Uruguay Culture
The Uruguayan people celebrate the art of theater and a number of musical and dance traditions whenever possible, like cultural festivals, art, plays, concerts and exhibitions. Though most of these traditions are essentially European by birth, they have been modified with dashes of local flavor. The tango particularly, has a sub-culture of its own, which revolves around music, lyrics and movement. The tango is all about love, hate and passion, and it makes the dancer feel pure joy. Uruguayans love to tango and they do it exceptionally well. The country also has the culture of the gaucho or the cowboys of South America. These gauchos have their own traditional wear, music and dance, and is symbolizes pride, individual integrity and national identity. Uruguayans also create beautiful handcrafted leather goods like belts, hats, purses and boots. They are also known for their handmade woolen sweaters and ceramic crafts. More Articles :

She doesn't die right away. Her life just fades away slowly. After this woman, Alicia, dies, her servant finds something very odd and scary under her pillow. It is an ugly animal with hairy legs. This animal had been sucking Alicia's blood while she slept. An Uruguayan wrote this short story, called "The Feather Pillow." His name was Horacio Quiroga. And the only thing stranger than that story is the real story of Quiroga's life. Quiroga had many hard times throughout his life.

Dutch conductor Harke de Roos believes orchestras have been playing Beethoven's symphonies at the wrong speed for 200 years. He says the metronome instructions are misleading, and to show what he means, he's just conducted Symphony No.2 in what he believes are the original tempi.

Uruguay's culture: some main aspects
There are several main aspects which could be seen as having an important influence in Uruguay's culture. In order to learn and have a clear approach of how a country's culture is, it is very important to consider a variety of factors, such as its past and main historic events, its geography, its art expression forms, and its traditions among many others. Although a country's culture could never be accurately described through a few lines and maybe not even described with words at all; we will try to give an approach to the main aspects of Uruguay's culture within the next lines.>
Uruguay's culture: the influence of its past
Several major events in the history of Uruguay have had a very important influence in this country's culture and the identity of its population. Uruguay culture was built through centuries of historical facts and events such as being invaded by foreign forces and fighting for the land back, receiving important amounts of European immigrants, going through a very severe dictatorship, recovering the democracy state, and suffering very a hard economical crisis, among others, have had a major role in molding the country's culture and the personality of its people.

Uruguay's aboriginal inhabitants were the Charrúa Indians, a hunter-gatherer people who cared little for outsiders. They killed the explorer Juan Diaz de Solís and most of his party when the Spaniards encountered them in 1516.In 1680, the Portuguese founded Colonia on the estuary of the Río de la Plata as a rival to Spanish-held Buenos Aires on the opposite shore. Spain responded by building its own citadel at Montevideo. In 1680, the Portuguese set up Colonia on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, an estuary that makes up some of the border between Uruguay and Argentina. The Portuguese did this to counter the Spanish settlement just across the estuary at Buenos Aires. So the Spanish countered by building a settlement at Montevideo, on the same side of the estuary as Colonia. Uruguayan hero José Artigas fought against the Spanish but was unable to prevent a Brazilian takeover of the "Banda Oriental" (the original name of the eastern shore of the Río de la Plata). Exiled to Paraguay, he inspired the "33 Orientales" who, with Argentine support, liberated the territory in 1825 and established Uruguay as an independent State. Uruguay's independence was repeatedly threatened during the 19th century, militarily by Argentina and Brazil, and economically by Britain. Federalist forces in collusion with Argentina besieged Montevideo from 1838-51 and helped create two warring political parties, the Blancos and the Colorados. Around the same time, the British introduced new wool, meat and rail industries. They also replaced the rangy criollo stock with their own cattle, thus commercializing one of the country's few abundant resources. For the remainder of the century, the contest between the Blancos and Colorados continued, immersing the country in civil war, dictatorship and political intrigue.

I took Pictures of Uruguay Culture that I thought would give you the reader a true feeling of how the culture in this part of the world is.
I found it so different from what I experience in the Cariboo Region of British Columbia Canada.
Uruguay culture uses wood alot. No, seriously...I mean alot! There are houses, or shops like the one above all over the place. Its a very common sight to see in Uruguay.
Some of these places look to me as if you couldnt fit another piece of wood on the lot.
Heres what I found interesting about this picture of Uruguay. This wood is used primarily for cooking.
Its true! in every..ok almost every restaurant you go has one of these barbeque pits that they grill your Uruguay food on. Most commonly its steak, chicken or sausage.
Scroll down the page and you'll see a picture of me taking my steak off of one of these restaurant barbeques
I really liked this idea of the above Uruguay picture. I think if you want a feel for the culture of Uruguay then this picture gives some humerous insite.
I felt it only fair that I add it to my Uruguay Culture Pictures page. Here is a perfect example of a difference in our culture. I found this idea so simple and practical. No need for big plastic or metal trash cans, jst a simple pole and basket to hold the garbage bags in.
