("Voodoo" is also a: user thing by WWWWolf Mon Sep 18 2000 at 13:58:51 Ultima VII was a great game (many consider it the greatest in the series), but it had one bad thing: Voodoo memory manager Voodoo was Origin's answer to accessing Intel protected mode . Voodoo implemented what is known as a " flat real mode " (Meaning a flat memory model in real mode? I don't know the specifics, but I think this was accomplished by repeatedly toggling between x86 real mode and protected mode for accessing the memory, or some other crazy stuff like that). Apparently this was also only used to cache game data! This mode is different from the mode many other "DOS extenders" (like DOS4GW) did. The good sides? Uhm... Voodoo had a cool skull logo in the game credits, but truth to tell, it sucked what came to the system configuration aspect. The name became fairly obvious for the game players: Starting the game required appropriate amount of voodoo hoodoo to find out the correct parameter combinations in autoexec.bat

New Orleans Voodoo, New Orleans Voodoo History, New Orleans Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau, New Orleans Voodoo Spells! Voodoo New Orleans is stock full of folk tales of Voodoo practitioners who can transform into animals or cause animals to invade others. Rather than transforming into wolves, the Voodouns are generally reported as becoming cats. As late as the 1940s, stories of frogs, snakes, lizards and snails inside the bodies of the cursed flooded New Orleans. Family members bearing witness to these creatures expelling from the bodies and then disappearing shrouded numerous cases of unexplained deaths. In Jim Haskins book, Voodoo and Hoodoo, the author records actual spells that were supposedly used to invoke living creatures in the body. The spells usually involved the blood of the creature or a powder made from the dead creature being introduced into the food of the intended victim. Once ingested, the victim proceeds to grow living creatures in the stomach, veins or under the skin. Needless to say, there were spells for casting out living creatures in the body as well. Herbs were generally used to cleanse the body and drive away any living creatures that may have been inflicted!

It originates from the Fon word Voudon which means: the power; that who is invisible; the creator of all things. It is the infusion of Traditional African beliefs with Catholicism. Voodoo, since its conception in the western hemisphere, has been the target of countless opponents depicting it as being a sinister and abominable belief that possesses anyone who dares engage in its practices. Unfortunately this is due to the deliberate misconception of priests (orthodox) and the the misunderstanding of writers, anthropologists, scholars and many more who publish inaccurate and false information. Voodoo... An Introduction Voodoo sings with a voice long stilled and denegrated. It sings to the mind through the formal elegance and deep insight of its theology. It sings to the heart through the beauty and grace of its diverse pantheon of loa. A closed mind and a hardened heart can not hear, much less appreciate, the richness of this religious voice. As surely as the Great Wheel turns, the time of Voodoo has come again to light the fires of the soul and set them spinning in a dance of immanent creation. We have only to extend the open hand of acceptance to be rewarded with a spiritual sense of ecstatic participation. The ancient Mysteries uncoil and call to all those who would listen. From

Voodoo Vince [Xbox] Last fall, Microsoft released the genre-bending platformer Blinx: The Time Sweeper , a game that had innovation and graphical flair in spades but fell flat in its gameplay and lasting appeal. Still looking to establish a "youthful" franchise, Microsoft is trying its hand this year with Voodoo Vince , a creative game that borrows bits and pieces from the universal "platformer" genre and weaves them into a single experience. Maybe it’s the focus on fun this time around rather than innovation. Maybe it’s the humor that forms the backbone of this game. Maybe it’s just the law of averages that meant Microsoft would eventually get it right. Regardless, Voodoo Vince has come out in the end as more than the sum of its burlap parts; it has turned into the definitive platformer to own on Xbox. A platformer in the traditional sense of the word, Voodoo Vince has a simple story and a lovable main character. Players take on the role of a 10-inch, one-eyed voodoo doll named Vince whose creator has been captured and needs his help. As Vince makes his way through this "save the Princess"-style story, he’ll fight his way through various Bayou-inspired creatures by punching, spin-attacking and head-butting them in classic fashion. Yet Vince is a voodoo doll, so after collecting enough Mardi-Gras beads from fallen enemies, he can also unleash voodoo-inspired power attacks. These attacks range from self-mutilation (spearing your head with pushpins) to using environmental hazards (hopping into a blender) to "supernatural" happenings (a giant cow falling from the sky to pass gas on your head). Although these attacks are randomly generated, each of them has the same result: dispatching all the enemies within a given radius.

Got my mojo working but it just won't work on you
Someone who had practiced a Haitian form of Voodoo, once said of Voodoo in New Orleans, "Now I know what is different about Voodoo here: it's funky."
In the mid 19th century, voodoo was the rage in New Orleans, pursued in much the same way as the trendy of today latch on to the latest New-Age development, except that Orleanians paid much more than mere lip service to the practice of voodoo. Superstitious Creoles scrubbed their front stoops with brick dust to ward off curses and called regularly upon witch doctors and voodoo queens. For the most part, they sought advice on affairs of the heart and purchased gris-gris (voodoo charms), usually in the form of various love potions, powders, oils and ointments. For 19th century tourists, no trip to the Crescent City was complete without a visit to famed voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Believed to have been born in New Orleans in 1794, Marie Laveau was a free woman of "color," a Quadroon (African, Indian, French and Spanish). She became the most famous and powerful Voodoo Queen in the world, respected and feared by thousands, including the Catholic Church. A devout catholic, going to mass each day, Marie Laveau was permitted to hold rituals behind St. Louis Cathedral. It is believed that the Voodoo Queen Marie, in her youth, was persuaded by Dr John, a disreputable Hougan, to perform a Voodoo ceremony in the square in front of the cathedral. "As the drums beat wildly, Marie danced and undulated with her snake Zombi. The Voodouns danced wildly as Marie became possessed by the spirit of Dambala and writhed on the ground like a snake..."

Some scholars view voodoo as a type of animism , and to an extent that theory is true. The trolls’ religion takes a decidedly different dark bent than the shamanistic beliefs of the orcs and tauren , though. Trolls have a complex belief system involving malign spirits and their effect on the world, but no scholar has established what is truth and what is simply long-held belief. The Darkspear trolls come from a dark and bloodthirsty history of sacrifice, cannibalism and black magic. They consider spirits to be individuals much like living creatures. Spirits are greedy, hostile and dangerous. Trolls also believe their ancestors linger on as jealous spirits who miss the land of the living and require blood sacrifices to appease them. Trolls sacrifice and eat their enemies. They conduct these practices for two reasons. First, they believe the sacrifice of sentient creatures appeases malicious spirits. Second, they believe that after death, an enemy’s spirit can visit misfortune on its killer. By consuming the flesh of their enemies, trolls believe they can also consume their enemy’s spirit, or at least damage it enough to render it impotent.

This companion book to Psychic Phenomena of Jamaica goes into much greater depth as to the New World-African connection, and adds more material about Afro-Carribean religion in Haiti. The primary strength of this work is the careful documentation of the history and ethnography of Vodun. Williams includes numerous quotes from rare documents and books on the subject. The weakness is the lack of detailed information about the religious system of Vodun, which we now know to be as complicated (or more so) than any of the major religions. There is scarcely any mention of the loas, the pantheon of Vodun Gods and Goddesses, and he misses the importance of possession during the religious ceremonies. However, all things considered, this is required reading if you want to understand the background of Haitian and Jamaican Vodun, and the profound influence of imperialism, slavery and racism on its development.jbh. Remembering the hubono
    SEDLEY C ANTOINE
A MONUMENT has passed from the scene of Pan-Africanism and traditional African religion in the Caribbean. Sedley C Antoine, chief and high priest, or hubono, of Trinidad's Rada Community, has gone to join the ancestors. His passing on April 9, shortly before his 83rd birthday, marks the close of an era.
The Rada Community was founded in the mid-19th century by immigrants from Dahomey (now Benin) under the leadership of the first local hubono. Antoine was born into this milieu on April 30, 1918. He knew from early that he was destined to lead the community, and in 1948 he became the fourth hubono, a responsibility that he retained for the rest of his long and fruitful life.
In 1969, Antoine moved to Montreal where he worked as a cabinet maker, while continuing as a religious leader both in Trinidad and Canada. He returned to Trinidad every year to conduct the Rada Community's Thanksgiving ceremony in the week before Carnival.
Antoine's religious leadership was deliberately conservative. Observances were dominated by traditional drumming, and he led the chants in the ancestral Fon language. Visitors from West Africa sometimes remarked that this was how their grandparents practised.
