62. Weather History - Mount Rushmore National Memorial
When planning a trip, the weather is an important part of the process. Weather in the Black Hills is often pleasant for the season.
http://www.nps.gov/archive/moru/travel_info/weather_hist.htm
Weather History When planning a trip, the weather is an important part of the process. Weather in the Black Hills is often pleasant for the season. Spring/Autumn
May and June are the two wettest months of the year. In late May and early June fog can obscure the view of Mount Rushmore for part of the day. Autumn and spring can be very short seasons between winter and summer. Summer
During the summer months afternoon thunderstorms are common but brief. The storms are caused by Orographic Lift. Orographic lift occurs when elevated terrain, such as mountains, act as barriers to the flow of air. As air ascends a mountain slope it cools, cooling often generates clouds and precipitation. At the same time warm air from the plains is rising. When these two bodies of air meet, the atmosphere become unstable and thunderstorms are generated. The average summer day is warm and sunny with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Winter
Winters are not as hard as many people expect. During the winter snow storms will occur but the snow usually melts within a couple of days. The Black Hills are often warmer than Rapid City and the surrounding plains in the winter because of temperature inversions. Cold air coming into the area is heavy and stays low over the plains. The relatively warmer air already in the area is lifted by the heavy mass of cold air making it warmer in the Black Hills. For Black Hills area road information call (605) 673-4948 or #511 on your cell phone.

Did Lisa win?
Norton Sound votes appear to have given Murkowski overwhelming support By Tyler Rhodes While the results of the U.S. Senate race between Republicans Lisa Murkowski and Joe Miller were still officially undecided this week, an examination of Norton Sound region voters showed a decisive backing of write-in candidates for the job. In each of the 15 villages making up the Norton Sound region, write-in votes led all others in the hotly contested three-way race. As a whole, 65.6 percent of the region's voters who went to the polls voted for a write-in candidate. It is largely assumed that the vast majority of those votes are for Murkowski, who ran an aggressive write-in campaign after losing the primary race to Miller.

  • - Tuscon, Arizona records 6.4 inches of snow.
  • - In the middle of the most severe November cold wave in history, Lincoln MT reached 53 degrees below zero, which established an all-time record low temperature for the nation for the month of November. The high for the day was one degree above zero.
  • - A blizzard across eastern Colorado drops 37 inches at Echo Lake and causes wind of 68 mph at Pueblo.
  • - Continuation of previous day's severe weather outbreak produced 22 tornadoes from Virginia to New York State. At 12:05pm, a straight-line wind gust blew down the cafeteria wall at the East Oldenham Elementary School near Newburg NY. 9 students were killed. A lady was killed in Manhattan when an I-beam was blown from a 21 story building.
  • - Hurricane warnings were in effect as late-season Hurricane Lenny was threatening Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Lenny was a Category 3 hurricane with top winds of 115 mph. Lenny was not only unusual because of its late-season strength, but because of its forward movement. Lenny was moving from west to east across the Caribbean. Lenny was the first hurrincane in recorded history to threaten Puerto Rico from the west, as most storms move east to west across the Caribbean. The unusual motion meant that some harbors normally protected from hurricanes were threatened.
