Washington State Teacher Certification Requirements
By Lionel Braud eHow Contributor updated: February 12, 2010 I want to do this! What's This?
  • Teachers need certification from a college or university. Teacher certification requirements across the United States will all request some type of teacher training in an accredited college of university and the passing of a standardized test. Washington state differs very little in this regard, but they do offer different teacher certificates that can fit your unique circumstances.
  • Basic Requirements
  • The basic criteria for Washington state teachers are a bachelor's degree in their choice of subject they desire to teach. Candidates must also finish a teacher preparation program at the college or university level. Usually colleges like Heritage University in Washington offer certification programs within the content areas. For example, if you wish to teach English, then you enroll as an English education major. You are educated in your content area plus you receive pedagogical training for that content. The end result is you receive a teaching certificate after you complete the program. Additionally, you must pass the Praxis basic skills test, and you pass Praxis 2, the content area test.

How does one become certificated to teach in the public schools (K-12) in Washington?
To be qualified to teach in the public (K-12) schools in Washington, you need to earn three things:
A Bachelor's Degree . If you want to teach in Washington, you must earn a bachelor's degree, either before beginning or concurrently with* an approved teacher certification program. (*The concurrent option is only available if the college or university where you're pursuing your bachelor's degree has an undergraduate teaching option; UW does not).
Teacher Certification . This can be accomplished through any approved four-year college or university in Washington, and can be accomplished through an undergraduate program, or through a "fifth year" (post baccalaureate) program, or through a graduate (master's) program. The University of Washington-Seattle's Teacher Education Program (TEP) results in a master's in teaching (MIT) degree. There is no undergraduate or "fifth year" certification option available at UW's Seattle campus. Other schools in Washington do offer undergraduate and post baccalaureate (i.e. "fifth year") options for teacher certification.

    Alternative teacher certification programs debated
    by Ray Parker - Mar. 22, 2009 12:00 AM
States should do more to support alternative teacher-certification programs, in part by making licensure requirements more flexible, argues a report released this month by a Washington think tank. The report, by the Center for American Progress, highlights the ongoing debate about teacher preparation and the merits of fast-track routes into the profession. This debate has come to the Arizona Legislature, which could consider new alternative certification routes. In the following columns, an Arizona charter-school administrator argues for loosening the certification requirements in the state, while the president of the Arizona Education Association argues to more caution.

Dear Friend, On a beautiful late spring afternoon, this past year, a young woman received some devastating news. She had just gotten back her teaching certification test result. It was not what she had hoped for. In fact, it was not even close to her expectations despite her past experience and educational background. She had failed. Then she remembered her friends and felt even worse. She did not look forward to having to tell them her embarrassing news, especially after she had boasted that it was no big deal. She had been procrastinating about taking the exam because she hated standardized tests, and this only confirmed her hatred. "What will I do now?" she thought with dismay, slowly realizing the harsh reality of her predicament and its upsetting implications on her future.
    How to Solve the Problem
Unfortunately, this hypothetical situation occurs all the time. Someone thought they were going to breeze through the examination, told all their friends, made plans for their future, and then got an embarrassing reality check from an teaching certification exam.

STAR Program (Secondary Teacher Alternate Route)
    Middle School/High School
Saint Martin’s University Program Overview – updated November 3,2010
The South Sound Consortium partnership is seeking to enroll individuals with baccalaureate degrees and unique qualifications* who are seeking an alternate route to teacher certification. Candidates for teacher certification in this alternative route work with mentors in a middle school or high school and take courses designed to meet their needs through a state approved Teacher Education program. The nature of these courses varies depending upon the needs of the candidate and the requirements and expectations of both the district and the University. All candidates must meet all standards established by the State of Washington for residency certification and all standards established by Saint Martin’s University for program completion. Unique qualifications may include: Non-certificated district employees of school districts who hold Bachelor’s degrees (or higher) and who are seeking residency certification and endorsement in an area with shortages and/or professionals who have Bachelor’s degrees (or higher) in content areas that could lead to endorsement in a district-specific shortage area.
