Vodun is sometimes called Voodoo, Vodoun, Vodou.
Religions related to Vodun are: Candomble, Lucumi, Macumba, and Yoruba)
General background:
Vodun a.k.a. Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, Sevi Lwa Vodun was actively suppressed during colonial times. "Many Priests were either killed or imprisoned, and their shrines destroyed, because of the threat they posed to Euro-Christian/Muslim dominion. This forced some of the Dahomeans to form Vodou Orders and to create underground societies, in order to continue the veneration of their ancestors, and the worship of their powerful gods." Vodun has been freely practiced in Benin since a democratic government was installed there in 1989; about 60% of the population follows this religion. Vodun was formally recognized as Benin's official religion in 1996-FEB. It is also followed by most of the adults in Haiti who are also nominally Roman Catholic. It can be found in many of the large cities in North America, particularly in the American South.

Haitian Voodoo
Roman Catholicism is the official religion of Haiti, but voodoo may be considered the country's national religion. The majority of Haitians believe in and practice at least some aspects of voodoo. Most voodooists believe that their religion can coexist with Catholicism.
A large sequined Vodoo flag by the artist George Valris, depicting the symbol of the loa Loko Atison. Misconceptions about voodoo have given Haiti a reputation for sorcery and zombies. Popular images of voodoo have ignored the religion's basis as a domestic cult of family spirits. Adherents of voodoo do not perceive themselves as members of a separate religion; they consider themselves Roman Catholics. In fact, the word for voodoo does not even exist in rural Haiti. The Creole word vodoun refers to a kind of dance and in some areas to a category of spirits. Roman Catholics who are active voodooists say that they "serve the spirits," but they do not consider that practice as something outside of Roman Catholicism. Haitians also distinguish between the service of family spirits and the practice of magic and sorcery

Voodoo Authentica Ritual Troupe performance for Cuervo Nation
at the International House Event Room - CBD, New Orleans.
This party was slammin'! Lots of Cuervo Tequila of course. We had New Orleans Voodoo Priest Elmer T. Glover and Haitian Vodou Priestess Mama Lola, blessing locally handmade Voodoo Dolls for each attendee at our Voodoo Doll Blessing Stations. We set up several decor altars, hung Haitian Flags & Metal Work - had candles and table centerpieces throughout. Our psychic readers were fantastic & all the attendees really enjoyed their consultations. The finale was a great performance by the Voodoo Authentica Ritual Troupe which included, Voodoo Priest Elmer T. Glover, Mama Lola, Sunpie, Michelle Gibson, Kai Knight, Zohar Israel, Kamau Philips, Eric B. & Max and, of course, our star dancing boa, "Mojo!" After the snake dance, the whole crowd was ready to follow the troupe in one of our wildest Conga Lines ever!

INTRODUCTION TO VOODOO IN HAITI
Bob Corbett
March 1988 (Important Note) First and foremost Voodoo is a religion. It is the dominant religion of Haiti. Many of the practices and descriptions of Voodoo belief may sound to us like rank superstition, but then, imagine the beliefs of Christianity to people who know nothing about it. Tell them about the trinity or the resurrection, or the presence of Jesus in the eucharist. Any of these practices which very intelligent Christians believe in the fullest would seem no less superstitious to someone unfamiliar with Christianity. Thus I urge you to recognize that Voodoo is Haiti's religion, it is taken very seriously not merely by unlettered peasants, but many intelligent and learned members of the Haitian society believe as sincerely in Voodoo as do German theology professors in their Christianity. In no way do I expect you to believe in Voodoo; no more than I would expect you to convert to Islam if I taught a course on that religion. But, please do recognize that it is every bit as real a religion as the major religions of the world.

For US Arena Football League team, see New Orleans VooDoo Louisiana Voodoo , also known as New Orleans Voodoo , describes a set of underground religious practices which originated from the traditions of the African diaspora . It is a cultural form of the Afro-American religions which developed within the French Spanish , and Creole speaking African American population of the U.S. state of Louisiana . It is one of many incarnations of African-based religions rooted in West African Dahomeyan Vodun . They became syncretized with the Catholicism and Francophone culture of south Louisiana as a result of the slave trade . Louisiana Voodoo is often confused with—but is not completely separable from— Haitian Vodou and southern Hoodoo . It differs from Vodou in its emphasis upon Gris-gris , voodoo queens, use of Hoodoo occult paraphernalia, and Li Grand Zombi (snake deity). It was through Louisiana Voodoo that such terms as gris-gris (a Wolof term) and voodoo dolls were introduced into the American lexicon.

Voodoo is animist and spiritist , and a lot of Voodoo beliefs have to do with ancestor spirits. Some of it is based on Catholic beliefs, but most of Voodoo is from the Fon, Ewe, and Yoruba peoples. The word vodún is the Fon-Ewe word for spirit. In Voodoo many gods and spirits are prayed to or called on. Both spirits of nature and of dead people are important. The spirits of family member who have died are especially important. Voodoo often has rituals with music and dancing. Drums are used to make most of this music. In Voodoo people often believe that a spirit is in their body and controlling the body. Having a spirit come into is wanted, and important. This spirit can speak for the gods or dead people you love, and can also help to heal or do magic.

change African Vodu: the beginning of Voodoo
Voodoo came to places like Haiti and the United States as Vodu. Some people think Voodoo and Vodu are the same religion. Some people think they are not the same religion because Voodoo has changed some after it was taken from Africa. For example, African Vodu often has animal sacrifice (the animal is killed for the spirits), but this is not common in Haiti and never done in the United States. Another example is that an African
