In fact, the water in the earth's biosphere is used and reused again and again. This is called water cycle or continuous movement of water between the earth and the atmosphere. It involves the following mechanisms:
  • Evaporation: changing of water from liquid to gas

Water Pollution
All around the world, countries are fighting to keep their water clean. Whether it's streams, rivers, lakes, or the ocean, countries have taken great measures to maintain a high quality of water for both human consumption and as a key component to the environment. We deal with the pollution problems and then decide on ways to clean it up. This valuable resource is the key to survival. Both plants and animals depend on water for their growth, so the water must be kept clean. The major contributors to water pollution can be classified in three categories, industrial, agricultural and municipal.
Examples of industrial wastes that can contaminant bodies of water are oil spills, acid rain, and waste run-off from industrial buildings and factories. Oil spills, even though they do not happen that often, can spill millions of gallons of its crude oil cargo into the ocean causing long term damage. The oil spreads out over the surface of the water, creating a deadly coating. It kills fish and animals and washes on shores polluting the beaches, shutting them down to the public. Once the oil has contaminated the water, immediate action must be taken to clean it out of the water. The most common procedure is to contain the oil with oil absorbent plastic booms and then skim the oil off the top of the water.

Explor e Play and learn Network Surf Go back W ater pollution W hen toxic substances enter lakes, streams, rivers, oceans, and other water bodies, they get dissolved or lie suspended in water or get deposited on the bed. This results in the pollution of water whereby the quality of the water deteriorates, affecting aquatic ecosystems. Pollutants can also seep down and affect the groundwater deposits. W ater pollution has many sources. The most polluting of them are the city sewage and industrial waste discharged into the rivers. The facilities to treat waste water are not adequate in any city in India. Presently, only about 10% of the waste water generated is treated; the rest is discharged as it is into our water bodies. Due to this, pollutants enter groundwater, rivers, and other water bodies. Such water, which ultimately ends up in our households, is often highly contaminated and carries disease-causing microbes. Agricultural run-off, or the water from the fields that drains into rivers, is another major water pollutant as it contains fertilizers and pesticides. Domestic sewage refers to waste water that is discarded from households. Also referred to as sanitary sewage, such water contains a wide variety of dissolved and suspended impurities.

Sewage Water Pollution
Sewage water pollution, one of the major problems faced by most cities nowadays, creates lot of health issues as well as environmental pollution. If the water is treated properly, it can prove beneficial. To know more information about sewage water pollution, read on... Sewage water pollution is one of the major problems in cities. The sewage water is drained off into rivers without treatment. The careless disposal of sewage water leads to a chain of problems, such as spreading of diseases, eutrophication, increase in Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), etc.
The waste water that flows after being used for domestic, industrial and other purposes is termed as sewage water. In ideal situations, the sewage water is channeled or piped out of cities for treatment . Bulk of the sewage contains water as the main component, while other constituents include organic wastes and chemicals.
Main Causes of Sewage Water Pollution
Improper handling of waste water, is the main reason behind the pollution of water . The sewage is drained off in large quantities into rivers. It slows down the process of dilution of the constituents present in the water; which in turn, stagnates the river.

What is Nonpoint Source (NPS) Pollution?
Questions and Answers
(taken from EPA's Polluted brochure EPA-841-F-94-005, 1994)
Q: What is nonpoint source pollution?
A: Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution, unlike pollution from industrial and sewage treatment plants, comes from many diffuse sources. NPS pollution is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and even our underground sources of drinking water. These pollutants include:
  • Excess fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides from agricultural lands and residential areas; Oil, grease, and toxic chemicals from urban runoff and energy production;

    After more than a century of abuse, plans are being made to bring Washington, D.C.'s "Forgotten River" back to life.

    An aerial view of the Anacostia River (far right) at its confluence with the Potomac River. The dramatic difference in color is due to the high level of sediments from CSOs and stormwater runoff.
    In the heart of the nation's capital, running from Bladensburg, Md., to Washington, D.C., is a river that is a poster child for America's tragically neglected, abused urban waterways. Although the eight-mile-long Anacostia River is surrounded by parkland, it is severely polluted by sediment, nutrients, pathogens, toxins and trash. Because the Anacostia is relatively flat and extremely tidal, it moves and flushes itself slowly, making it especially vulnerable to contamination. It's unsafe to swim in the Anacostia, or to eat its fish. Yet its troubles, though extreme, are hardly unique: Similar problems plague many of our country's urban and suburban rivers. It is a national embarrassment that the Anacostia often called "the Forgotten River" flows in the shadow of the Capitol building. Once a river that sustained abundant populations of fish, birds and other wildlife, the Anacostia is now impoverished and underused, flowing through some of Washington's poorest communities. But an effort to restore the Anacostia is getting underway. And if the District of Columbia, other local communities, the federal government, and businesses and individuals within the Anacostia watershed can work together to bring this river back, it can once again be an important asset to the community and a shining example the rest of the nation sorely needs.
