Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In (only two years after the invention of basketball), William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass. (only minutes from the birthplace of basketball), decided to blend elements of tennis, baseball, basketball, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of "mintonette". Morgan used the bladder of a basketball to provide a lighter ball with a more lively bounce. He borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the height of an average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. The offensive style of setting and spiking was first demonstrated in the Philippines in 1916. Over the years that followed, it became clear that standard rules were needed for tournament play, and thus the USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) was formed in 1928. Two years later, the first 2-man beach volleyball game was played, though the professional side of the sport did not emerge until much later. Not surprisingly, the first beach volleyball association appeared in California (1965), and the professional players united under the auspices of the AVP (American Volleyball Professionals) in 1983. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, American men and women took gold and silver medals in indoor volleyball competition. Four years later at the Olympics in Korea, the men once again scored gold. Starting in 1996, 2-man beach volleyball was officially introduced to the Olympics. Today, there are more than 800 million volleyball players worldwide, 46 million of them in the U.S. A TIMELINE OF SIGNIFICANT VOLLEYBALL EVENTS.

Volleyball History and the Evolution of the Sport
Volleyball originated in the United States in 1895 as a blend of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Today, volleyball has spread to 211 countries around the world, and is recognized as a truly international, widely played, popular sport. In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass. Morgan created the game of volleyball, at that time called mintonette. In 1896, the first official game of Volleyball was played at Springfield College. In the year 1900, Volleyball was popular enough that a new ball was customized for the sport. Five years later, Volleyball also spread to Cuba. This international signified the start of the Volleyball era. In 1907, Volleyball was presented at the Playground of America convention as one of the most popular sports. This was the first credit the sport received, and helped to further the sport recognition. Over the next five years volleyball spread to Central American countries.

Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. The complete rules are extensive. But simply, play proceeds as follows: A player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court. The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. They may touch the ball as many as three times. Typically, the first two touches are to set up for an attack , an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court.

The history of volleyball is closely linked to that of another popular court game. In fact, just eight miles and four years separate the historic development of volleyball and its cousin basketball. A Game for the (Middle) Ages
Morgan conceived a court game he originally called mintonette. He chose the name because his new sport was related to badminton. Mintonette was played on a court divided by a six-foot, six-inch net. Teams volleyed the ball back and forth across the net until one team missed. The first competitive game of volleyball was played July 7, 1896.

He called it "mintonette," until a professor from Springfield College (Springfield, Mass.), noting the volleying nature of play, proposed the name of "volleyball."
The first rules were written by Morgan and printed in the first edition of the Official Handbook of the Athletic League of the Young Men's Christian Associations of North America (1897). The game soon proved to have wide appeal for both sexes in schools, playgrounds, the armed forces, and other organizations in the United States, and it was subsequently introduced to other countries.
In 1916 rules were issued jointly by the YMCA and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The first national U.S. tournament was conducted by the National YMCA Physical Education Committee in New York City in 1922. The United States Volleyball Association (USVBA) was formed in 1928 and recognized as the rules-making, governing body in the United States. From 1928 the USVBAnow known as USA Volleyball (USAV)conducted annual national men's and senior men's (age 35 and older) volleyball championships except during 1944 and 1945 at the end of World War II. Its women's division was started in 1949, and senior women's (age 30 and older) was added in 1977. Other U.S. national events are conducted by member groups of the USAV such as the YMCA and the NCAA.

zSB(3,3) Beginnings Volleyball history began in a town called Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895. The sport was developed at the YMCA by William G. Morgan as an alternative for the older men that was less taxing than basketball. Originally called Mintonette, it took the net from tennis and took cues from basketball, baseball and handball. The net was only 6'6" high, just above the average man's head. Originally, there was no limit to the number of players on a team or the number of contacts per side and the game was primarily played from the ground. Development The set and hit (or spike) was first developed in the Philippines in 1916 and changed the way the game was played. Later called volleyball due to the fact that players "volleyed" the ball back and forth, the sport was embraced by the US military and was played often in their free time. Soldiers stationed all over the world played volleyball and taught the locals to play as well, inadvertently spreading the sport to many nations. Beach Game Emerges Volleyball was first played indoors, but it was brought out to the beach sometime in the 1920's. There is some debate about where the first beach volleyball game was played, but the two most likely theories are Santa Monica, CA and The Outrigger Canoe Club in Hawaii. Organized beach tournaments were played as early as 1948, but the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) did not emerge until 1983.
