Cultural differences between Vietnamese and Americans Cuisine Family Celebrations Four great philosophies and religions have shaped the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people: Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Christianity. Over the centuries, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism have melded with popular Chinese beliefs and ancient Vietnamese animism to form what is known as Tam Giao (or `Triple Religion'). The Vietnamese language (kinh) is a hybrid of Mon-Khmer, Tai and Chinese elements with many of its basic words derived from the monotonic Mon-Khmer languages. The most widely spoken foreign languages in Vietnam are Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), English, French and Russian, more or less in that order. Popular artistic forms include: traditional painting produced on frame-mounted silk; an eclectic array of theatre, puppetry, music and dance; religious sculpture; and lacquerware. Vietnamese Cuisine Vietnam is a long, skinny country stretching from Hanoi and the Red River in the north to Ho Chi Minh City and the fertile Mekong River Delta in the south. These ends are connected by a mountainous spine that runs along the South China Sea. On the west, Vietnam is bordered by Laos and Cambodia, and to the north, lies China. The food of the north, through stir-fries and noodle-based soups, shows the heavy influence of Chinese cooking. The mountainous middle section, with the former Imperial capitol, Hue, at its center, has an abundance of fresh produce.

Vietnamese New Year (Tet) - January 29, 2006 The more popular name for the Vietnamese New Year is Tet , where as the formal name is Nguyen-dan . Tet is a very important festival because it provides one of the few breaks in the agricultural year, as it falls between the harvesting of the crops and the sowing of the new crops. The Vietnamese prepare well in advance for the New Year by cleaning their houses, polishing their copper and silverware and paying off all their debts. They observe the custom of the kitchen god Tao for a week before the New Year. They believe there are three gods represented by the three legs of the cooking equipment used in the kitchen. The middle god is a woman, the other two are her husbands. It was once customary to provide the gods with a carp on which to travel. The carp represents the second last stage in the process by which animals are gradually transformed into dragons. They buy the carp from the market, bring it home and place it in a bucket of water to place at the altar of the house before it is later set free. A special rice pudding is eaten at New Year which must be prepared beforehand. The rice pudding is known as

More evidence of Oc Eo culture found in Ben Tre
Recent archaeological studies have revealed more evidence of the
existence of the Oc Eo culture dating back 2,000-2,500 years in the
Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre.
First traces of the ancient
culture were discovered by French archaeologist Louis Malleret, who gave
it the name of Oc Eo. The Oc Eo culture is believed to have formed and
developed in the southern delta, largely in An Giang, from the first to
the sixth century AD.
In the mid-1990s, a farmer named Huynh
Van Be in Binh Thanh village, Binh Phu commune found several stone
graters and axes in his garden. In 2003, a working team from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology (VIA) and the Ben Tre provincial Museum conducted an excavation in the area and discovered more stone tools and over 13,000 pieces of ceramics of all types. After three excavations and two exploration digs on a total area of 484.5 sq.m, the experts collected nearly 500,000 artefacts, with 99 percent being ceramics, and over 250 kilogrammes of animal and human bones as well as
