The Rogue River War erupted in October 1855, when a swarm of men from Jacksonville, a mining town in the Rogue River valley of southwestern Oregon Territory, massacred at least 28 Indians encamped in the vicinity of the Table Rock Reservation. That and several subsequent attacks on Rogue River valley natives were intended to spark a war that would employ miners, unable to mine owing to a long dry spell, as paramilitary "volunteers." Acquiring more land from the Indians was not a factor Leaders of the southwestern Oregon Indian people had already inked treaties relinquishing the lion's share of their homelands. The Rogue River tribes had endured the aggression of Oregon Trail and California Gold Rush immigrants, and had put up stiff resistance to them in the early 1850s. The

Hanoi Journal, 1967
Carol McEldowney
Edited by Suzanne Kelley McCormack and Elizabeth R. Mock A rare account of an American political activist's wartime trip to North Vietnam In the fall of 1967, Carol McEldowney, a twenty-four-year-old community organizer living in Cleveland, embarked on a remarkable journey. In a climate of growing domestic unrest and international turmoil, she traveled illegally to North Vietnam with fellow members of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) to meet the enemy face-to-face. She was determined to understand the foe that had troubled America's leaders in Washington since the end of World War II. With an eye toward history and a recognition of the significance of her journey, McEldowney documented her experiences in the journal reproduced in this book. Through her words we bear witness to a political ideology that saw a connection between the struggles of the poor in America and the tragedy of war-torn Vietnam. McEldowney searched for glimpses of everyday life that would help her to better relate to women in Hanoi and the hardships they faced during wartime. As she traveled in North Vietnam, she sought a deeper understanding of the events of her time. Her journal provides readers with a unique lens through which to study those events and gain a new perspective on the Vietnam War era.

Vietnam War Timeline
The Vietnam War was a major conflict of the Cold war. It had a significant impact on world affairs. Here we take a look at its timeline. After the 2nd World War America intervened in Vietnam to stop the spread of communism. Ultimately the Communist North Vietnam emerged victorious.
Timeline:
The occupying Japanese forces surrender to the Allies. The Vietminh (an indigenous Vietnamese group) led by Ho Chi Minh assumed power. The nation was called Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
The first Indochina War began.
The French fail in their attempt to destroy the Vietminh.
The Elysee agreement is signed between the French and former Emperor Bo Dai.
The People’s Republic of China recognized the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The US sent military aid to the French in Vietnam.
The French are defeated by the Vietminh in the battle for Dien Bien Phu. This weakened the French resolve to continue the war. The French negotiated a ceasefire agreement with the Vietminh at the Geneva Conference. The country was partitioned into two states. President Eisenhower quotes the Domino Theory regarding Southeast Asia. According to the theory if Vietnam becomes communist all of Southeast Asia will follow suit.
Ngo Dinh Diem assumed the Presidency of South Vietnam. Diem was an avowed anti-communist. He launched military operations against the Buddhist Hoa Hao and the Cao Dai religious sects.

Facts of the Vietnam War
The Vietnam War, like most other wars, has had terrible costs for both the losers as well as the winners. Vietnam, the country on whose land this terrible war has taken place has suffered great damage to its ecosystem and it has taken years and years for it to re-grow. People have died, families have been hurt and no one was left happy with the after effects of this war. In the year 1954, Vietnam was split into two separate parts: the communist north and the democratic south. Thereafter, a series of events took place that led up to a full-fledged war between these two countries and the war did not only include the Vietnamese, it also included the Americans, Australians and a few other nations.
The Americans and other nations supported the largely unpopular southern democrats, and although initially they meant to keep their involvement very limited, they ended up sending millions and millions of soldiers to Vietnam to prevent communism from spreading. Years and years of bitter guerrilla struggle in the typhoid ridden villages and rugged jungles of Vietnam eventually led to the victory of the North Vietnamese and the reunification of the country. Millions of soldiers, Vietnamese and Americans alike died in the struggle, and till today the country struggles to reinstate itself after the staggering damages made to its land, economy and people.
The Beginning of the End
When Ngo Dinh Diem was appointed to be the prime minister, with Bao Dai the then president, Vietnam was split into two separate countries: North Vietnam and South Vietnam. During this separation, more than 860 thousand people fled to the South and more than 50 thousand left for the north.

U.S. History - Most important U.S. event since 1950
Expert: Marc Kamin Question What do you think is the most important event of American History since 1950? How has it impacted America today? Answer Hi Ben, I'll be glad to offer my opinion. I think that President Kennedy's murder in 1963 was the most important event. Because of his death, the Vietnam War under President Johnson escalated. Because of the Vietnam War President Nixon behaved deviously to protect government secrets, which created a credibility gap in American political life. Due to the credibility gap, the American press became very antagonistic toward public officials, which created an atmosphere of hostility in public discourse. The Vietnam War also affected American military policy, and attitudes about American power, which affect us certainly today. If the Vietnam War had been avoided, much would be different. If Kennedy had not been killed, American soldiers would probably have been withdrawn in 1964 or 1965, thus avoided the growing war that occurred.

The History of the War Powers through the Vietnam War American history has seen a common pattern when presidents act in defense of the nation.

A Government Divided:
The War Powers Resolution in Purpose and Practice Dennis Johnson
Ohio State University
johnson.1599@osu.edu

Fall 2001
The history surrounding the pursuits of war and peace for the United States spans from the Revolutionary War over 200 years ago to the U.S. soldiers stationed halfway around the world in commitment to international peace in the new millennium. It was not until more recently in this history, that the War Powers of the executive and legislative came into question, with Congress seeking to restore its role in war making decisions. The War Powers Resolution, adopted in 1973, is the manifestation of this inquiry. To better understand the War Powers Resolution and the history behind it, one must examine the history of the War Powers, including constitutional guarantees, and how they have been carried out through history, the War Powers Resolution itself, and the implementation of the Resolution by the president since its adoption.
From the first battles fought after the ratification of the Constitution, to modern wars fought halfway around the world, the war powers granted to legislative and executive branches by the Constitution have been a topic of debate.
