about us workshops assessments region ... home Water Ecology of the Great Lakes Climate change may result in changes in lake temperatures which could affect fish communities as well as commercial and recreational fishing. Changes in the lakes temperatures may alter the food web make-up of lake algae; new exotic species may pose challenges for fishery managers and water utilities, as they try to provide safe, clean water to their communities. Results of assessment findings suggests that primary production in Lake Michigan will decline as the climate warms, which has implications for the entire food web supporting fish life. All other factors being equal, fish from all thermal guilds would benefit from climate change because of increases in the length of the growing season and because fish can move to deeper, cooler waters when surface waters exceed preferred temperatures. However, changes in deep-water oxygen and other habitat variables may prevent the more vulnerable cold-water fish from occupying their current, preferred thermal niches. Impacts on the Great Lakes are further complicated by the introduction of exotic species such as the zebra mussel, alewife, sea lamprey as well as unknown invaders of the future.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Fresh Water Ecology of Maharashtra Jump to: navigation search Components of the Maharashtra freshwater ecosystem The state of Maharashtra in India has several river major river systems including those of the Narmada Tapti Godavari and Krishna rivers. The ecology of these rivers and associated wetlands is covered in this article.

edit Introduction
Ecology is the science of interrelationship. Various components of the ecosystem interact together and thus maintain the proper ecosystem functioning. To create the holistic picture of the any given area one should have to consider various components of the ecosystem. These components could be Habitats (Land and Waterscapes), Species, people/institutions, people’s various practices, their various aspirations and issues ecological history etc. Here an attempt has been made to create a rather holistic picture of the fresh water ecological scenario of Maharashtra state. Maharashtra is well known for its varied biodiversity, habitat diversity, people and culture etc. In this page we are trying to put all available information regarding fresh water ecology of the Maharashtra region. The political boundary of Maharashtra is chosen only to facilitate the systematic data compilation. More Specifically in terms of river basins Narmada Tapti Godavari and Krishna basin is the premise of the information. Following components are selected for the compilation of the whole data.

These materials tend to accumulate on obstructions such as stones and the roots of plants. When the flow of water is slow, mud tends to accumulate at the sides of a stream and supports a characteristic flora and burrowing community of animals. § The churning action of the water ma ...

Water Ecology
Camping by the only permanent water for miles around, we seem to be just another flock of animals drawn automatically by need to a small semi dried out tributary of the Palmer River. The water in the remaining pools is so clean and clear, that fish can be clearly seen, and will, out of curiosity, approach a person who stands to watch them from the rocks. Delicate water plants growing in the pools help to keep this clarity in the water, by replenishing the oxygen in it which is continually being absorbed by the fish.
Unlike what we found closer to the coast, in the more mild weather, a heavy dew falls here each morning, due to the great change in temperature through the night. The ground and anything we leave exposed overnight becomes soaked through by moonset. As dusk approaches, flocks of birds moving back toward the water to settle for the night are deafening, and shortly after sunset, as they quieten, a throng of insects takes up the chorus, rivaling the birds in volume.
Almost all of Australia’s trees are evergreen, so leaf dropping is perpetual, rather than happening in the Autumn. In the still of the day, the sound of leaves releasing themselves from the acacias and box eucalyptus, and fluttering down through the parent trees, is as constant as the ticking of a clock. These sounds are brought to attention only when the approach of a light breeze is announced by the increasing rustle of dry foliage, as it joins its antecedents on the sandy, rocky ground.

The discipline of Freshwater Ecology can include lakes (limnology), streams and rivers, freshwater emergent wetlands (marshes) and ephemeral (seasonal) wetlands such as vernal pools. It is a broad subject that can include topics of water quality and quantity; inland fisheries; amphibians and other vertebrates associated with fresh water habitats; micro and macro aquatic invertebrates and aquatic vegetation. In Lake County when one thinks of freshwater ecology it is obvious to think of Clear Lake, California's largest natural body of water. However, other large and important bodies of water are within the boundaries of Lake County. These include: Lake Pillsbury located within the boundaries of the Mendocino National Forest

What is ecology?
Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment. Various different species living in the same place, interacting amongst themselves and with their environment together form an ecosystem. Within an ecosystem there are several food webs. A food web is an overview of which species in an environment consume which species (plant, animal or both). A healthy ecosystem has a variety of organisms that play different roles in various food chains. If the ecosystem loses one of its members, it can be crippled. For instance, if owls in the forest food web would die out, rodents might start to multiply at an enormous speed, causing them to overrun the area and finish resources that other animals also use.
Ecologists are people that study the interactions between organisms and their environment within food webs or other ecological relationships. Fieldwork is an essential component of this study. Laboratory experiments are also applied, under field conditions. Most of the time ecologists are involved in studying the natural environment and communities, but some are involved in applied ecology, using ecological knowledge in ecosystems directed by humans, commonly known as agro-ecosystems.
What kind of aquatic environments are there?

Research has been going on for more than ten years with the aim of providing information, for administration purposes, to the M.R.A.A.F., to the local authorities and to the Harbour Offices. Studies on population dynamics, growth and recruitment patterns. Recently, in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences, research has been initiated into the isotopic ratios and the mineralogical composition of the shells in order to better define the growth parameters, which vary considerably from zone to zone and from year to year. The results have shown the need to reassess some of the commonly accepted hypotheses concerning the rates of growth of Callista and Chamelea and the modality of recruitment of the latter. The examination of shell sections is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Geological , Environmental and Marine Sciences. The projects are mainly financed by M.R.A.A.F., by M.U.R.S.T and by local authorities. Scientist in charge D. Del Piero
