animist spirituality. The Turkmens do indeed tend to be spiritual but are by no means militantly religious. A Turkmen can be identified anywhere by the traditional "telpek" hats, which are large black sheepskin hats that resemble afros. The national dress: men wear high, shaggy sheepskin hats and red robes over white shirts. Women wear long sack-dresses over narrow trousers (the pants are trimmed with a band of embroidery at the ankle). Female headdresses usually consist of silver jewellery. Bracelets and brooches are set with semi-precious stones... In language, Turkmens speak Turkmen, related most closely to Turkish and Azerbaijani. Virtually everyone, however, even in the remote desert regions, speaks Russian.
