As we mature, we think about the teachers who have inspired us to think, to question, to reason, and to create. Good teachers are as varied as the methods they use, but they have common characteristics. Not only are they competent and qualified in their fields, but they are caring individuals as well. They want to make a difference in the lives of others, and they never stop learning themselves. The Hollins program Education courses emphasize content knowledge, principles of effective teaching and learning, and specific skills. Not only will you learn more about art, history, math, science, and other disciplines, but you'll also learn how to present these subjects to children in ways that engage them and encourage their interest in learning. Meeting licensure requirements Because no college or university in Virginia offers a major in education, students seeking teacher licensure major in a liberal arts or sciences discipline and take a sequence of education courses. When you graduate from Hollins, you'll be prepared to meet licensure requirements in Virginia as well as every other state. Hollins was the first graduate program in the Roanoke Valley to allow college graduates in the liberal arts to earn teaching licensure and a master of arts in teaching at the same time.

Fotolia.com Education of intellectually gifted students, unlike other areas of special education, is not mandated by the federal law IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). Therefore, if there are guidelines at all, the requirements for teacher licensure vary dramatically from state to state.
    Gifted Education in Virginia
  • Unlike some of its neighboring states, Tennessee, for example, Virginia's Department of Education does not include education of gifted students as part of special education. Therefore, teachers of gifted students are not required any training in special education. Also, each school district is allowed to establish its own eligibility criteria and determine how it will deliver services to those students who are eligible for gifted education services.

    Alternate Routes to Teaching
General Certification Requirements Each state has unique requirements for teacher licensure or certification. For information about the requirements in your state, be sure to check with your state Department of Education. Even though most states have unique requirements, teachers are typically required to fulfill the following basic requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree, and in some states, a post-baccalaureate or master's degree. For elementary education, either a major or minor in education (for B.A.) or a Masters in Education will be required.
For secondary subjects, a degree in the teaching area. An approved, accredited education program that fulfills student teaching and practicum requirements must be completed.
In addition to the major, proof of a strong liberal arts foundation may be required. Most states require a passing grade on their state test or the PRAXIS exam. Some states require proof that you have taken a variety of college courses in basic subject areas (English, math, science, social studies, and language), particularly for obtaining licensure in elementary education.
  • Alternate Routes to Teaching To recruit more teachers, especially in areas with a shortage of teachers, a number of states have programs that offer nontraditional routes to teaching. Several have special licensing procedures for non-traditional applicants. The requirements for an alternative teaching licenses can differ by state. See the your state's Department of Education website for further information or search for alternate routes to teaching on the
