Unitarianism is a doctrine of God which asserts that the singleness and simplicity of God are contradicted by the doctrine of the Trinity , and therefore rejects the doctrine of the Trinity. Many Christians hold that a denial of the trinity and a subsequent lack of belief in the godhead of Jesus Christ is not a position tenable for Christians, and that a baptism is not valid unless the trinitarian formula is used in its administration. Some Christians therefore regard Unitarianism as a non-Christian religion.

Their pamphlets state that they hope "to forge reasonable beliefs for ourselves without turning religion into no more than an intellectual exercise; to respect all persons while feeling free to disagree openly with points of view expressed." In 1961 the Unitarians merged with the Universalist Church of America to form the Unitarian Universalist Association of North America. They are affiliated with the Unitarian General Assembly in London, and the International Association of Religious Freedom worldwide. A RELIGION OF DENIAL THE MERGER AND RESULTING CHANGES The Universalist Church believes in Universal salvation, that is, that all will attain to heavenly glory regardless of beliefs. The Unitarians did not necessarily believe in any kind of an afterlife. A compromise hammered out during the merger eliminated the name of Jesus from the association's statement of principles, according to Time Magazine of June 27th, 1983. This article also reported that a proposal was put forth that..."reference to God be replaced with a statement that the churches "reflect various forms of Theism, Christianity, Humanism, Feminism and other religious traditions"." The article concluded with these words "Over the past seven years the U.U.A. has experienced a decline of nearly 31% (to 136,500), the most severe membership loss ever suffered by any church body in North America."

From The Book of THoTH (Leaves of Wisdom)
Historic Unitarianism believed in the oneness of God as opposed to traditional Christian belief in the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Historic Unitarians believed in the moral authority, but not the deity , of Jesus . Unitarians are characterized by some as being identified through history as free thinkers and dissenters, evolving their beliefs in the direction of rationalism and humanism. Throughout the world, many Unitarian congregations and associations belong to the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists. In the United States many Unitarians are Unitarian Universalist or UU, reflecting an institutional consolidation between Unitarianism and Universalism. Today, most Unitarian Universalists do not consider themselves Christians, even if they share some beliefs quite similar to those of mainstream Christians. There is a small percentage of UUs who maintain a Christian centric belief system, see Unitarian Christians.

What is Unitarianism?
by Matt Slick Unitarianism is the belief that God exists in one person, not three. It is a denial of the doctrine of the Trinity as well as the full divinity of Jesus. Therefore, it is not Christian. There are several groups that fall under this umbrella: Jehovah's Witnesses, Christadelphianism, The Way International, etc. Another term for this type of belief is called monarchianism. In the context of universalism, the Unitarianism discussed here is that belief that denies the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the personhood of the Holy Spirit, eternal punishment, and the vicarious atonement of Jesus. Unitarian universalists use many biblical concepts and terms but with non-biblical meanings. Unitarianism is not Christian. There is a group known as the Unitarian Universalist Association. This denomination which was formed in 1961 in the United States when the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America merged. Its membership is around 175,000. The General Convention of the Unitarian Universalists formulated the five principles of the Universalist Faith in 1899.

Forms of Unitarianism
There are three distinct schools of Unitarian thought:
  • 'Biblical Unitarianism' - God is one being Who consists of one person - the Father. The Messiah is the Son of God, but not God Himself, nor even a pre-existent being. Jesus Christ is the Son of God; a mortal man (who did not exist before his conception and subsequent birth), conceived by the Holy Spirit, who later received immortality and divine nature. Even now he is still not God, but rather an exalted man. Biblical Unitarians are distinguished from Rationalist Unitarians by their strict adherence to Sola Scriptura and their belief that Scripture is both inspired and inerrant.

Unitarianism as a system of Christian thought and religious observance has its basis, as opposed to that of orthodox Trinitarianism, in the unipersonality of the Godhead, i.e. in the idea that the Godhead exists in the person of the Father alone. Unitarians trace their history back to the Apostolic age, claim for their doctrine a prevalence during the ante- Nicene period, and by help of Arian communities and individual thinkers trace a continuity of their views to the present time. Whatever the accuracy of this lineage, the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century saw in many European countries an outbreak more or less serious of anti-Trinitarian opinion. Suppressed as a rule in individual cases, this type of doctrine ultimately became the badge of separate religious communities, in Poland (extinct), in Hungary, and at a much later date in England.

American Unitarian Conference
Promoting the American Unitarian Tradition We believe that the love of God is not only essential to happiness, but to the strength and perfection of all the virtues; that conscience, without the sanction of God's authority and retributive justice, would be a weak director; that benevolence, unless nourished by communion with his goodness, and encouraged by his smile, could not thrive amidst the selfishness and thanklessness of the world; and that self-government, without a sense of the divine inspection, would hardly extend beyond an outward and partial purity. William Ellery Channing Our Religious Principles 1. God's presence is made known in a myriad of ways. Religion should promote a free and responsible search for truth, meaning, communion and love. 2. Reason is a gift from God. Religion should embrace reason and its progeny, including the scientific enterprise which explores God's creation. 3. Free will is a gift from God. Religion should assist in the effort to find a path that exercises that gift in a responsible, constructive and ethical manner.

    Welcome to Unitarian Universalism!
Unitarian Universalism is a caring, open-minded religion that encourages seekers to follow their own spiritual paths. Our faith draws on many religious sources, welcoming people with different beliefs. We are united by shared values, not by creed or dogma. Our congregations are places where we gather to nurture our spirits and put our faith into action by working toward social justice in our communities and the wider world. There is no formal conversion process, so becoming a Unitarian Universalist (UU) is simply a matter of self-identification. Newcomers are always welcome at UU churches. Membership in local congregations is voluntary and does not require renouncing other religious affiliations or practices. We invite you to explore our website

UUTRM Pamphlet
When people or forces of nature bring violence into our lives, as happened on September 11, 2001, or at the 1999 shootings at the Columbine High School or during Hurricane Isabel, individuals and communities may feel isolated and fearful. There are well-established methods of responding to trauma that provide good coping skills and prevent later emotional difficulties. One such method is found in the availability of compassionate individuals to accompany those traumatized as they are threatened by a loss of hope and meaning. The Unitarian Universalist Trauma Response Ministry (UUTRM) provides multi-faith and culturally sensitive spiritual care to survivors of mass disasters and other significant trauma.

When John was the minister of the First Universalist Church in Rochester, New York, I was on the Church School Committee. In the autumn of 1972, there was a need to have some activity for the Sunday School children during the time between Sunday School and the time parents took them home. Both the children and the parents came to the "Coffee Hour," but the children needed something to do while waiting for the parents to take them home. This was very important! I suggested that we have a stamp club for the children, which, hopefully would siphon off most of the children, thereby reduce most of the destructive behavior that had taken place. Well, as so often happens, it was my suggestion and I became the leader of the Junior Stamp Club. This activity, held in a quiet room, was very quieting and instructive. The scheme worked well, considering their former behavior. I offered them U.S. and foreign stamps; the children could look through boxes of stamps to choose which ones they wanted to put into their collection.

http://sruu.iecc.com/
Welcome to soc.religion.unitarian-univ
Soc.religion.unitarian-univ is the usenet group dedicated to Unitarian-Universalists. Since its inception in August 1994, topics of discussion have ranged from the inspirational to the silly to the practical and back again. (This is pretty typical of U-U discourse.) The group (sruu to its friends) is robomoderated , a technique that passes all submissions through a validation program before sending them out to the world, to enforce as necessary the rules that the group runs under. A board of five volunteer moderators help maintain the group and encourage a level of respect and civility appropriate to a church-related group. There's more detail on the moderation policy in the FAQ
How do I subscribe to sruu and post messages?
Before posting anything, please read the group for a little while so you understand the tone and topics of the group, and read the FAQ If you don't get the confirmation message, most likely either your news program isn't mailing messages correctly, or the From: line in your message is set wrong and doesn't have your correct mail address. The easiest solution to both is usually to mail messages yourself rather than using the posting feature of your news program.
