Update from the Chair: Probably the most exciting departmental news is that we have successfully concluded a search for a faculty member and got TWO!! The search for the mammary gland position produced a fabulous pool of candidates that visited campus and with the help of the Provost and Vice Provost I was able to recruit two of them. Dr. David Kerr is already on board and a biography appears later in this Newsletter. Dr. Tom McFadden, a very well known scientist who leads the New Zealand lactation research group at Ruakura, will be joining us in October. I am also hoping that we will rapidly progress in our search for a third faculty member in the equine area. We have also undergone a substantial amount of course and curriculum work that really strengthens us at the upper levels. We have more work to do, however I am very pleased with the progress. Part of that has been the reorganization of courses in connection with the VTC/UVM program. Our dairy management curriculum is really strengthening. Efforts are underway to get scholarship support in the Vermont legislature, by Larry Forcier and Bob Clark, President of VTC. We are hopeful that will lead to some success soon. Speaking of scholarships, we are making good progress in building up the James Welch Scholarship fund, established when Jim Welch retired. Jim and I are talking about how that can be best used to help Animal Science students interested in agriculture. We shall be actively promoting that fund to help our future students and I hope those of you that are able to, will help us in that process.
