Vanuatu Info
Vanuatu , officially the Republic of Vanuatu, is a Melanesian island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago is located some 1,750 km (1090 mi) east of Australia, 500 km (310 mi) north-east of New Caledonia, west of Fiji and south of the Solomon Islands. Vanuatu was first inhabited by Melanesian people. Europeans began to settle in the area in the late 18th century and in 1906 Britain and France officially claimed the country, jointly managing it through a British-French Condominium as the New Hebrides. An independence movement was established in the 1970s, and the Republic of Vanuatu was created in 1980.

Plenty of pics of the Fest The most recent festival, the Malampa Sandroing Festival held in Sesivi, West Ambrym, from 11-15 May 2008 was a significant cultural event not only for Vanuatu, but for the whole world. Sandroing is of great significance to a community’s cultural identity, but also in grave danger of being destroyed or disappearing altogether. Sponsored by UNESCO/Japan Funds-in-Trust for intangible heritage, the 2008 Sand Drawing Festival in Ambrym happily demonstrated that this unique Vanuatu tradition is still alive and may indeed be undergoing a revival of interest given the convergence of around 400 participants on Sesivi in May. Aesthetically, the sand drawings are very beautiful, and it was a privilege to witness the great skill and knowledge of the practitioners from all over Vanuatu’s islands including Ambrym, Pentecost, Malakula and Torba, as they ritually drew complex designs on the flat black volcanic sands and recited the stories and songs to go with them. However, it is vital to realize that sand drawings are much more than just pretty geometric patterns or pictures. They are a complex artistic ritual activity where art, story, traditional knowledge and meaning are interwoven to form a language of memory, place and community. Sand drawings express in a unique way the deep ni-Vanuatu connection to and understanding of the land, conveying a sense of community, identity, an interaction with nature and history that has evolved out of the spirit of the land and the hearts and minds of the people.

Vanuatu Events
For festivals which highlight the Pacific Ring of Fire, traditional Melanesian culture , and the twinkling South Pacific island identity, Vanuatu calls travellers and holiday makers from all over the world. With a packed seasonal calendar filled with Vanuatu events such as culinary festivals, bicycle tours, yacht races and golf championships, Vanuatu tourism offers a backdrop of towering volcanoes and spectacular beaches for their lively schedule. A Vanuatu map will show you the lay of island and sea, where the major cities of Port Vila and Luganville will play hostess. For much of the year, Vanuatu weather promises comfortable temperatures and idyllic conditions for outdoor events and festivals. Also aligning your Vanuatu holiday with the colourful local traditions, such as the mask, sand drawing, carving and arts festivals or the vibrant traditional dances like the rom dance, will prove a rich Vanuatu travel experience. Tune your ear with Melanesian harmonies and inspire your tastebuds with a tropical island feast of laplap, accented by warm scents of native flavours and luxurious dribbles of coconut milk. Check out John Frum Day held each year on Tanna island in February, where the 'cargo cult' tradition remembers the American soldiers during World War II who arrived by plane on the islands and are memorialised for their strange cargoes of sweets, canned meats, wrist-watches and Coca-Cola.

A background of Vanuatu, its people and its culture.
    ABOUT VANUATU - POPULATION
The population of Vanuatu is about 190,000; with 94% (the Ni-Vanuatu) being indigenous Melanesian. The remaining 6% comprises Europeans, Vietnamese, Chinese and other Pacific Islanders.
As a result of Vanuatu's dual Colonial past, English and French are the official languages, along with bislama , a pidgin language, based on English, that is understood by almost everyone. There are also over 115 different dialects spoken within the islands.
Only 61% of children reach class five level at primary school and only 20% go on to high school. This is due to the high cost of education in this country and also to the fact that children in remote, rural areas do not have easy access to schools.
    RELIGION
Like many Pacific Island nations, Vanuatu's missionary past has resulted in a mostly Christian population. The main denominations are Anglican, Catholic and Presbyterian. There is, however, a small percentage (around 8%) who still follow indigenous beliefs, based on animist principles.
