Report on the progress of the two Chinese orchestras of City of Dharma Realm and Bekerley Buddhist Monastery
Namo Fundamental Teacher Sakyamuni Buddha (3X)
All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Venerable Master, All Dharma Masters, All fellow cultivators, Amitofo.
The two Chinese orchestras were formed about three years ago. There are about 26 members in CDR Chinese orchestra and 15 members in BBM orchestra. Membership might increase or decrease as time passes. It has been a tradition that the two orchestras combined to perform. This gives the rare opportunity for the lay people from two different places to contact, interact, and help each other. Within last three years, they had combined to perform many times, including three Honoring Elders Days in CDR, once each for the Independence Day in Ukiah, and at CDR, four times for various celebrations at BBM, twice at CTTB for Mother鈥檚 Day and Parent鈥檚 Day, and once at Gold Mountain Monastery on Honoring Elders Day. Other than that, the CDR Chinese orchestra very often has interaction with the local community. They had performed at Convalescence Home, Charity Fair, Old Folks Home, and Sacramento Chinese New Year Celebration. This opens up a way of interaction between CDR and the community.

How Do Vietnamese-Americans Celebrate Thanksgiving?
Note: Turkey is Not Important!
Hugo Vander Yahoo! Contributor Network
Nov 30, 2009 "Contribute content like this. Start Here If you are invited to a Vietnamese-American family celebrating the American Thanksgiving, the first thing you would say, or smell is "hmm...doesn't smell like turkey!" Most Vietnamese-Americans, no matter how long they have been in United States, prefer to include some Asian food items in the menu on Thanksgiving. The main reason is actually not because they think it is tastier or a feeling of abandoning the culture, it is actually because it is easier and more convenient. Asian food being easier? Find out why.
Turkey is not important!
You would think that Thanksgiving without turkey is not really Thanksgiving. However, with the Vietnamese-American family, they do not mind substituting turkey with some other form of animal, say chicken. They are very good at many chicken courses, but Turkey is not a native to Southeast Asia. Quite frankly, the Vietnamese-Americans are not very good at knowing how to cook the turkey! According to my family, they even think that turkey is quite tasteless. But the real truth is that it is simply too time-consuming and easy to get it wrong.
My Asian-American Thanksgiving experience
Every year, my family members would take turns serving Thanksgiving. This year it would be my oldest aunt and uncle. Next year, it would be my other younger aunt and uncle. It has been fifteen years living in the United States, and I have never had a good American-style turkey experience. This does not mean that my family members not good cooks. We are very good cooks, including myself, when it comes to Vietnamese and other Asian cuisines. Even when we attended Vietnamese Thanksgivings other than that of our family, the turkeys are almost all the same; dry and tasteless.

Undaunted, they stayed, they kept quiet, they lived where they would not be in the way, they worked hard at humble and sometimes demeaning jobs and they waited, and waited. Impact of Recent Political Economic Changes on AsianAmericans In late 1996, when Democratic National Committee fundraiser John Huang was the center of the campaign donation scandal, the normally reticent Bay Area Asian Community leaders began speaking in a loud, though not yet coherent voice. AsianAmericans, with their long history as victims of racism and xenophobia, are pushing back. In the most visible act, Professor Lingchi Wang, a scholar at the University of California, Berkeley launched a national committee called AsianAmericans for Campaign Finance Reform to mobilize the community to take a stand against both political corruption and racism. He stated: We will not allow this legitimate reform to degenerate into a partisan or racial fight. It is our intention to be a full participant in these processes. We will fight against any antiAsian expressions and behaviors whenever and wherever they occur, as we will fight against any attempt to turn this legitimat

As a state delegate for 20 years, Peter Franchot was known for his progressive Democratic politics. And it was on that platform, he said, that he ran successfully for comptroller in November. Since taking office, he has applied those philosophies as he serves on the Board of Public Works, which reviews and approves state contracts, and the board has received attention for its hard stance toward minority business representation in state projects.

What poets and critics say: "A mesmerizing accomplishment - four voices at their climax: the dance, if we can call it that, the physics of being, the history and manual of dark beauty and the voleos of line, ink, stanza and voice, layers of loss, desire and the body in ecstatic explosions. Three drops of Lorca, one tincture of Mar韆 Luisa Bombal and a full vasija of Mong-Lan, a masterpiece, se駉res y se駉ras. A mathematics of fire." Juan Felipe Herrera
" . . . . That Mong-Lan succeeds at such an ambitious project in writing that is visually striking, musically complex, unabashedly erotic and deeply intelligent, is testimony to her very great poetic talents. This is a marvelous book, one I’ll return to again and again."
