The history of Olympic volleyball can be traced back to the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris , where volleyball was played as part of an American sports demonstration event. Consideration of its addition to the Olympic program, however, was given only ... after World War II , with the foundation of the FIVB and of some of the continental confederations. In 1957, a special tournament was held at the 53rd IOC session in Sofia Bulgaria to support such request. The competition was a success, and the sport was officially introduced in The volleyball Olympic tournament was originally a simple competition, whose format paralleled the one still employed in the World Cup : all teams played against each other team and then were ranked by wins, set average and point average. One disadvantage of this round-robin system is that medal winners could be determined before the end of the games, making the audience lose interest in the outcome of the remaining matches.

Volleyball History and the Evolution of the Sport
Volleyball originated in the United States in 1895 as a blend of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Today, volleyball has spread to 211 countries around the world, and is recognized as a truly international, widely played, popular sport. In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass. Morgan created the game of volleyball, at that time called mintonette. In 1896, the first official game of Volleyball was played at Springfield College. In the year 1900, Volleyball was popular enough that a new ball was customized for the sport. Five years later, Volleyball also spread to Cuba. This international signified the start of the Volleyball era. In 1907, Volleyball was presented at the Playground of America convention as one of the most popular sports. This was the first credit the sport received, and helped to further the sport recognition. Over the next five years volleyball spread to Central American countries.

14. The History Of Volleyball. Where Volleyball Started.
THIS WAS HOW VOLLEYBALL WAS INTRODUCED – FACTS AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE GAME. The game of volleyball, originally called “mintonette”, was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan
http://www.athleticscholarships.net/history-of-volleyball.htm
The offensive style of setting and spiking was first demonstrated in the Philippines in 1916. Over the years that followed, it became clear that standard rules were needed for tournament play, and thus the USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) was formed in 1928. Two years later, the first 2-man beach volleyball game was played, though the professional side of the sport did not emerge until much later. Not surprisingly, the first beach volleyball association appeared in California (1965), and the professional players united under the auspices of the AVP (American Volleyball Professionals) in 1983. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, American men and women took gold and silver medals in indoor volleyball competition. Four years later at the Olympics in Korea, the men once again scored gold. Starting in 1996, 2-man beach volleyball was officially introduced to the Olympics. Today, there are more than 800 million volleyball players worldwide, 46 million of them in the U.S. A TIMELINE OF SIGNIFICANT VOLLEYBALL EVENTS.
