edit Management goals and objectives
Management goals should be based on an understanding of public attitudes, perceptions, and knowledge, a review of the agents in change, and the expressed needs and concerns of the community. These goals should be compared to a dynamic or temporal description of the resource based from inventory and management objectives (Mudrack 1980).

Urban forests improve air quality, absorb rainwater, improve biodiversity and potentially allow recycling to 20% of waste which is wood-based

What is an Urban Forest?
Urban forests are made up of public and private forests, prairies, wetlands and other ecological communities that provide environmental services to the urban and/or suburban community of Fayetteville. Urban Forestry is the management of trees and other vegetation on public and private land. Community trees make up the urban forest and can be found along streets, in parks, on public property, and on private property. Landscaping required of new developments also is a community assets and can be found in the same places. It is the combination of these trees and landscapes which create the urban forest. As a community, we receive multiple benefits from trees and plantings within the the urban forest. This urban forest provides benefits that are fundamental to our city's livability and vitality, such as clean air and water, cooler streets and homes, enhanced retail sales, beauty, and wildlife habitat. These elements are essential to the prosperity, health and comfort of any city.

Urban Forestry Resources Urban Forestry An urban forest consists of all the trees in an urban setting, whether planted along a street, in a park, or in a backyard. Trees are often planted in urban environments to provide beauty and soften the harsh surfaces and angles of the city. But trees provide so much more than aesthetics. Trees affect the environment by providing shade, softening the wind, and cleaning the air. We use trees to screen poor views, provide privacy, and reduce noise. Trees also provide habitat for wildlife. And trees increase property values. Key to a thriving urban forest are proper tree selection and maintenance. Tree Selection: Start by considering the site where the tree will be planted. Taking the time to carefully consider the constraints of the planting location and the type of tree that is appropriate for the space will result in a healthy tree that provides many benefits with minimal maintenance. The wrong tree planted in the wrong location can cause damage to sidewalks, become tangled in power lines, and crack sewer pipes. The result will be removal of the tree or substantial maintenance to constrain the growth of the tree that will destroy its natural shape, beauty and health. Information at the following links will assist you in proper tree selection and planting:

Understanding the Value of Trees within Our Communities
More and more communities are beginning to recognize the tangible benefits that trees provide in the urban environment. Healthy trees reduce air and noise pollution, provide energy-saving shade and cooling, furnish habitat for wildlife, enhance aesthetics and property values, and are an important contributor to community image, pride, and quality of life. Furthermore, many communities have realized that in order to protect and enhance their valuable tree resources, it is useful to view and manage their trees as a cohesive unit, the community or urban forest. Tree ordinances are among the tools used by communities striving to attain a healthy, vigorous, and well-managed community forest. By themselves, however, tree ordinances cannot assure that the trees in and around our communities will be improved or even maintained. Tree ordinances simply provide the authorization and standards for management activities. If these activities are not integrated into an overall management strategy, problems are likely to arise. Without an overall strategy, management will be haphazard, inefficient, and ineffective, and the community forest will suffer.
        Types of Tree Ordinances
Tree ordinances fit into one of three basic categories.

    Reuniting Man and Nature:
The Need for Natural Landscapes in Urban Areas
The time will come when New York will be built up, when all the grading and filling will be done, and when the picturesquely-varied, rocky formation of the Island will have been converted into the foundations for rows of monotonous straight streets, and piles of erect, angular buildings. There will be no suggestion left of its present varied surface, with the single exception of the few acres contained in the Park. Then the priceless value of the present picturesque outlines of the ground will be more distinctly perceived, and its adaptability for its purpose more fully recognized. It therefore seems desirable to interfere with its easy, undulating outlines, and picturesque, rocky serenity as little as possible, and, on the other hand, to endeavor rapidly, and by every legitimate means, to increase and judiciously develop these particularly individual and characteristic sources of landscape effects.
    - From a letter dated May 31st, 1858, written by Frederick Law Olmstead, Architect-in-Chief of New York City's Central Park, to the Board of Commissioners of The Central Park. [1] This paper examines the presence of natural landscapes within cities. These landscapes will be addressed through two themes: urban waterfronts and urban parks. Waterfronts and parks play many key roles in the workings of a city. These roles show the importance of natural landscapes in maintaining urban vitality. Roots of the current problems facing cities are first examined. The roles of specific urban waterfronts and parks are then reviewed with respect to some general research. It is my thesis that the presence of natural landscapes is helpful for urban development and redevelopment.
