Arts Grads, School Make Headlines
December 19, 2008 - In the News U of G's School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM) is featured prominently in this month's issue of Canadian Art , one of the country's leading visual arts magazines. The special issue is devoted to Canada's art schools. A feature story on the "Top 10 Canadian Grads" includes two recent SOFAM graduates, Victoria Cheung and John Eisler. Examples of their work are also included in an online supplement. For the past five years, language has been the primary medium and subject matter for Cheung, a Guelph-based artist. Using language, she produces art that can ask questions, tell stories, organize, criticize and confuse. She recently had an exhibit at Art Metropole in Toronto. An abstract painter, Eisler studied painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design before coming to U of G. He has exhibited regularly since 1997, including at Guelph's Macdonald Stewart Art Centre In addition, work by Kristan Horton, a 2007 MFA graduate, is also highlighted in the magazine's "Artist Project" feature. Horton's work is inspired by popular culture, particularly film. His art has been shown all around the world, including at galleries in Paris, Tokyo and Hilsinki. He also attended the Ontario College of Art and Design.

Lacomis Garcia grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . She was educated at Evergreen State College , which is situated in Olympia, Washington , home to many alternative and modern artists. Although enrolled as a photography student, Lacomis Garcia also studied film editing and gender studies. She left Philadelphia in 1992 to explore the United States with her camera, and quickly found a home in St. Paul, Minnesota. The opportunity to relocate to Seattle, Washington arose in 1998 and with her camera and extensive photographic experience, she embraced the chance. She was drawn to the creative and liberal minds of the lush natural arena that embraced The Evergreen State College, and found herself completing an undergraduate degree soon after her arrival to Seattle. Drawn to the history of the New York City publishing world, Lacomis Garcia applied for an internship at the

25 Years of Canadian Art: The History Behind the Headlines
Online Sep 23 2009 by Jocelyn Laurence Canadian Art, fall 1988 cover, featuring Attila Richard Lukacs Canadian Art, fall 1988 cover, featuring Attila Richard Lukacs
When I was hired as the second editor of Canadian Art in 1988, I felt like a kid in a candy shop—a sentiment the fourth and current editor, Richard Rhodes, echoed when I ran into him just after he took over the reins in 1996. I’d spent the previous decade working as a magazine editor, but this particular publication was different. I couldn’t believe I would be paid to think and learn about Canadian art and, as a pornographic sideline, lust after a drawing here, a photograph there, a massive painting that I yearned to bond with but had to admit wouldn’t fit through my living-room door. To me, it wasn’t just a job; it was an invitation to be a part of what I’d loved since I was a teenager: the visual arts. In the '60s, I lived in a minuscule English village where you had to walk half a mile to catch a bus that would take 25 minutes to transport you to the nearest town. Then it was 45 minutes by train to London. But at least once a month, I’d make my laborious way to the city and immerse myself in the Tate (no Tate Modern yet), private galleries and whatever big-box shows were on offer. In 1983, Canada lost its two national visual-arts magazines:

INNOVATIVE ARTS:
THAT WHICH ROARS by Robert Sievert (Susan Roecker: Spirochetes) Peekskill is a sleepy little town up the Hudson River that has undergone decline, renovation and rebirth. It has a real Americana charm. Once a middle-class suburb it is now a burgeoning art community. There is artist housing, and new galleries all set in a prewar town filled with vintage storefronts that inspire images of a former America. But the 21st Century has moved in and Galleries such as Innovative Arts are ready to supply upper Westchester with a hip bohemia and cultural focus. EXIT ART: ALTERNATIVE HISTORIES by Robert Sievert Colorful guests packed EXIT ART opening night EXIT ART is a gallery that has been around for 27 years. It had a space downtown where they specialized in fringe art, art that was out of the mainstream. Now Exit Art has morphed into "arts center" that has a space on 10th Avenue and 36th St. This was the site for a new show
