President’s Message
Fall 2001

Dear ULA Members,
The ULA Legislative Committee sprung into action early this year! The Committee is focusing on funding the 21st Century Library Challenge Fund . The fund seeks $5,000,000 in private funds matched by $5,000,000 in state funds. This money will be used to assist Utah communities in building 21st Century Libraries. The ground work has been laid for the 2001-2002 Legislative session by identifying library directors and board members throughout Utah who will act as lobbyists to contact key legislators about the importance of funding the 21st Century Library Challenge Fund. The strategy is that by the time the legislature convenes the key leaders will already have Utah libraries on their radar screen. Senator Beverly Evans has agreed to sponsor this legislation.
The 21st Century Needs Assessment found that demand for library service will continue to grow. The Public Opinion Assessment found that there is support among Utahns for state involvement in funding library buildings. We are asking for your support. Passing this legislation will require a grassroots effort. Please visit the

As a result of a $75.7 million settlement with the recording industry, Utah libraries will receive more than 43,000 CDs in July, and that's music to librarians' ears. Utah was one of 43 states that sued several music distributors and recording companies. The defendants were accused of illegally trying to stop retailers such as Best Buy, Target and Circuit City from lowering CD prices. As a result, defendants agreed to pay $67.3 million to consumers who were members of the settlement group and $75.7 million worth of CDs to schools, colleges and libraries for music-related purposes. University of Utah Libraries Unveil Innovative New Catalog
August 11, 2010 by Barry Scholl On May 13, 2010, the University of Utah Libraries made a historical transition as they migrated from the Horizon catalog, also known as “UNIS” to a new catalog which merges the information resources of the S.J. Quinney College of Law Library, the J. Willard Marriott Library, the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library, and the McKay Music Library. In addition to the new catalog system, the University Libraries also implemented a “discovery layer” called Primo. Primo serves as the public interface to the new catalog. What is most exciting about Primo is that is allows users to search not only the catalogs these four libraries, but also includes resources that have typically been in separate databases such as our e-journals collections, and the University of Utah digital collections database. This new system presents library users with a single unified interface for the discovery and delivery of all local and remote scholarly information resources, including books, journals, articles, images, and other digital content. It offers the University community a service that is focused on the quick and efficient discovery and delivery of content, freeing users from the constraints of having to go to different locations to retrieve information resources and digital content, optimizing discovery and delivery of information across all institutional resources.

Utah Libraries Accept Offer
February 1993
The Humanists of Utah project to increase public awareness of humanism has been a major success. Last fall the Chapter was awarded a grant of $2,000.00 by the Fund for Chapter Expansion to finance the proposed project. The deadline for using the money was December 31, 1992. The project began with a letter to 80 public libraries in Utah asking if they would accept a subscription to the Humanist and display it in their reading room. They were also asked if they would accept and put into circulation a copy of Corlis Lamont's book The Philosophy of Humanism . The response was better than expected. About 80% of the libraries replied to our survey letter. Some of the libraries already subscribe to the Humanist and some already have copies of Lamont's book in circulation. Of the remaining institutions, 40 agreed to receive and display the Humanist magazine and 38 requested copies of The Philosophy of Humanism to add to their circulation shelves. The survey also revealed that the library at Utah State University has a nearly complete publication file of the Humanist magazine.
