Most Vietnamese-Americans, no matter how long they have been in United States, prefer to include some Asian food items in the menu on Thanksgiving. The main reason is actually not because they think it is tastier or a feeling of abandoning the culture, it is actually because it is easier and more convenient. Asian food being easier? Find out why. Turkey is not important! You would think that Thanksgiving without turkey is not really Thanksgiving. However, with the Vietnamese-American family, they do not mind substituting turkey with some other form of animal, say chicken. They are very good at many chicken courses, but Turkey is not a native to Southeast Asia. Quite frankly, the Vietnamese-Americans are not very good at knowing how to cook the turkey! According to my family, they even think that turkey is quite tasteless. But the real truth is that it is simply too time-consuming and easy to get it wrong. My Asian-American Thanksgiving experience Every year, my family members would take turns serving Thanksgiving. This year it would be my oldest aunt and uncle. Next year, it would be my other younger aunt and uncle. It has been fifteen years living in the United States, and I have never had a good American-style turkey experience. This does not mean that my family members not good cooks. We are very good cooks, including myself, when it comes to Vietnamese and other Asian cuisines. Even when we attended Vietnamese Thanksgivings other than that of our family, the turkeys are almost all the same; dry and tasteless.
