They are actually closing another branch library as well, Natural Sciences, for a total of 4 science libraries. Several years ago Natural Sciences Library absorbed the Forestry Library when it was closed. The only science libraries still open are Engineering Library and Mathematics Library.

BCR and LYRASIS BCR and LYRASIS have announced a Partners in Transition agreement, whereby BCR members will have access to LYRASIS products, services and training opportunities effective immediately. In addition, BCR members will transition to LYRASIS membership and will be considered LYRASIS members through June 30, 2011, without additional membership fees. This gives Washington libraries the opportunity to freely try LYRASIS services and member benefits for a year, after which libraries can decide if they wish to continue with a paid LYRASIS membership . Washington libraries may activate their LYRASIS membership by completing the BCR Transition Form As of July 31, 2010, BCR will no longer be taking library orders for discounted products and services. By this date, or shortly after, BCR will close its doors, and discontinue operations. LYRASIS' group discount and consortial savings services are the largest of their kind through a single source. Proving the power of group buying, LYRASIS offers members discounts on hundreds of products and services - electronic information resources, hardware, software, library management tools, and library supplies - from more than 100 vendors, including OCLC. The University of Washington Libraries has been building its Digital Collections since 1996, when the Libraries began digitizing materials in Special Collections. Materials in the Digital Collections are diverse and reflect the strength of the UW Libraries collections including materials about Native Americans, people and places of the Pacific Northwest as well as Napoleonic era caricatures and ephemera from the 1999 World Trade Organization Riots in Seattle. In addition to Libraries collections, there are images from faculty research collections including images of marine life; buildings around the world; and graffiti and other forms of urban communication. All materials in the Digital Collections are freely accessible to scholars and life-long learners around the world. The material types include digitized photographs, exhibits, essays, learning plans, maps, audio and video files and texts. The Libraries Digital Collections site runs on CONTENTdm, a media management software program that the Libraries was a partner in developing along with the University's Center for Information Systems Optimization. Collection-level records are available through the Libraries OPAC and OCLC's WorldCat. Metadata is mapped to Dublin Core through locally developed fields and is harvestable through the Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. Recent developments include the use of JPEG2000 to allow easy access to large blueprint and high-resolution image files.

    The University of Washington Libraries
' information and library material discovery-and-delivery platform WorldCat Local was launched in the spring of 2007. It has been a boon for the UW libraries (and UW library users) ever since.
"The impact on delivery has been impressive, with users requesting and getting far more materials than when we had separate silos for discovery and delivery," states the Abstract in the sixth issue of Library Technology Reports this year, "WorldCat Local at the University of Washington."
Written by three UW librarians who were integral to the WorldCat Local project at UW Libraries— Jennifer Ward, Pam Mofjeld, and Steve Shadle —this LTR issue provides an overview of the UW Libraries' WorldCat Local development, usability testing methods and exercises, and implementation.
"One of the strategic directions of the University of Washington Libraries Vision 2010 Strategic plan is 'Enhance user services,'" report the authors in the Introduction of the report. "Our goal is to 'meet user needs by providing access to resources and services at the point of need an in the users' enviroments.' We strive to meet this goal through this initiative: 'Build or integrate new tools and services for information discovery and delivery.'"
As the authors also note in the Introduction, library staff knew that creating such a tool would require partnership beyond the UW Libraries.

"Natives of Unalaska in their kayaks." Pen and watercolor drawing signed and dated by John Webber, 1778. Webber accompanied Cook on his third voyage. University of Washington Libraries Special Collections. Gift of Edward W. Allen, 1968. The Libraries' Special Collections and Preservation Division in the Allen Library offers access to unique, scarce, and rare published and graphic materials providing opportunities for studying items of scholarly interest in context. The origin of what is now Special Collections can be traced to a call by Librarian H. C. Coffman in 1905 for "everything relating to Washington." From this developed the Pacific Northwest Collection, one of the most comprehensive collections on the Pacific Northwest and Alaska in existence. Published accounts of travel and exploration to all parts of the world have always been a strength of Special Collections. Many of these holdings document early exploration of the Northwest, Western Canada, and Alaska. Illustrated here is the first edition of Meriwether Lewis's history of the Lewis and Clark expedition, published in Philadelphia in 1814. This set was donated by Elisabeth C. Miller in 1989. The pen and watercolor drawings of "Natives of Unalaska in Their Kayaks," by John Webber, was done in 1778 and presented to the Libraries by Edward W. Allen in 1968. Weber accompanied Captain Cook on his third voyage. Allen donations also included a Cook collection, maps, American atlases, and a large collection on the voyages of French explorer Jean-Francois de Galaup, Comte de La Perouse.
