Common features include an overshooting bulge through the top of the storm and a long life cycle - typically 2 hours or more. Is consists of mesocyclones which are rotating updraughts within the thunderstorm. Cumulonimbus Incus Cumulonimbus with an anvil typically known as a thunderstorm. Also known as Cumulonimbus Capillatus. Cumulonimbus Calvus Cumulonimbus or large cumulus with basically no anvil although the tops may become striated. Cumulus Congestus Cumulus clouds which are markedly sprouting and are often of great vertical extent with tops resembling a cauliflower. Their heights exceed the dimensions of their bases. Cumulus Mediocris Cumulus clouds of moderate vertical extent, the tops of which show fairly small protuberances. The base is a similar in width to the cloud height. Cumulus Humilis Cumulus clouds of only a slight vertical extent. They generally appear flattened. Their bases are much wider than the their heights.

Updates
It has been a long time between updates but you'll be pleased to see I have added another 140 or so shots to the galleries. The whole of 2009 had very few opportunities for storm chasing, let alone lightning photography. January 2010 started poorly but a few decent events have thankfully now occurred. I really enjoy daytime, sunset or dusk colours with lightning. Even though there have not been many storms they have provided some great timing for backgrounds other than a night sky of black. Click a photo to browse the associated gallery. Photographs are available for commercial use - please refer to the for information. Purchase a framed or unframed print of your favourite lightning photo. They make beautiful gifts! Severe cold weather photography
Posted: 5 Jan 2001 Severe cold weather photography - Mountaineer, diver, photographer, lecturer and author, Jack Jackson shares his wealth of experiences in this extreme weather photography guide Author Jack Jackson
Much is written in magazines about cold weather photography but the advice is often inaccurate, given by journalists or photographers who have never really experienced really cold conditions! Here Jack Jackson offers advice from real world experience.
Simple point and shoot cameras and cheaper SLR cameras will be unreliable in really cold conditions and due to the reduced performance of batteries it is best to use mechanical cameras rather than electronic ones. Modern cameras do not require winterization with thinner lubricants for cold conditions but do get them serviced before you go.
Where batteries are used, Silver Oxide is best where button cells are required and Nickel Cadmium or Lithium batteries are best for heavier use, always carry several extra spares, kept in a warm pocket.

Fall is a great time of year to explore weather photography as the weather is delightfully mild, making it ideal to head outdoors and capture images of the changing season. You can also enjoy the wide variety of weather that comes with the beginning of fall and practice your skills shooting in all types of conditions. Safety should always be your first concern when photographing weather but there are other important factors to consider. Lightening is the most dangerous weather condition to photograph but the risk can be well worth it when the final images are processed. Because of the unpredictable nature of lightening and speed in which it strikes, it is vital you have the right equipment when capturing these images. The most important equipment you can take is a camera with a rapid shutter speed. Some experts believe digital cameras are not the best option for photographing lightening because of the limitations on shutter speed. If you are struggling to capture the images you desire, you may want to try a camera with a mechanical shutter.   Like lightening, rain images can be emotionally acute and visually appealing when the right equipment is used.  Using a slow shutter speed can help you avoid the issues with low lighting but be sure to use a tripod to capture clear images. A slow shutter speed and unsteady hand will give you a blurred final image. Explore angles when shooting rain. Shots of puddles angled to include reflections can make for interesting and unique pictures. When shooting rain, keep your eyes open for the opportunity to shoot a rainbow. Use some of the same guidelines , like a slow shutter speed to maximize the contrast in light and dark surrounding the rainbow, and you will have lasting beautiful images.

Posted on 29. Jan, 2009 by Paul Burwell in Equipment Everything Instructional Group of horses running through a snowy field If you’ve ever photographed in cold conditions (we’ll use below freezing as a definition for cold), you might have run into the problem of having the viewfinder in your camera fog over.  This can occur when one’s breath inadvertently ends up directed towards the viewfinder.  The problem can be further exasperated when you’re an eye-glass wearer.  Well, do I have a solution for you? Bendy Straws Get yourself some bendy straws.  When you’re photographing in cold weather, use the bendy straw as a kind of snorkel to direct your hot steamy breath well away from your viewfinder and/or your eye glasses. I just used this technique the other week in -20 Celsius conditions and it worked great.  Both my view finder and my glasses remained fog free. Do you have some cold weather photography tips?  This is the place to share them.
