Virus Problems of Potatoes
Mary E. Burrows and Thomas A. Zitter USDA-ARS and Department of Plant Pathology Cornell University Ithaca NY April, 2005 Potatoes can be infected by many different viruses that can reduce yield and tuber quality. Virus diseases can often be diagnosed by mosaic patterns on leaves, stunting of the plant, leaf malformations, and tuber malformations. Symptoms are not always expressed due to interactions between the virus and the potato plant, growing conditions such as fertility and the weather, or the age of the plant when it is infected. Serology and nucleic acid detection techniques are often used to diagnose and characterize suspected virus diseases. Listed below are several common viral diseases of potatoes in New York , a description of the viruses and vectors, as well as management options. POTATO VIRUS Y Virus description and symptoms Potato virus Y (PVY) is one of the most prevalent and important viruses in potatoes. Recently, strains of PVY which can cause necrosis (dead spots on leaves and in tubers) have been discovered, creating more concern about this widespread virus. PVY is a

A virus is a unit of infectious genetic material smaller than any bacteria and embodying properties placing it on the borderline between life and non-life. Viruses routinely infect the cells of both eukaryotes (such as animals insects , and plants ) and prokaryotes (such as bacteria). Viruses comprise genetic material contained within a protective protein shell, a composition that distinguishes viruses from prions (only protein) and viroids (nucleotides of RNA without protein coat). Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites , meaning they can reproduce only by entering a host cell and commandeering its reproductive capacities to reproduce the virus. A virus that infects

Virus (1999)
A ghostly ship looms silently ahead as the crippled, ocean-going, salvage tug Sea Star approaches. The Sea Star crew, their ship slowly sinking, has sought refuge in the eerie calm of the eye of a typhoon to make repairs and hopefully avert disaster. But something's terribly wrong. The ship, a Russian science vessel bristling with high-tech radar, electronics and other wonders, appears to be deserted. Unfortunately for the crew of the Sea Star, nothing could be further from the truth. Shelter from the storm turns into terror on board as they find themselves stalked by a mutating alien life form that has traveled across time and space, an energy force unlike any in the universe. It is powerful. Intelligent. And it has found the perfect planet to inhabit. Now, in order to survive, it must destroy the one threat to its existence: a virus called man.

    Hoaxes and email chain letters
    Background
Chain letters are all too familiar to most email users. Emails instructing recipients to 'forward to 10 other people', or even 'forward to everyone you know', have been circulating since the early days of the internet. Many of them are little changed since that time, while some introduce new themes and fresh topics. Some carry serious messages and tragic stories, often accompanied by improbable claims that money will somehow be raised for the subject of the story, courtesy of some kind philanthropist or corporation. Some promise incredible rewards for those who pass on the message. Some feature full-blown scams, instructing recipients to pass on personal data or even cash as part of the process. Others spread unlikely urban myths and hoaxes, many of which have featured computer viruses. The common attribute of all these emails is the appeal to forward the message to many people. However, such an action - no matter how well-meaning - is not helpful. Aside from the increased network load, adding to the flooding of inboxes with unwanted spam email, another unwanted consequence is the forwarding of large numbers of email addresses, thanks to the common use of simple forwarding and cc features. Some chain letters may have been set up for the very purpose of gathering email data in this way, for use in spamming. Another result is that the hoax becomes 'well known' and listed on pages such as these. This fame (of sorts) no doubt leads to some degree of satisfaction for the hoax perpetrator, encouraging them to continue spreading such dubious chain mails.

Principles of Virus Architecture
(and a little bit of history)
Design of the protein shell
The complex arrangements of macromolecules in the virus shell are minute marvels of molecular architecture. Specific requirements of each type of virus have resulted in a fascinating apparent diversity of organization and geometrical design. Nevertheless, there are certain common features and general principles of architecture that apply to all viruses. In 1956, Crick and Watson proposed on theoretical considerations and on the basis of rather flimsy experimental evidence then available, principles of virus structure that have been amply confirmed and universally accepted. They first pointed out that the nucleic acid in small virions was probably insufficient to code for more than a few sorts of protein molecules of limited size. The only reasonable way to build a protein shell, therefore, was to use the same type of molecule over and over again, hence their theory of identical subunits The second part of their proposal concerned the way in which the subunits must be packed in the protein shell or capsid. On general grounds it was expected that subunits would be packed so as to provide each with an identical environment. This is possible only if they are packed
