  • Scott Grogan says: 6/7/2010 at 5:04 pm my favorite general in the war has to Robert E.Lee. I admire him because at the beginning of the war he was offered the command of the Union army but refused it because he could not bring himself to fight against his native state and later when he accepted the command of the Army of Northern Virginina he felt he was defending his own state against a northern invasion. I also admire how took a ragged, under supplied army to almost victory over a army ten times his size. I also consider him a great man of common virture when he came to relization when all lost for the southern side and was able to surrender with great dignity.

Cold War General
It is currently compatible with fantastic East Front Soviet campaign. To make it that way, I started overwriting WWII units with corresponding Cold War units. I had to be quite consistent in what I was overwriting. In other words, overwriting a Pz I with a Leopard II would mean Leopard II's showing up all over the place a few years too early.
So the Soviet I-16 will now be a Soviet MiG-15. The Soviet IS-2 tank is now a Soviet T-80. A Tiger II is now a Challenger tank.
The Americans, British, French, Italians, Spanish and Germans will be played by the Germans. And so on.
But once I did that, I decided that I wanted to vary it a bit more than that, so in some cases, static ATs, for instance are now tanks. So if you play the Finland scenario now, there are Finnish T-72 tanks that come rushing out to greet you. And watch out for the Finn air force!

Robert E. Lee: Civil War General Review
If you like Civil War games, this one deserves a place by your computer. Robert E. Lee: Civil War General is one of the better Civil War strategy games released this year. While it shares an uncanny resemblance to Talonsoft's Battleground: Gettysburg, it does offer a number of impressive features. The game allows you to re-create several critical battles from Lee's career as the leader of the Army of Northern Virginia. A campaign mode strings the battles together while adding resource management to the list of challenges. Visually, Robert E. Lee: Civil War General is an impressive game. Small groups of infantry, cavalry, artillery, and specialists move across graphically detailed terrain. When units move into combat, you see a pall of smoke over the skirmish before the results are revealed. Video clips add an authentic feel to the action on the battlefield. In addition, the sound effects are good, but not awe-inspiring. Battle sounds include charging horses, marching troops, and firing guns. The period music does give you something to listen to as you watch your troops flee from their positions.

George Henry Thomas was born July 31, 1816, at Newsom's Depot, VA. Growing up on a plantation, Thomas was one of many who violated the law and taught his family's slaves to read. Two years after his father's death in 1829, Thomas and his mother led his siblings to safety during Nat Turner's bloody slave rebellion. Pursued by Turner's men, the Thomas family was forced to abandon their carriage and flee on foot through the woods. Shortly thereafter, Thomas became an assistant to his uncle James Rochelle, the local clerk of court, with the goal of becoming a lawyer. After a short time, Thomas became unhappy with his legal studies and willingly accepted an appointment to West Point. Arriving at age 19, Thomas shared a room with

Biography of Civil War General Ambrose Burnside Part 2
About the biography of Civil War General Ambrose Burnside, his mixtures of failures and bad luck as a military leader, his legacy of sideburns.
GEN. AMBROSE BURNSIDE (U.S., Civil War) Relieved of his command early in 1863, the unlucky general was next officially reprimanded by President Lincoln when, while heading the Dept. of the Ohio, he "court-martialed" ex-Congressman Clement Vallandigham for an antiwar political speech and closed the Chicago Tribune when that paper protested. Finally, Burnside was transferred back to the 9th Corps he had originally commanded when he enlisted (Burnside's Peripatetic Geography Class, as it was called because it traveled so widely on foot), only to face a final spectacular defeat at the battle of Petersburgh in 1864. Again it was a daring scheme that caused his downfall. Burnside approved a plan to dig a tunnel under the Confederate lines, fill it with high explosives, and attack at the moment the charges were set off. Sad to say, the tunnel was built, the attack made, and the attack repulsed. General Burnside was relieved of his command by a court of inquiry, in fact, nearly drummed out of the Army. All of Burnside's failures hinged on "ifs." If engineers had built pontoon bridges in time for his Fredericksburg attack, he might not have been routed. If it hadn't unexpectedly rained, his "Mud March" wouldn't have come about. If he had been allowed to use the crack black troops he wanted to at Petersburgh instead of an untrained white regiment, his attack there might have been successful. Perhaps these "ifs" account for the fact that he remained so popular, for he went on to be elected as governor of Rhode Island for 3 terms, 1866-1869, and U.S. senator for 2 terms, from 1875 until his death in 1881, aged 57.

    Game Description
In Robert E. Lee: Civil War General , you take the role of General Lee and issue commands to your army factions of infantry, cavalry, artillery and specialists as you attempt to lead the Army of Northern Virginia in individual battles or through a complete campaign, historically based on the American Civil War battles in which General Lee took part. Even though Lee was not present during the First Battle of Bull Run, the designers included this significant battle because of it's importance. Seven other scenarios (battles) are included, six of which are factual and involved Lee: Second Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) (1861), Antietam and Fredericksburg (1862), Chancellorsville and Gettysburg (1863) and The Wilderness (1864). A final fictional "what if" battle takes place with the Confederate forces trying to dislodge the Union Army from Washington, D.C. Robert E. Lee: Civil War General

Leonidas Polk: Southern Civil War General
By HistoryNet Staff Civil War Times Published: June 12, 2006 at 8:18 pm (Single Page) 7 comments
When the Civil War began, Bishop Polk traveled to Richmond to meet with his old friend, newly elected Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis not only welcomed him back to the army but also commissioned him a major general, even though Polk had never held a command and had been away from military life for more than 30 years. Thanks in part to these qualities, as well as his overwhelming popularity in the butternut ranks and his close friendship with President Davis, he was promoted to lieutenant general in October 1862.
