US stock exchanges agree to centralize insider trading regulation
  • United States Migalhas
The US Securities and Exchange Commission ( SEC ) announced on Wednesday that it has reached a tentative agreement with ten US stock exchanges to centralize insider trading controls among the institutions. Under the plan, the programs to prevent and detect insider trading will be centrally controlled by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority ( FINRA ) and a section of the New York Stock Exchange ( NYSE ), instead of having each exchange run its own program. Under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the markets are required to institute self-regulating controls, and the SEC has said the plan should make those controls more effective.

Canadian Stocks - Canadian Stock on U.S exchanges
Expert: Steven Taylor
Question Dear Steven, First I must say that I found your response to the posted question about Canadian stocks on the US exchanges very useful. I am working on a project for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accounts (CICA) and am trying to gather any information possible on the number of Canadian companies listed on U.S stock exchanges and trends thereof. Broadly, it seems like that number is getting smaller. 1) Can you suggest any source where I can get information confirming whether Canadian companies are indeed delisting from the US stock exchanges? (I am trying to assess whether the SEC's standards and requirements is a factor influencing Canadian companies to delist) I've searched based on your response to a prior question and managed to get a list for NASDAQ and NYSE.

Bearing in mind that most of these tables don't cover equities trading below $2.00, a very large chunk of the "top gainers" are stock warrants, NOT common stock. Unfortunately, the "top percentage loser" tables are also peppered with stock warrants. How can an investor profit from the superior leverage offered by stock warrants? Stockwarrants.com is the internet's only coverage/analysis service for American warrants. In fact, you won't find better overall coverage of the stock warrant universe in any media. While we refuse to seduce subscribers with unrealistic performance predictions, a quick glimpse at our model portfolio should provide ample evidence that a disciplined approach to warrant investing can produce returns that considerably exceed those of common stock.

Death of US GAAP for foreign companies listed in US stock exchanges
Posted by amit khandelia in June 22nd There had been talks going round since last couple of months to recognize IFRS for all the foreign companies listed in US Stock Exchanges. As speculated the good news is that all foreign companies listed in United States are no more required to follow US GAAP. The companies are now given the option to file the English version of IFRS sets of books of accounts as the US lawyers and accountants are better versed in English. The option of complying with US GAAP is open and if the companies still want to follow it they can do so. The proposal is unanimously voted by the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) which is the regulatory body in US. So this means a sigh of relief for all the foreign companies and also death of US GAAP for all foreign companies listed in US. The decision was awaited since long and it comes as a breather for the mediocre companies listed in US. This will definitely result in cutting down of cost for those companies. As per the present requirement, if a company is having multi listing, it is required to follow USGAAP for US stock Exchange and IFRS for any other foreign stock exchange, basically European Countries. This further requires preparing two sets of books of account based on IFRS and USGAAP and the reconciliation of the same with the books of account prepared according to accounting system of home country. It was one of the major reasons for mediocre companies shying away from listing in US Stock Exchange. The verdict will encourage companies for US listing as they are no more required to comply with USGAAP.

Quick Update on New Code
Most recent automatic update: Mon Nov 15, 2010 5:57pm Thanks to Dave, Phil and Heidi for pointing out a couple of bugs in the new code. My auto-update code automatically detects when a MovieStock or StarBond is inactive and stops tracking it. Unfortunately, MovieStocks go "inactive" (so far as the code is concerned) on the weekend they go into wide release, and StarBonds go inactive (for a while) on the day they adjust. This has caused some glitches on the MovieStock side, and if now having an impact on StarBonds that have adjusted recently.

Why Do We Even Need Stock Exchanges in the US?
While there could be some truth to the above, the reality of the purpose that US stock exchanges serve could not be further from the truth. Stock exchanges play an important and vital role in the economy of the US. They encourage investment by providing a place for people to buy and sell the securities issued by corporates that are listed on US stock exchanges in a regulated and organized manner. Because of the atmosphere of investment created by US stock exchanges, directors of corporates can assess what the market feeling would be to any new issue of securities their company want to make. Moreover, it also allows investment banks to assess the risk of being involved in any such securities issue. Either way, as regulated markets, US stock markets have historically been shown to be the most ideal way for:
