News: Martin Luther King, Jr. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness, in a descending spiral of destruction. The chain reaction of evil must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation"

Uzbekistan: yesterday and today Uzbekistan has preserved well the relics from the time when Central Asia was the centre of Tamerlane’s empire, which also coincided with the development of learning and commerce. Cities of today’s Uzbekistan, including Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, Tashkent Shakhrisabz and live in the imagination of the West as symbols of oriental beauty and mystery. Many cities which are located on the territory of modern Uzbekistan, in ancient times were the centers located on the Silk Road, that road between the East and the West, on which caravans of goods were running. The road got its name from silk, the goods from China that was in great demand in Europe. The cities’ advantageous geographical location of cities makes them attractive for conquerors. The territory of modern Uzbekistan was conquered many times by various conquerors, including Alexander of Macedon. Alexander of Macedon founded at least 8 cities in Central Asia between 334 - 323 years BC. As for caravans, the started walking on the paths of the Great Silk Road later, since 138thAC when China opened its borders for trading.

Central Asia is one of the most ancient regions inhabited by man and one of the oldest centers of human cultures, as attested by numerous relics. The territory of present day Uzbekistan was the crossroads of Eurasia and a branch of the ancient Silk Road. It connected Europe and China, passed through the oasis settlements of Kokand, Samarkand and Bukhara. Is Samarkand region archeologists have discovered an area where primitive men lived more than 10,000 years ago. In the South of Uzbekistan a skeleton of the ancient man and some remarkable rock drawings were discovered. Traces of primitive men have also been found near Tashkent, in Khoresm and in the Kara-Kalpak region. In antiquity, the peoples of Central Asia maintained trade and cultural relations with the peoples of China, India, Iran, the Arab countries, the Mediterranean area, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Siberia.

History
Uzbekistan Table of Contents Uzbekistan, the most populous and arguably the most powerful state in Central Asia, has a long and magnificent history. Located between two riversthe Amu Darya to the north and the Syrdariya to the souththe region that is modern Uzbekistan has been one of the cradles of world civilization. Some of the world's oldest sedentary populations and several of its most ancient cities are located here. Beginning at the height of the Roman Empire, the region was a crossroads on the transcontinental trade routes between China and the West. Subject to constant invasion and to in-migration of nomads from the great grasslands to the north, Uzbekistan became a region of legendary conquests where various peoples with different traditions have consistently had to live together.
Early History
The wealth of Mawarannahr was a constant magnet for invasions from the northern steppes and from China. Numerous intraregional wars were fought between Soghdian states and the other states in Mawarannahr, and the Persians and the Chinese were in perpetual conflict over the region. Alexander the Great conquered the region in 328 B.C., bringing it briefly under the control of his Macedonian Empire. In the same centuries, however, the region also was an important center of intellectual life and religion. Until the first centuries after Christ, the dominant religion in the region was Zoroastrianism, but Buddhism, Manichaeism, and Christianity also attracted large numbers of followers.
