Greenwich Mean Time plus 11 hours. A series of earthquakes 22 million years ago pushed up masses of earth from under the sea. Gradually an archipelago of 83 coral and volcanic islands emerged and came to be Vanuatu (meaning 'rising land'). This island nation in the Western Pacific is characterized by volcanoes, mountains, tropical rainforests, black and white sand beaches, lagoons, and fringing coral reefs surrounded by warm turquoise water. Vanuatu formations and of volcanic origin, but mostly the latter and several volcanoes are active. The highest peak, Tabwemasana (1811 m/5942 ft), is on Espritu Santo. Most islands are forested, and some have fertile soils. The climate is wet and tropical, with an average annual temperature of 25C (77 F). Annual rainfall decreases from 3810 mm (150 in) in the northern part of the group to 2286 mm (90 in) in the south. The population is largely Melanesian, with minorities of Europeans, Chinese, and Vietnamese and other Pacific Island people living in harmony with the Ni-Vanuatu. Until 1980 Vanuatu, then known as the New Hebrides, was jointly administered by France and Britain as a "Condominium".. English, French, and Bislama are the official languages; numerous Melanesian languages are spoken.

Vanuatu culture retains a strong diversity through local regional variations and through foreign influence. Vanuatu may be divided into three major cultural regions. In the north, wealth is established by how much one can give away. Pigs, particularly those with rounded tusks , are considered a symbol of wealth throughout Vanuatu. In the centre, more traditional Melanesian cultural systems dominate. In the south, a system involving grants of title with associated privileges has developed. Young men undergo various coming-of-age ceremonies and rituals to initiate them into manhood, usually including circumcision

The list of guests of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme, Berliner Künstlerprogramm (BKP), reads like a Who’s Who of international contemporary cinema, music, literature and art. About 20 new names from all over the world are added every year. For twelve months, the artists live and work in Berlin at the invitation of the German Federal Foreign Office, the Berlin Senate (city government) and the DAAD, engaging in an exciting exchange with the city and the German cultural scene. Creative freedom and artistic dialogue are the central ideas behind the programme. The aim is to enable the artists, while in Berlin, to devote themselves fully to their work, free from the pressures of market mechanisms and censorship. An exhibition at the Federal Foreign Office in November 2010 gives an impression of the diversity of ideas inspired by the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme. Vanuatu stars as one of the most colourful nations on the planet with over 113 different languages, a multitude of dialects and a South Pacific island heritage that spans over 3,000 years of Pacific region immigration. Vanuatu traditions have risen from mainly Melanesian and Polynesian origins and the personality and cultural presence of Vanuatu is beautifully accented by impressive craftsmanship, the harmonies of song and traditional dances, a wealth of traditional food and feasting, annual festivals, age-old ceremonies and the eloquence of storytellers. In a world where the gentle dugong swims in blue water, where tropical weather warms the heart, and volcanoes rise to craft the horizon, travellers who embark on a Vanuatu holiday find an experience laden with mystery within a lush, dramatic setting. Similar to the stories of the Australian Aboriginal, Maori and Native American people, the Ni-Vanuatu tribes remember their oral tradition which is born from the sea, the islands, the tempests and volcanoes, the wildlife and pigs, and the origins of their rituals. The Vanuatu Cultural Centre is a must for the Vanuatu tourism experience, allowing visitors an opportunity to see an incredible collection of Vanuatu tribal art and artefacts. Highlights include an exploration of local history, the mysteries of the kava rituals and the introduction of Bislama, a form of English brought ashore by interactions between locals, sea cucumber traders and Europeans.

The socio-economic importance of non-timber forest products in the South Pacific: Focus on Vanuatu
    G. Olsson Gunilla Olsson is currently employed by the Swedish International Development Agency, Stockholm. The data for this article were collected during the course of a consultancy for UNDP/FAO project RAS/R6/036. South Pacific Forestry Development Programme. In most of the literature dealing with Vanuatu, the reader is left with the impression that the country's forests, in spite of extensive cover, are of little or no value. This article will argue the contrary: that the forests of Vanuatu may not hold high value as timber, but their non-timber value has always been, and continues to be, of significant importance. Implications for development are discussed. The 80 islands that make up the Republic of Vanuatu are estimated to be 75 percent under natural vegetation (Barrance, 1988). This is in contrast with the general situation in the South Pacific, where most countries have extremely limited forest cover. As part of the Second National Development Plan, 1987- 1991, objectives for the national forestry sector include improved efficiency of use of forest resources. A regional project supported by FAO and the United Nations Development Programme is helping 14 participating countries in the South Pacific, including Vanuatu, to upgrade the status of forestry development and thereby to improve the socio-economic well-being of their people. When the project was conceived, it was clearly stated that in considering priorities for forestry development in the South Pacific it is necessary to define forestry broadly, encompassing agroforestry and non-timber/non-wood forest products. The study that forms the background for the present article was commissioned in this context.
