HISTORY
IMPORTANT DATES 111 BC
China conquered the northern part of present-day Vietnam, and later changed the name of the region to Annam. AD 939
China withdrew from Annam, and the Vietnamese kingdom of Dai Co Viet was established. Other Vietnamese kingdoms ruled southern areas of present-day Vietnam.
Vietnamese art and culture thrived during the Ly dynasty.
China seized control of Dai Co Viet, but resistance forces led by Le Loi drove the Chinese from the country and established the kingdom of Dai Viet.
Dai Viet conquered the southern Vietnamese kingdom of Champa, but intermittent fighting between the north and south continued until 1673.
The Tay Son began to seize control of much of Dai Viet from the Nguyen dynasty.
Nguyen Anh defeated the Tay Son and united the northern and southern parts of the country, which he renamed Vietnam.
The French seized control of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) and began establishing a colonial government in Vietnam.
France controlled all of Vietnam as well as Laos and Cambodia.
Japan assumed effective control of French Indochina.

The history of Vietnam is best characterized as one long, continuous struggle for freedom and independence. The country was ruled by the Chinese for nearly a thousand years from 111 B.C. to 939 A.D. It was also colonized by France for almost 100 years from 1859 to 1945.

In 221 BC, Tan Thuy Hoang, King of Tan (China), invaded the land of the Viet tribes. Thuc Phan, the leader of the alliance of Au-Viet tribes was respected as the chief of the resistance war against the Tan enemy that later, in 208 BC, was forced to withdraw. With his imposing power, Thuc Phan nominated himself as King An Duong Vuong and founded Au Lac Nation with groups of Lac Viet and Au Viet tribes. In 179 BC, Trieu Da, King of Nam Viet (China), invaded Au Lac country. The resistance of An Duong Vuong failed soon after this invasion. As a result, the northern feudalist took turns dominating the country over the next seven centuries, establishing their harsh regime in the country and dividing the country into administrative regions and districts with unfamiliar names. However, the country's name of Au Lac could not be erased from the people's minds in their everyday life.

Vietnams history is a long, exciting and fascinating one, with the oldest archaeological findings showing that people have been living there as far back as about a half million years ago - making them among the very first East Asians who practiced agriculture in that area. The first truly influential part of history in Vietnam occurred during the Bronze Age, when the Dong So culture was in Vietnam, dramatically advancing their level of civilization. Between 200BC and 938AD, the Chinese ruled over this region, having conquered the Red River Delta in the 2 nd century BC - a critical expanse in Vietnamese history. This led to the inclusion of Chinese population and culture within the Vietnamese borders. The native culture, though, hung on strong, with a strong sense of national identity among the people, and though many Chinese influences still exist in Vietnam, the traditional Vietnamese culture has hung on throughout the years and is still greatly predominant in that country.
