    Physiological effects of vegetarianism
    Nutrition Research Newsletter Jan, 1992
A previous study by researchers at Pennsylvania State University showed that absent or irregular menstrual periods were more common among vegetarian women than among nonvegetarians, suggesting that nutritional ractices may influence hormonal pathways [see NRN, May 1991, page 52]. The study described here was designed to investigate the effects of vegetarianism on other indicators of hormonal status in young women, including urinary hormone and calcium concentrations and spinal bone density. A carefully selected group of 27 vegetarian and 37 nonvegetarian premenopausal women was recruited. The women were similar in age, height, weight, marital status, and medical history, and had maintained their current diets for many years. All of the vegetarians ate eggs and dairy products. The frequency of menstrual irregularity was significantly higher in the vegetarian group (14.8 vs. 0%). Late-follicular-phase urinary concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone were twice as high in vegetarians as in nonvegetarians. Nonvegetarians had higher caffeine intakes, and caffeine intake was found to have a positive effect on urinary calcium excretion. However, neither caffeine intake nor vegetarianism was found to have an effect on bone density.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The European Vegetarian Union (EVU) is an umbrella organisation for vegetarian societies and groups in Europe, and works in the areas of vegetarianism nutrition health consumer protection , the campaign against world hunger animal rights ecology and general information. The main activities of the EVU are:
  • To support and represent member societies on a European level, and to offer a platform for close cooperation; To raise public awareness of, and promote vegetarianism, vegetarian issues and the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle; To lobby governments, European institutions and organisations for greater recognition of vegetarian issues in policy decisions; and To further promote the successful V-label scheme, in the interest of all vegetarian and vegan consumers across Europe. The V-Label is a standardised European vegetarian label from the EVU with the aim of easy identification of vegetarian products and services.
The EVU aims to support vegetarian organisations across Europe and bring them closer together. This is especially important in countries where the vegetarian philosophy has not yet had a chance to develop.

    Introduction
"My doctor says I have to drink a quart of cow's milk a day; my parents are convinced I'm doing something harmful; and I'm even starting to wonder if my diet is all right." Even the most committed and knowledgeable vegan may face doubts when pregnant. After all, the so-called experts are all questioning her dietary choices. Actually, it is reasonably simple to follow a vegan diet throughout pregnancy while eating foods that meet your needs and the needs of your baby. I know; I've done it twice. In addition, a series of studies  at The Farm, a community where vegan diets are a part of a socially responsible lifestyle, have shown that vegans can have healthy pregnancies and healthy children. Here are some things to consider.
    Weight Gain
How much weight you gain during your pregnancy has a marked impact on the baby's size and health at birth.

Vegetarian Statistics: How Healthy Is A Vegetarian
Have you been hearing great buzz about being a vegetarian? Did you see Pam Anderson's ad for PETA? And how she celebrated 2007 thanksgiving in a vegetarian way? Do you know that ex-presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich and his wife Elizabeth is a vegan?
With all the Ho Ha about becoming vegetarian going around, you're probably now contemplating on how becoming a vegetarian will work for you, or against you. Well perhaps the best way to show you the pros and the cons is to give you facts; vegetarian statistics kind of facts.
    Can't Argue With The Facts
Vegetarian Statistics show that vegetarians have lower risk of getting cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure.
According to vegetarian statistics, the probability of getting hypertension if you're a vegetarian is about ½ to 1/3 to that of a non-vegetarian.22% of Caucasian omnivores have hypertension while its only 7% for vegetarians. For African Americans 44% of omnivores likely has hypertension while only 18% have hypertension.
Staying on a vegetarian diet for a whole year lowers your cholesterol by 24.3%, as stated by several vegetarian statistics. So it generally follows that most vegetarians, if not all of them have lower cholesterol levels.

    Understanding Vegetarianism
Like the Sun, Moon, and Earth, there are three kinds of vegetarians in existence: ovo-lacto, a vegetarian that eats vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds and nuts, as well as eggs and dairy products. Lacto, a vegetarian that eats everything the "ovo-lacto" does, except eggs. Finally, we have vegans, a vegetarian that eats what the rest of the others eat, except for any kind of animal products, period. Each group of vegetarian is unique, but branches from the same tree of life. Why would anyone want to be a vegetarian? Well there are many reasons as there are stars in the heavens. Some reasons are for health purposes, religious/spiritual, environmental, and the love and protection of animals. Other reasons may be for very personal ones. No matter the reason, we all meet at the same intersection on the road of health. What Can Vegetarianism Do For Me? Science has proven time and again that vegetarians are among the healthiest people on the planet. They live longer and are less prone to chronic diseases. Eating a low fat vegetarian diet can also help in losing excess weight. Obesity can lead to adult onset diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and cancer. Eating a vegetarian type diet can reverse heart disease and other health complaints such as arthritis. In addition, the vegetarian diet can lower blood pressure. Because potassium is plentiful in fruits and vegetables, the vegetarian diet lowers blood pressure by helping the kidneys abolish sodium and modify blood pressure-regulating enzymes.

Personal and professional correlates of US medical students' vegetarianism
      Nutrition Research Newsletter Feb, 2007
Plant-based and vegetarian diets are potentially therapeutic, and are correlated with some physicians' likelihood to provide patient nutrition counseling. Vegetarian, versus omnivorous, diets have been associated in large survey and prospective cohort studies with lower body weights and lower rates of overweight BMIs, fewer diabetic complications and less self-reported diabetes, and lower mortality from ischemic heart disease and certain cancers. In US clinical intervention trials, a low-fat vegetarian diet has been shown (even without the effects of exercise) to reduce diabetic complications, serum cholesterol, and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. In addition to these findings, vegetarianism has been associated with eating less saturated fat, and more complex carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, fiber, folate, and other phytochemicals. All Class of 2003 medical students at 17 representative US schools were eligible for participation in this study at each of three questionnaire administrations (given at freshman orientation in 1999, at ward orientation, and during senior year).
