Families play 6 vs. 6. Beach Volleyball crosses the Atlantic Ocean. It becomes the principal sport in a French nudist camp founded in Franconville, a north-western suburb of Paris. Volleyball Brief History
In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week.
In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head.
During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of "volleyball" was played.

History of Volleyball
General history of volleyball, evolution of the game, organizations
For the first time in the history of volleyball, volleyball was played in the Pan American Games in 1955. In 1957, volleyball was designated as an Olympic team sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In 1959, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) had volleyball be one of the eight competitions held in first University Games in Turin, Italy. In 1960, seven midwestern institutions formed the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA). In the 1960's, new volleyball techniques were developed. Off-speed hits, open hand tips, forearm passing, blocking at the net, and defensive plays such as diving and sprawling become a big part of the game. With the FIVB already having its own world championships, the FIVB directed its attention to the Olympic Games. Thanks to the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, a tournament took place in Sofia in 1957 during the International Olympic Committee meetings. As a result of this event, volleyball became an Olympic Sport. In 1964, volleyball was first played in the Olympics in Tokyo. Volleyball became a part of the Olympic Games, which allowed it to grow even more. Also, in the 1964 Olympics, the Japanese used a volleyball that consisted of a rubber casing with leather panels. A similar ball is used in modern volleyball competitions.

Volleyball History
Volleyball is more than a century old. It originated in the United States in 1895, earning its place as one of the most popular spectator sports in the world, ranking second only to soccer. It's easy to see why volleyball became so beloved. It began as a hybrid of some the most popular interactive ball sports, combining elements of baseball, basketball, handball and tennis. Today volleyball is one of the most international among sporting events, it's played in 211 countries around the world, and boasts about 800 million players worldwide. Invented by William G. Morgan, a teacher at the Young Men's Christian Association in Holyoke, Mass, volleyball was considered less physically demanding than its predecessor ball sports, and geared more toward the common-class citizen.

Did you realise that Volleyball History is one of the most searched topics in the volleyball community?
Well it's not really surprising when you consider just how popular it has become in it's relatively short life. It is estimated that about 17% of the world participate in volleyball, beach volleyball or recreational volleyball. The game of volleyball was devised by a YMCA physical education director,William G Morgan, back in 1895 but was originally called "Mintonette". Initial rules where pretty basic: - any number of players were allowed - any number of contacts permitted before a ball is passed over the net - court size was 25 foot x 50 foot with a net of 6 feet and 6 inches - each match had 9 innings with 3 servers per team per innings - if a serve hit the net it was considered a foul that resulted in a point loss - ladies were allowed to catch the ball and then throw it back (beginning of the "set")

Volleyball: History, Court and Equipments
Read on to know more about Volleyball history and information about the volleyball court and volleyball equipments… Volleyball is a team sport where 2 teams of 6 active players are separated by a high net and each team tries to score points against the other by grounding a ball on the other team’s court. The rules of the game of volleyball are quite extensive. Ideally, points are scored when one team grounds a ball in the opposing team’s court, or when the opposing team makes a fault. The game is made up of sets, each set being 25 points each. The first team to win 3 sets wins the game.
The ball is usually played with hands and arms. Sometimes players also use any other part of their body to strike or push the ball. A team can contact the ball up to 3 times before it crosses the net.
Mostly, volleyball is an indoor sport. However, other variations of the game, such as Beach Volleyball, have also developed over a period of time.
Volleyball History

Volleyball History and Facts
By Brenda D. Priddy eHow Contributor updated: July 25, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? Volleyball is a sport played around the world. Volleyball is one of the few sports created in the United States. It started in Massachusetts back in 1895 and has grown into one of the most popular sports both in the United States and around the world for both women and men. Volleyball is played in teams of two players (beach volleyball) or six (indoor volleyball) per side.
Origins
  • Volleyball was created as a low-impact version of basketball. William G. Morgan created the sport in 1895 at a YMCA in Holyoke, Mass. He hoped to create a game that combined elements of basketball, tennis, baseball and handball. This low-impact game was designed with middle-aged men who desired a less-strenuous sport in mind. The original name for volleyball was mintonette. People watching the game suggested the name volleyball because of the high volleying speed that playing created. The first official "volleyball" game was played in 1896; volleyball.com says as of 2009, there were 46 million Americans who played volleyball and 800 million worldwide who played at least once a week.
  • Modern Play
  • Modern volleyball has many of the same rules as the original game. The point system changed from the original 21 points needed to win down to 15 in 1917. Women now play the sport as well. The sport was first played in the Olympics in 1964. Since 1964, the base rules of volleyball have changed little, other than the addition of 2 person volleyball, according to volleyball.com.

      Volleyball History
      Origin of Volleyball
On February 9, 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts (USA), William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called Mintonette as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. Another indoor sport, basketball, was catching on in the area, having been invented just ten miles (sixteen kilometers) away in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts only four years before. Mintonette (as volleyball was then known) was designed to be an indoor sport less rough than basketball for older members of the YMCA, while still requiring a bit of athletic effort. The first rules, written down by William G. Morgan, called for a net 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 meters) high, a 25 × 50 foot (7.6 × 15.2 meter) court, and any number of players. A match was composed of nine innings with three serves for each team in each inning, and no limit to the number of ball contacts for each team before sending the ball to the opponents’ court. In case of a serving error, a second try was allowed. Hitting the ball into the net was considered a foul (with loss of the point or a side-out)—except in the case of the first-try serve. To protect the fingers of the ladies, they were allowed to catch the ball and then throw it back into play. After an observer, Alfred Halstead, noticed the volleying nature of the game at its first exhibition match in 1896, played at the Springfield YMCA, the game quickly became known as volleyball (it was originally spelled as two words: "volley ball"). Volleyball rules were slightly modified by the Springfield YMCA and the game spread around the country to other YMCA locations.
