< 0.01). Male physicians reported they were asked more frequently by patients for a referral to another physician to perform Pap tests and CBE (p < 0.001). Also, male physicians perceived patients' embarrassment as a stronger barrier to performing Pap tests (p < 0.05) and CBE (p < 0.01) than female physicians. No gender differences were observed in screening rates or related barriers to mammography referrals. These findings suggest that physicians' gender plays a role in sex-sensitive examination, such as Pap tests and CBE. There is a need to facilitate physician-patient interactions for sex-sensitive cancer screening examinations by health education initiatives targeting male physicians and women themselves. The feasibility of providing sex-sensitive cancer screening examinations by a same-sex health provider should also be explored.

Commercial Buildings The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has benchmarking tools available for 10 prominent U.S. building types. These tools address both electric and non-electric fuels simultaneously (whole-building energy use) within each tool and also normalize for the key drivers of energy use specific to each building type. They represent the state-of-the-art in energy performance benchmarking for commercial buildings. Portfolio Manager is EPA's tool that allows users to track the energy performance of and benchmark buildings within their entire portfolio. Portfolio Manager operates on monthly energy use data. It is also used to support the qualification process for the Energy Star performance recognition available from EPA for high-performance buildings. This tool is widely used by both the private and government sectors. Go to EPA's Portfolio Manager Tool Target Finder is EPA's tool that allows a user to estimate an energy performance benchmark or target for a new building design. With this in hand, a user can test their design options toward achieving a desired performance target. Target Finder operates on annual energy use data.

Introduction
Benchmarking Your Building's
Energy Performance
Comparing annual energy use intensities (EUIs) can quickly show you how the energy performance of your building compares to others. Usually expressed in kBtu/sf, the EUI indicates the rate at which energy is used at your building. The example that follows illustrates building energy performance benchmarking applied to K-12 schools. Similar distributions that will allow you to benchmark the energy performance of 16 different building types are available at this website. Many of these are regionally-based, which help to account for weather, building construction, and building systems differences that exist across the U.S. The benchmarking distribution below (a descending cumulative histogram) was created by arranging the EUIs for 449 K-12 public schools across the U.S. in ascending order. For a specific EUI located on the x-axis, the y-axis value indicates the percent of the 449 schools that are less efficient (use more energy). From the figure, Tennessee's Daniel Boone High ranks at approximately 25%. This indicates 75% of U.S. schools are more efficient, suggesting this school may have sizeable opportunities for efficiency gains and energy cost reductions. Nebraska's Maxey Elementary, however, a recently constructed school with a geothermal-based heating and cooling system, is a model of energy efficiency outperforming over 90% of schools in the U.S. Locating where your school's EUI lies on the curve will show you how well it performs against other U.S. K-12 schools.

Assessing the Impact of Tech on Achievement Do Laptops Help Increase Test Scores? Assessing the Impact of Instructional Technology on Student Achievement by Lorraine Sherry, Shelley Billig, Daniel Jesse, and Deborah Watson-Acosta February 2001 The WEB Project is a five-year Technology Innovation Challenge Grant that was completed in September 2000. The purpose of this project was to infuse standards-based instruction in multimedia, digital art, music composition, and online discourse into the general arts and humanities curricula of Vermont K-12 schools. Multimedia technology was incorporated within six academic content areas: art, music, technology, history/social studies, English/language arts, and interdisciplinary studies. Students shared their works-in-progress with a virtual community consisting of other students, teachers, digital artists, traditional artists, musicians, composers, Web page designers and other experts. This was done via a virtual learning environment called The WEB Exchange, which resided on The WEB Project's server. Through threaded design conversations, students requested feedback on their works of art, music, and multimedia. They then filtered the feedback they received and used it to improve their final artistic products, which many of the participating students then posted on The WEB Exchange.

A sample of 9th-grade students (1, 293 individuals, 51% girls) attending compulsory schools in Reykjavik, Iceland, was surveyed and followed up 3 years later. The relationship between perceived control and substance use is examined concurrently at age 14 for experimentation with tobacco and alcohol and longitudinally (14-17 years of age) for daily smoking, heavy drinking, and illicit drug use. Taking into account sociodemographic characteristics (family structure, socioeconomic status, and gender) and parental and peer use, the results of concurrent analyses indicate that adolescents who expressed more personal control were less likely to have smoked and to have had a drink at age 14. Longitudinal analyses showed that perceived control at age 14 predicted both daily smoking and illicit drug use among girls at age 17 but not among boys. Conversely, perceived control did not predict heavy drinking among adolescents.

Module Home Page Assignments Email Instructor Discussion ... Course Outline Early, S., R. (2002). The integration of technology into public education: Promises and challenges. Rerived from: http://www.bookstoread.com/etp/earle.pdf One of the key points of the article is that integration does not mean only placement of the hardware in the classroom nor it is namely a synonym for computers. The article highlights some of the restraining forces of the technology integration. The barriers were grouped into first order barriers, extrinsic to teachers: access, time, support, training; and the second order barriers, intrinsic to teachers: attitudes, beliefs, practices, resistance). Changing attitudes and beliefs is the most difficult aspect of the change. The article emphasizes the fact that it is not the technology integration that results in improving student achievement, but it is the way we use technology in instructional practice.
