To express extra deference, the hand-shaker may lightly grip his hand-shaking forearm with the opposite hand. Many times men will hold hands with other men, and often the handshake is prolonged into this hand-holding. This does not have any implication on their sexual preferences; it's just a sign of friendship and closeness. Uganda : Culture
Uganda's rift valley foundation provides the nation with an alluvial plateau and plentiful lakes and rivers. Mountain peaks mark geological fault lines along its eastern and western boundaries and offer cooler temperatures and ample rainfall. This environment was peopled by successive waves of immigrants, some of whom displaced indigenous hunting societies during the first millennium A.D. Most of the newcomers eventually settled in the region that would become southern Uganda, and their evolving political and cultural variety contributed to conflicts that flared up over several centuries. These enmities still simmered in the twentieth century, but none of them seriously derailed the modernization process that was occurring in Uganda as it approached freedom in 1962. One of the challenges facing the National Resistance Movement government was balancing orthodox forces against pressures for modernization brought to bear by Uganda's growing educated elite. Women, too, have often been a force for modernization, as they demanded educational and economic opportunities denied under orthodox and colonial rulers. The focus of these pressures in the 1980s was Uganda's still strong educational system. Through education, people fightd to bolster the institutions that underlay civil society in an environment that bore scars from government neglect and abuse. Apac Arua Bundibugyo Bushenyi ... News: Airport Peep Show Scanners I think this whole incident can lead to some interesting situations. I think the more people balk at the s-xual assaults that the government is doing in the name of security things are just going to get worse. I do not see any publication or notice to passengers in any airport telling them that they are giving up many of their constitutional rights just because they wish to fly to a destination instead of driving to that destination. I wonder what would happen if people stopped flying because of the TSA overstepping their bounds. [See Similar Topics]

Kampala - Culture Kampala is one of the few African capitals that was not founded by the colonialists. On one of the hills that characterize the city of today, the kings of the Baganda-people had long established their court. Captain Lugard, the representative of the British colonial company I.B.E.A., had his fort built on the opposite hill, and the various missionaries established themselves on other hilltops. With the development of cash-crop agriculture as from the beginning of the century, Kampala became the trading centre for the continuously larger harvests of coffee, tea and cotton, and in 1931, when the famous Uganda-Railway finally reached Kampala, it was on track to displace Nairobi as the metropolis of East Africa. The civil wars of the Seventies and early Eighties however had a devastating effect on the city. The bombed-out high-rise building of the city centre could only be rebuilt after 1986, but since then the city has been growing at an incredible pace and today vibrates with optimism and energy. Kampala, the capital city of Uganda is spread over ten hills and derives its name from a kiganda expression "kasozi k'empala, "the hill of antelopes" Kampala is located on the Northern shores of Lake Victoria at an altitude of 1,310 meters above sea level. The climate of Kampala is typical of an inland tropical city, modified by altitude, and distance from the sea. The mean temperature of the city is 22 o C, with a mean maximum of 27

Lake Kyoga forms the northern boundary for the Bantu speaking peoples, who dominate much of East, Central and Southern Africa with the Baganda taking the biggest percentage. Most of the Bantu speaking people formed their own kingdoms; Buganda, Busoga, Bunyoro, Ankole and Tooro. Before the coming of the British these kingdoms were organized political settings with Buganda having the most civilized and highly centralized monarchy. In the north live the Lango (near Lake Kyoga) and the Acholi (towards the Sudanese border) who speak Nilotic languages. To the east are the Iteso and Karamajong who are related to the Masai pastoralists of Kenya. In the forests of the west live the Batwa, a pygmy related tribe thought to originate from Congo.
