    Brief Ukraine History
The Ukraine history possesses two unique features.
    • Kievan Rus' is the predecessor of the three major nationalities - modern Belarusians, Russians, and Ukrainians.
    • History of the Kievan Rus and Russia was written by the foreigners. German historians were invited to Russia in 18th century in order to write its history. They created their own theory of Russia's origination, which didnt reflect real historical facts.
Both of these features became the source of numerous debates around Ukrainian history. We still can hear arguing over the heritage of Kievan Rus. Were still not sure whether to consider some historical persons as traitors or the greatest Ukrainian patriots of all time. One can discuss. One can argue. But our past cant be changed. Ukrainian history has things to be proud of. We look forward to the happy future of the independent Ukraine.

Kyiv Rus was a cradle of three modern Slavic peoples - Ukrainian, Russian and Byelorussian. A Christian missionary, Cyril, converted the Kyivan nobility and most of the population in 988. Conflict among the feudal lords led to decline in the 12th century. Kyiv was razed by Mongol raiders in the 12th century and the whole Kyiv Rus was invaded by Tatar-Mongols who inflicted extensive damage. The western Ukrainian principality of Galicia, founded in the 12th century, suffered less from the Mongol invasion than the rest of the area, and was annexed by Poland in the 14th century. At about the same time Kyiv and the Ukrainian of Volhynia were conquered by Lithuania and later came, with the latter country, into the possession of Poland.

Conflict among the feudal lords led to decline in the 12th century. Mongol raiders razed Kyiv in the 13th century. Most of the territory of what is modern Ukraine was annexed by Poland and Lithuania in the 14th century, but during that time, Ukrainians began to conceive of themselves as a distinct people, a feeling that survived subsequent partitioning by greater powers over the next centuries. Ukrainian peasants who fled the Polish effort to force them into servitude came to be known as Cossacks and earned a reputation for their fierce martial spirit and love of freedom. In 1667, Ukraine was partitioned between Poland and Russia. In 1793, when Poland was partitioned, much of modern-day Ukraine was integrated into the Russian Empire.

It is the story of a group of people who lived through many hard times. These peoplethe Ukrainiansmanaged to hold on to their national identity through even the worst points in Ukrainian history. Not even the forced starvation of millions of their people split Ukrainians apart. The history of humans in the land of modern-day Ukraine begins thousands of years ago, when nomads from across Europe and Asia settled there. Among these nomadic groups were the Scythians, Sarmatians, Cimmerians, Goths, and traders from Greece. The Greeks understood the importance of Ukraine because of its location. Ukraine is located in the middle of ancient trade routes between Europe and Asia. The unification of the people in Ukraine began with the arrival of the Slavs.

    Origins and History
In the 19th century, the area inhabited by Ruthenians, as the Ukrainians were then known, was divided between Russia and the Austrian Empire. Austria got Galicia after the partition of Poland in 1772. Territory was later added, including the Duchy of Bukovina. From 1815, the former Polish possessions of Austria were known as the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. Ukrainians were a majority only in the eastern parts of this kingdom. As a kingdom, Galicia had three flags. The origins of Ukraine's flag can be traced back to the convention of the Supreme Ruthenian Council, meeting in Lviv in October 1848. At this meeting, an emblem (coat of arms) for the Ukrainians was adopted. This was a golden rampant lion on blue [Encyclopedia Ukraine, Flag Bulletin, 1992

    Ukraine : History
After the Nazi and Soviet invasions of Poland in 1939, the western Ukrainian regions were incorporated into the Soviet Union. Armed resistance against Soviet authority continued as late as the 1950s. During times of relative liberalization-as under Nikita Khrushchev from 1955 to 1964 and during the time of perestroika under Mikhail Gorbachev-Ukrainian communists pursued nationalist objectives. The 1986 explosion at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, located in the Ukrainian SSR, and the Soviet governments initial efforts to conceal the extent of the catastrophe from its own people and the world, was a watershed for many Ukrainians in exposing the severe problems of the Soviet system. Ukraine became an independent state on August 24, 1991, and was a co-founder of the Commonwealth of Independent States following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, although it has not officially joined the organization. Richly endowed in natural resources, Ukraine has been fought over and subjugated for centuries; its 20th-century struggle for liberty is not yet complete. A short-lived independence from Russia (1917-1920) was followed by brutal Soviet rule that engineered two artificial famines (1921-22 and 1932-33) in which over 8 million died, and World War II, in which German and Soviet armies were responsible for some 7 million more deaths. Although independence was attained in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR, true freedom remains elusive as many of the former Soviet elite remain entrenched, stalling efforts at economic reform, privatization, and civic liberties. State symbols of Ukraine Early History In ancient times a major part of present-day Ukraine was inhabited by the Scythians , who were later displaced by the Sarmatians . Early in the Christian era, a series of invaders (Goths, Huns, Avars) overran the Ukrainian steppes, and in the 7th cent. the Khazars included much of Ukraine in their empire. The Ukrainians themselves can be traced to Neolithic agricultural tribes in the Dnieper and Dniester valleys. Kievan Rus Following Yaroslav's In the mid-14th cent. Lithuania began to expand eastward and southward, supplanting the Tatars in Ukraine. The dynastic union between Poland and Lithuania in 1386 also opened Ukraine to Polish expansion. Ukraine had flourished under Lithuanian rule, and its language became that of the state; but after the organic union of Poland and Lithuania in 1569, Ukraine came under Polish rule, enserfment of the Ukrainian peasants proceeded apace, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church suffered persecution. In 1596 the Ukrainian Orthodox bishops, confronted with the power of Polish Catholicism, established the Uniate, or Greek Catholic, faith, which recognized papal authority but retained the Orthodox rite. Meanwhile, the Black Sea shore, ruled by the khans of Crimea, was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire in 1478.

Short history of Ukraine Ukraine Galicia Ukraine under direct imperial russian rule World War 1 and the struggle for independence Soviet Ukraine ... Ukraine on the path to independence Ukraine Galicia Under Austria, ethnically Ukrainian Galicia was joined administratively with purely Polish areas to its west into a single province, with Lviv (German: Lemberg) as the provincial capital. This and the fact that, in the province's Ukrainian half, the Poles constituted overwhelmingly the landlord class and dominated the major cities (though many towns were largely Jewish) made Polish-Ukrainian rivalry a crucial feature of Galician life. Although, on balance, Habsburg policies favoured the Poles, Ukrainians (Ruthenians in the contemporary terminology) in Austria enjoyed far greater opportunities for their national development and made far greater progress than did Ukrainians in tsarist Russia. The fortunes of the Uniate church also rose. Renamed the Greek Catholic church in 1774, it was, by imperial decree, equalized in status with the Roman Catholic church, and in 1807 a metropolitanate was established, with its seat in Lviv. Imperial authorities took pains to raise the educational standards of the clergy. In the early decades of the 19th century, the clergy trained at newly established institutions almost exclusively formed the educated class, and their children, beginning to enter secular professions, gave rise to a Ukrainian intelligentsia. In the course of the 19th century, the Greek Catholic church became a major national, as well as religious, institution.
