64. Volcano Photographs
Close-up photographs of what lava looks like after it has cooled. Taken at volcanoes in Hawaii and Indonesia.
http://www.heptune.com/volcano.html
Volcano Photographs from Hawaii and Indonesia by Brenna Lorenz The first set of photographs was taken at Kilauea, an active shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. This volcano is located over a hot spot, and is not located on a plate boundary. Shield volcanoes are the largest type of volcano on Earth and in the Solar System. Kilauea is so large and its slope is so gentle and gradual that many people visiting Volcano National Park at its summit don't realize that they are standing on the volcano. Park personnel say that people are always asking. "Where's the volcano?" This first photograph taken near the peak of Kilauea shows a former lava lake, now with a thick skin covering the still-molten magma a short distance underneath. The wispy white spots on the floor of the crater are places where steam and other volcanic gases are emerging from the magma. Visitors can take a hike along a trail crossing the lake surface. This photograph, taken from a helicopter, shows the vent that was active in 1996. Lava flows have covered roads and neighborhoods on the seaward side of Kilauea.

Volcanoes
What is a Volcano?
A volcano is a mountain where hot gases and molten rocks break through the Earth's crust. This process is called a volcanic eruption Volcanoes have been important features of the Earth's surface for millions of years. They were probably the first landforms of the newly-formed Earth. Like all landforms, volcanoes are constantly being changed by different forces of nature. New volcanoes are constantly being formed and the old ones are being destroyed. Some existing volcanoes have been around for millions of years; others, for only a few thousand years.
Volcanic Eruptions
Volcanic eruptions usually happen in the same places. If we look at a map of the Earth's tectonic plates we will see that the majority of volcanic eruptions happen on the boundaries of these plates. That is because eruptions are caused by plate tectonics. When tectonic plates collide or pull apart, they break and change the inside layers of the Earth. When the Earth's crust breaks, the hot, liquid rock of the mantle layer 'escapes' to the surface. The mixture of molten rock, crystals and dissolved gases from the mantle is called magma. When magma erupts on to the Earth's surface, it is called lava

The Burgh's Volcanoes Page Volcanoes have been my biggest interest since the May 18th, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. This interest had been expanded when I was in the Navy. During that time in the Navy I had served at three duty stations. As luck would have it, I was next to an active volcano at each station. Here are the three volcanoes I had been stationed near, and the dates I had seen them actively erupting: Mt. Etna, Sicily - Dec. 1992-93; Mt. Erebus, Antarctica - Feb. 1994; Kilauea, Hawaii - Mar. 1997.

Half.com *Also starring: Gaby Hoffman , Jacqueline Kim, Don Cheadle Keith David , John Corbett Reviewer Roundup Steve Rhodes review follows Walter Frith read the review Review by Steve Rhodes Hollywood's paucity of ideas has given way to a surfeit of twins. This is the year of two movies for every concept. Steve Profantaine's story is being duplicated with PREFONTAINE and PRE. There are two comedies about tenth high school reunions, GROSSE POINTE BLANK and ROMY AND MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION. And in the blockbuster category, we have two disaster movies about volcanoes. One which played close, but not close enough, to parody was called DANTE'S PEAK. The other is the serious, special effects extravaganza known as VOLCANO. It is also the only one of the two volcano movies with decent acting. Be warned, however, the year is early so Hollywood could well turn any or all of these twins into triplets. But let's hope not.

PURCHASE DVD Time: 90 mins. Rating: PG-13 Genre: Action/Disaster In the duel of volcano movies, VOLCANO wins by a slim margin. Mainly becuase it doesn't make its lead actors look completely silly and pathetic by putting horribly trite and stupid things to say in their mouths. However, it almost lost because it, yet again, destroys Los Angeles, which I know is the modern Sodom and Gomorra to many people, but as a resident of that city is getting a little tiresome. I don't have much to say to recommend or dissuade viewers from watching this film. It didn't really leave me with an opinion one way or the other. It wasn't so stupid as to make it unwatchable, but it wasn't all that exciting either. The effects were good (but not spectacular), if a little silly. Lava oozing down Wilshire Boulevard. An eruption under the Beverly Center. Please. It's very hard to take this kind of thing seriously (especially when you've been through real disasters), but the movie does and that at least keeps it from being completely campy. Tommy Lee Jones plays the head of the Office of Emergency Management who's supposed to be taking a vacation to spend time with his visiting 13-year-old daughter, but gets pulled into the action after an accident in the sewers. He cares so much for the city and its residents he's going to do everything in his power to save it. Anne Heche plays the geologist who reaizes that this is no normal eartquake activity, but a major geological event. They team together to rescue the city from absolute destruction. Both intelligent and likeable they actually give some weight to this ridiculous story. Which is gravely needed since there really isn't much of a plot. City explodes, people are injured, heroes come to the rescue, father saves daughter, blacks and whites learn to get along, yada, yada, yada.
