The Neurology Service
at the VMTH
The Neurology Service:
The Neurology Service is by referral appointment only, on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Emergencies are seen as indicated through consultation with the client's referring veterinarian. For further information about having a patient examined by the Service, contact the Small Animal Clinic Reception Desk at (352) 392-2235.
The Neurology Service cannot answer direct questions about specific cases via the internet, it is not considered a sufficient standard to establish a valid client-patient-veterinarian relationship. These files are used for teaching our veterinary students and offered as general educational information. They should not be used solely as a means to diagnose or treat a condition. If you are not in our referral area and direct examination of your pet by the Neurology Service is not possible, then you may want to search for the closest neurologist at the ACVIM Neurology Database . If you need help with Integrative Medicine questions, you can seek the closest CAVM practitioner at the Database of the AHVMA (American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association).

Therapeutic Laser Stem Cell Therapy 1:  What is stem cell therapy (also called regenerative cell therapy)?      A:  Everyone has heard about stem cells and the exciting new ways        they can be used to treat diseases.  All tissues can heal or regenerate.       The source which gives rise to this rejuvenation is the stem cell.       What isn't known, is that  veterinarians can use stem cells right now to        treat certain debilitating  diseases and provide pain relief that may not        be responsive to  medications. 2:  Where are stem cells acquired?      A:  Stem cells are harvested from the fat of the pet that is going to be      treated.  Stem cells are in many tissues in the body and are able      to be separated, concentrated, and instilled into an area to be treated. 3:  Why aren't embryos used for stem cell therapy?       A:  When embryo stem cells are injected into a particular site, they        form "whole animals" which are called teratomas.  These do not heal

Sick Feral Kittens
Here's a question from Patti....
First of all, I never recommend feeding or taking care of strays. I know it pulls at your heart strings, but feeding them encourages them to come around and can lead to a small population of cats at your place. Stray cats have a high incidence of leukemia and feline AIDS and when they come together there is an increased risk of fighting. Depending on where you live, food outside can also encourage raccoons, skunks or other wild animals, some of which can carry rabies. Though rare in cats, rabies can happen in them and you certainly don't want to be exposed to that.
Now all of that being said, there is something that you can do. I don't know that you can rent them, but there are humane traps that capture animals alive and safely. You should be able to get them at a home supply place like Lowes or Home Depot, as well as possibly Tractor Supply or garden centers. You put food in the back and when they go inside the door closes, trapping them. Unfortunately, you may catch something besides the kittens, so be aware of that. If that doesn't work you may have to call animal control.
