Virgin Island residents have come from West African, European and American. The Dutch, the French and the Danish also contributed to the island's culture, as well as Arab, India and other Caribbean islands immigrants. The US dollar is used across the entire island, and cars are driven on the left side of the road. The dominant language is an English-based Creole. Created by African slaves from different areas of West Africa, Virgin Islands Creole is an English-based dialect with words and sentence structure derived from West African languages. Virgin Islands Creole is still used today, but it is not an official language. Webmaster@CountyWebsite.com

Caribbean and American, that is a description of culture in the United States Virgin Islands. You will find fast-food restaurants like Subway and McDonalds next to local restaurants serving pates and boiled fish. You will find large grocery stores selling everything from Campbells Soup to Sara-lee pound cakes. Around the corner from the grocery store will be a fisherman selling a fresh catch from his truck. On the radio you can hear calypso music, reggae, American pop, salsa, blues, oldies, rock and roll and many other genres. Florida oranges and strawberries are sold as are kenips, mangos and coconuts. Fashions include jeans, t-shirts, jerseys, polo shirts and other Western style dress. Local sports enthusiast watch and play baseball, basketball and football. And CNN news is broadcasted daily and discussed just as often as local gossip. Together the American and Caribbean combination makes the United States Virgin Islands a unique and interesting place. The population in the USVI is largely made up of Caribbean people whose ancestors were Africans and Europeans. You will find people from all across the Caribbean living in the Virgin Islands as well as Americans from the mainland, Europeans and Hispanics.

    Culture of the Virgin Islands
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Virgin Islander culture represents the various peoples that have inhabited the present-day U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands throughout history. Although both territories are politically separate, they maintain close cultural ties. Like much of the English speaking Caribbean, Virgin Islander culture is syncretic, deriving chiefly from West African European and American influences. Though the Danish controlled the present-day U.S. Virgin Islands for many years, the very dominant language has been an English-based Creole since the 19th century, and the islands remain much more receptive to English language popular culture than any other. The Dutch, the French and the Danish also contributed elements to the island's culture, as have immigrants from the Arab world, India and other Caribbean islands. The single largest influence on modern Virgin Islander culture, however, comes from the Africans enslaved to work in canefields from the 17th to the mid-19th century. These African slaves brought with them traditions from across a wide swathe of Africa, including what is now Nigeria, Senegal, both Congos, Gambia and Ghana. Virgin Islands culture continues to undergo creolization, the result of inter-Caribbean migration and cultural contact with other islands in the region, as well as the United States. Migration has altered the social landscape of both countries to the extent that in the British Virgin Islands, half of the population is of foreign (mostly Caribbean) origin and in the U.S. Virgin Islands, most native-born residents can trace their ancestry to other Caribbean islands.

The Virgin Islands blend many influences into their charming and distinctive culture
Cultural Connection Many influences have shaped the heritage of both the British and the United States Virgin Islands, but European and African cultures have left the most visible imprint on these islands. The region's arts, language, cuisine, and the names of places reflect the African and European people who have shaped the Virgin Islands, history - a history that has endured slavery and sickness. But the islands have emerged as beautiful vacation destinations, each with a rich and fascinating culture and history to explore.
    Heritage
Most of the population in the United States and British Virgin Islands is made up of people of African descent, and the rest are expatriates from places such as North America, Europe, Latin America, and other Caribbean countries. International immigrants, who are increasing in number, are primarily drawn to the swelling tourism and service industries on the islands, but there are a number of reasons to relocate here. The charm and appeal of these amazing tropical islands are hard to resist. In the British Virgin Islands, citizens who are born in the country as well as naturalized citizens are called "Belongers." Belongers have an advantage over non-residents of the islands when it comes to job preference and land purchasing. This favoritism toward citizens of the British Virgin Islands has created some animosity among non-Belongers, who are often considered outsiders by locals and in turn are denied certain privileges by law. Yet these non-citizens are needed to fill the growing number of jobs on the islands.

Identification. In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed on an island he named Santa Cruz. Driven away by the Carib Indians, he sailed northward to a nearby group of islands he called Las Once Mil Virgenes, in honor of Saint Ursula. The French took Santa Cruz from Spain in 1650, renaming it Saint Croix. The towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted on Saint Croix and Charlotte Amalie, the capital, on Saint Thomas were founded by the Danes and named after Danish royalty. Location and Geography. The country lies seventy miles east of Puerto Rico, in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean, and is composed of three large and fifty small islands totaling 136 square miles (352 square kilometers). Saint Croix, the southernmost and largest island, has land suitable for agriculture. Saint Thomas, forty miles to the north, has the highest point on the islands, with little tillable land. With a good port at Charlotte Amalie, it became a commercial center with reliance on the slave trade. The smallest of the main islands, Saint John, was donated by Laurence Rockefeller in 1956 as a national park. In 1996, Water Island, off the southern coast of Saint Thomas, was officially added to the country.

A Brief History of the U.S. Virgin Islands
Historians document that the first inhabitants, the Ciboneys, arrived on the islands during what is considered the Pre-Ceramic Culture. Arawaks were the next to arrive, establishing sites on St. John and St. Croix around 100 AD. Probably the best-known inhabitants, and those to arrive next, were the savage Caribs and the more peaceful Tainos. Evidence of their time in the islands has been unearthed in recent years, and includes stone griddles, zemis (small carvings depicting the faces of their gods) and petroglyphs which are rock carvings visible on St. John’s Reef Bay Trail.
The Caribs had taken control of St. Croix, then called Ay Ay, when Christopher Columbus sailed into Salt River on his second voyage in 1493, claiming the islands for Spain. The battle between the Indians and Columbus is considered the first insurgence in the New World. After renaming the island Santa Cruz, Columbus headed north where he spotted a chain of islands. He proclaimed they would be called Las Once Mil Virgenes (11,000 virgins) in honor of Ursula, martyred by the Huns for refusing to marry a pagan prince.
