In the spring of 1962, boxers from two Caribbean islands met in the ring at New York City's Madison Square Garden where they battled for the World Welterweight Championship. The bout between Emile Griffith from the Virgin Islands and Benny "Kid" Paret from Cuba has been described as a grudge match and its tragic conclusion shocked the boxing world. Griffith, for whom St. Thomas' Emile Griffith Park on Veterans Drive is named, lives today, at age 62, in New York City. He is known as one of the world's greatest boxers. Five times a world champion, he held both the World Welterweight and Middleweight Titles. He fought a record-breaking 339 title-fight rounds and 23 title fights, facing ten different world champions. In his 112 professional fights, he "went the distance" in all but two bouts-he was knocked out by Ruben "Hurricane" Carter and received a TKO by Argentina's Carlos Monzon. Griffith was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

The principal islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. When Christopher Columbus explored the islands in 1493, he found the Carib people living there. By 1596 most of the Caribs had fled or been killed. The British Virgin Islands were annexed in 1672. The English planters' slave-based sugar plantations declined after slavery was abolished in the first half of the 19th century. The islands received a separate administration in 1956 as a Crown colony. Tourism is the islands' mainstay.

Star Filled Nights (In Both Senses!)
by Vivian Williamson-Bryan The Cultural Capital of the World! Not quite the descriptive phrase one might associate with St Thomas. Beach capital. Sailing capital. Even cruise ship capital. But cultural capital? I don't think so. But just wait - we're working on it. While not quite up to that lofty designation - yet - we're not a total cultural backwater either. And you thought you had to go to a big, dirty, smoggy, congested (I could go on forever) city to be entertained on a higher level! Not. Over the years such show business luminaries as Bill Cosby, Chuck Mangione, Natalie Cole, Lionel Hampton and Tito Puente (this list could also go on forever) have come to entertain the island's residents and visitors at one of the most beautiful outdoor venues imaginable - Reichhold Center for the Arts. Reichhold (no one here says any more than that - just like when was the last time you heard someone refer to Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts? Human nature likes Isn't is amazing that a dinky little island like St Thomas has such a terrific showcase for performers? The credit - and I do mean all of it - goes to one man - Henry Reichhold.

Watch Out For Those Sidewalks!
by Vivian Williamson-Bryan Contrary to popular opinion, it is not true that St Thomas's sidewalks are rolled up at 5 pm! It just seems that way. Our nightlife isn't apparent to the casual onlooker - and certainly not to the tourist fresh off the plane (we don't count those ones off the boat - most of those pull out by 6 pm - you'd think they were going to turn into pumpkins or something) - but there is some if you look. Really. Since we don't have the usual collection of TGIFs, bowling alleys, roller skating rinks, amusement parks or that ever popular indoor entertainment complex - the mega mall - just what do we have? Well ... probably as many diversions - if not more - than the average smaller city (and it's no fair comparing us to NYC or DC either!). While not quite the Great White Way, the St Thomas "cultural"/theatre scene is surprisingly robust. Besides the Reichhold performances (big time culture), there are regular performances by the local theatre group, Pistarckle Theatre (their productions are lots of fun - rollicking musicals seem to be a favourite - The Wiz, Nunsense

    St. Thomas
From colonial jewel to modern paradise.
St. Thomas's history and culture alone are worth a visit to the island. Fort Christian , a U.S. National Landmark, is the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands and home to the Virgin Islands Museum, where early island memorabilia and old maps trace the islands' history. Market Square, a bustling produce marketplace, was once one of the West Indies' busiest 18th-century slave markets. Also of interest is the Synagogue of Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth Hasidim, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the United States. On nearby Government Hill, looming over Charlotte Amalie, stands Blackbeard's Castle. Known during colonial times as Skytsborg, this 17th-century fortified tower also serves as a popular restaurant and hotel. Located in the hills not far from the heart of Charlotte Amalie, Government House has been the center of government in St. Thomas since the mid-1860s. Visitors interested in seeing St. Thomas's political life may tour the building's first two floors. The 99 Steps, made by bricks that were once used as ballast on Danish and British ships, were built into the hillside to keep the orderly grid of the city intact. Historic Places of Worship
