Vatican City Overview Vatican City is the smallest independent country in the entire world. It claims this title in the form of area of the city and the population. The pope himself runs the city, yet he has people below him to take care of the lower matters. These people are the President, Secretary General, and Deputy Secretary General. There are only 800 people that are currently living in Vatican City. Culture History Vatican City used to be part of Italy, until it gained its freedom with the Lateran Treaty on the eleventh of February, 1929. Even before this happened, the land on which this city is built, was considered holy land. In the great fire of Rome, this land became a big place of Christianity martrydom. Constantine, put the very first church here. It is also believed that the apostole Peter was crucified upside down, where the obelisk lay in the center of the courtyard.
