The documents that first served that purpose were the Articles of Confederation, drawn up by Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, as well as George Washington and other government officials. These documents were followed by the official US Constitution, which still exists today, and besides a few amendments, stands successful and in use. Although America had its Constitution in place there were still many problems that government officials had to face, one of the major ones of the time being slavery. The rich aristocrats in the south had many slaves to work their land and make them money through agriculture, but the northerners for the most part did not believe in slavery. As a sort of solution to the growing slavery problem the government decided to add a Bill of Rights to the Constitution , basically giving all people the same rights, and making slaves equal to all other people.

The Treaty of Ghent: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained
    Timothy Sexton Yahoo! Contributor Network
Apr 11, 2007 "Contribute content like this. Start Here On Christmas Eve of 1814 the Treaty of Ghent was signed, creating what amounted to an armistice where American and Britain stopped fighting and agreed to a restoration of all conquered territories following the War of 1812. Interestingly, the Treaty of Ghent studiously avoided addressing the American grievances that acted as ignition for the war in the first place, such things as controlling the aggression of certain Indian tribes and search and seizure laws on the high seas. If the War of 1812 was itself an exercise in how meaningless a war can be, the peace treaty was equally an exercise in the mediocrity of treaty drafting.
Strangely enough, the genesis behind the Treaty of Ghent was the Tsar of Russia. Tsar Alexander I was hardly what you would call eager to have his country square off against the might of Napoleon alone and wanted nothing less than to see England stretching its power overseas in a war almost guaranteed to go on too long and accomplish little. For purely personal political reasons, Tsar Alexander I sent a mediator to discuss drafting a peace treaty. Eventually American sent a party of five to Ghent, Belgium, headed up by John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay.
    Maine
for themselves. Needless to say, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay and the rest of the gang instantly rejected the British offers. The Treaty of Ghent appeared headed for a Mexican standoff; or at least a Belgian standoff.

    Assessing the Situation
In the wake of the failed campaigns of 1812, newly re-elected President James Madison was forced to reassess the strategic situation along the Canadian border. In the Northwest, Major General William Henry Harrison had replaced the disgraced Brigadier General William Hull and was tasked with re-taking Detroit. Diligently training his men, Harrison was checked at the River Raisin and unable to advance without American control of Lake Erie. Elsewhere, New England remained reluctant to play an active role in supporting the war effort making a campaign against Quebec an unlikely prospect. As a result, it was decided to focus American efforts for 1813 on achieving victory on Lake Ontario and the Niagara frontier. Success on this front also required control of the lake. To this end, Captain Isaac Chauncey had been dispatched to Sackets Harbor, NY in 1812 for the purpose of constructing a fleet on Lake Ontario. It was believed that victory in and around Lake Ontario would cut off Upper Canada and open the way for an attack on Montreal.

The War of 1812 marked the last time that America and Britain fought on opposite sides of the battlefield. Although the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war, addressed none of the issues why the United States went to war, positive consequences such as the gain of international respect and the defeat of Tecumseh and the Indians emerged for the Untied States. Before the War of 1812, America had very little international respect. Great Britain and France took turns preying on American trade vessels in the high seas. Britain went as far as to "impress" American citizens, which is the capture of American crew men from vessels because they were suspected of being fugitive British citizens. America was losing valuable imports and exports because of this practice, causing the economy to suffer. President Monroe stated impressment was a key factor in the decision to declare war on Britain. During the war, America won key battles that alerted the international community of its competence, such as Oliver Hazard Perry's naval victory and
