Drought Conditions Stressing Wildlife Green River
Source: Wyoming Game and Fish Department Green River WYOMING - A simple rule: Wildlife needs food, water, shelter and space in a suitable arrangement to survive. Unfortunately, continued drought conditions across the state have put that rule to the test. Much of Wyoming is facing a third year of severe drought conditions and the fifth year of below average moisture. South Rock Springs Game Warden Dave Hays says many watering holes have dried up and animals such as antelope and deer are on the move to find water. “If you have been down on Flaming Gorge Reservoir recently you probably noticed the antelope are congregating in areas that are popular camping spots,” said Hays. “The animals are thirsty and people need to give them space as they come down to more populated areas to water. That also means pets need to be kept on a leash or at least in control and not chasing game.” North Rock Springs Game Warden Allen Round says at least three big game animals were hit by cars in Rock Springs last week, because “There are more deer and antelope in town than usual.”

Drinking Water Research :: All Water Research CECS UCF Control of Distribution System Water Quality in a Changing Water Quality Environment Using Inhibitors
Project Proposal Abstract This document is a tailored collaboration proposal for evaluating control opportunities for distribution system water quality in a changing water quality environment using inhibitors. Tampa Bay Water (TBW), and its member governments of Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco Counties and the Cities of New Port Richey, St. Petersburg, and Tampa, are the participating utilities in this proposal. TBW provides wholesale drinking water to these member governments. J. S. Taylor will be the principal investigator (PI), J. D. Dietz and A. A. Randall will be Co-PIs from UCF. Chris Owen, Water Quality Assurance Officer for Tampa Bay Water (TBW) Operations, will be the TBW and MG project coordinator. The total budget for this project is $1,668,548. The project will require two years to complete. Periodic reports will be published every four months. roofed research facility. Three different doses of orthophosphate, zinc orthophosphate, blended ortho-polyphosphate and silicate inhibitors will be added to finished ground, surface, desalinated and a blend of the three TBW finished waters, which will be input to existing PDSs over a three month period. PDS input water quality will be changed every three months for one year. Inhibitor and inhibitor dose will be held constant. Water quality parameters necessary to evaluation release of apparent color, turbidity, total iron, biological stability of biofilms and bulk water, Cu-Fe-Pb corrosion, residual maintenance and nitrification will be monitored for one year. The capability of corrosion inhibitors to control distribution system water quality and stabilize chemical and biological films in a changing water quality environment will be evaluated by process, pipe material, bulk water quality and season.

How do we assess the quality of rivers? We assess the quality of rivers and canals by looking at nutrients, chemistry, and biology.  We sample about 7000 river and canal sites 12 times a year to test their chemistry and nutrients so we can see whether there are any pollutants and whether we need to target areas for improvement. We currently have a three year rolling sampling programme to test the biology of rivers. We sample about 6000 sites twice during survey years to see what species are living in the rivers. For chemistry and biology we classify A as being very good down to F for bad. Nutrients are analysed for nitrate and orthophosphate. We don't classify these as "good" or "bad" but just apply grades 1 (very low presence of nutrients) to 6 (very high presence of nutrients) We do this because rivers across the country naturally have different levels of nutrients and is not necessarily bad for the environment.

ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION WATER QUALITY ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION POLICY
The Environment Protection (Water Quality) Environment Protection Policy ("the Draft Policy") remains in draft form. The Draft Policy will repeal the Marine EPP, the Milking Shed Effluent Management EPP and the Vessels in Inland Waters Policy. What the Draft Water EPP proposes is a more consistent regulation of water affecting activities throughout the State. The objective of the Draft Policy is to achieve sustainable management of surface and underground water by protecting and enhancing water quality while allowing economic and social development. To this end the Draft Policy imposes mandatory obligations that will be expiated (an on the spot fine will be incurred) if breached. In addition, the Draft Policy sets non-mandatory requirements that the Environment Protection Authority can enforce by issuing environment protection orders. A range of mandatory obligations apply to the community at large, including an obligation not to cause environmental damage by discharging waste into water. In addition, the Draft Policy imposes requirements on specified industries (composting works, wineries, piggeries, STEDS schemes) enabling the regulation of smaller industries that are not currently caught by the EPAs licensing regime.

      Water Quality
The following section describes the water quality of study area of the Thames Estuary. Water quality is important benthic infauna and hence the feeding resource for waterfowl can be impacted as a consequence of poor water quality. Water quality data is predominantly collected by the Environment Agency in response to legislative requirements. Data is then compared against environmental quality standards (EQS), which are designed to protect the environment and human health. In the Thames estuary study area there are a number of applicable EC Directives which trigger a requirement for monitoring. These Directives include:: The water quality data for the Thames Estuary has therefore been largely derived from monitoring carried out by the Environment Agency. The exception is the information provided by the Food Standards Agency for data collected under the Shellfish Hygiene Directive. Back to Environmental Aspects
