Vermont is noted for its rugged mountains, pristine lakes and rivers, and picturesque dairy farms. Vermont remains a fairly rural state, although its cities and towns have modernized and developed dramatically during the last 30 years. Prior to European exploration, the Abenaki people lived throughout the Vermont region. The state was named for its green mountains ( vert mont in French) by Samuel de Champlain in 1609. During the Revolutionary War, The Green Mountain Boys fought to keep Vermont independent from Massachusetts and New Hampshire. On March 4, 1791, Vermont joined the original colonies as the 14th state. The Green Mountains , the Connecticut River Lake Champlain , and the Appalachian Trail provide recreational opportunities for tourists. Burlington features an international airport, and car ferries cross Lake Champlain to New York State. The Trapp Family Lodge, founded by the von Trapps of "Sound of Music" fame, offers Austrian style hospitality in the mountains near Stowe. Hiking, skiing, and boat cruises out of

Geography: For those fascinated by people and places
A study with no limits: Geographic education is particularly powerful because it allows us to connect our intellectual inquiry with real-world problems in a very direct way. Because of its interdisciplinary orientation, geography allows us to see the world in all its complexity. Geographers are observers and analysts of space, place, and environment on scales from the local to the global. Just as one might say that historians study time, geographers study space.

Geography
The forested Green Mts. constitute the dominant physiographic feature of Vermont. They consist of at least four distinct groups, all traversing the state in a generally north-south direction. Largest and most important are the Green Mts. proper, which extend down the center of the state from the Canadian border to the Massachusetts line, rising to Vermont's highest peak, Mt. Mansfield (4,393 ft/1,339 m). The Taconic Mts., occupying the southwestern portion of the state, contain Vermont's important marble deposits. East of the Green Mts. and extending from the Canadian border to somewhat below the middle of the state are the Granite Hills, so called because of their valuable stone. The fourth group, sometimes called the Red Sandrock Hills, extends along the Vermont shore of Lake Champlain. In E Vermont there are also isolated peaks or monadnocks not connected with the principal ranges. The rivers of Vermont (the only completely inland state of New England) flow either into the Connecticut River or into Lake Champlain. The Winooski rises east of the Green Mts. and cuts directly through them to Lake Champlain. Grand Isle county, comprising several islands and a peninsula jutting down into Lake Champlain from Canada, is connected to Vermont proper by causeways.
