A dandelion is a common weed all over the world, especially in Europe, Asia and the Americas. A weed in a general sense is a plant that is considered by the user of the term to be a nuisance, and normally applied to unwanted plants in human-made settings such as gardens lawns or agricultural areas, but also in parks, woods and other natural areas. More specifically, the term is often used to describe native or nonnative plants that grow and reproduce aggressively. Generally, a weed is a plant in an undesired place. In Weeds of the West the authors determined which plants to include in the book based on the following criterion, attributed to J.M. Torrell: A plant that interferes with management objectives for a given area of land at a given point in time. Weeds may be unwanted for a number of reasons: they might be unsightly, or crowd out or restrict light to more desirable plants or use limited

Everyone knows of some skilled and outstanding weed scientists in the western region who have contributed a great deal over the years and deserve our recognition and appreciation. One way to recognize such persons is to nominate them for a WSWS award. Please take the time and nominate an individual for one of awards below:
  • Outstanding Weed Scientist Outstanding Weed Scientist - Early Career Weed Manager Professional Staff

The WSWS is soliciting requests for proposals from the membership for service as editor for the Proceedings and/or the Research Progress Reports. Appointment to these positions will be for a three year term beginning in 2011, with potential reappointment by the Board of Directors. The position will include a $750 stipend per year. Both publications will be online and will no longer be published in a hard copy form. Authors of abstracts will submit titles and abstracts through a new online program and development of the proceedings will be through this online program. Submission of Research Progress Report will be the same as we have done in the past for now.

Moderate to Severe Populations of Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth in 2010 Cotton
Glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth continues to spread rapidly across Georgia. By 2011, this pest will likely infest all Georgia cotton-producing counties. Major factors influencing this rapid development of resistance include resistance to glyphosate and Staple, heavy seed production (up to 450,000 seeds per female plant in dryland cotton), and spread of resistance by seed (equipment, etc.) and pollen (wind).

The Western Society of Weed Science holds its annual meeting every year in the first part of March. Attendance is welcome to anyone interested in various weed science issues. In the past, participants consisted of producers and university, industry, state and federal personnel. We encourage participants from any discipline to attend the meeting and become involved in the society. The meeting program consists primarily of poster and oral paper presentations. Some years symposiums or other special sessions are organized on topics like herbicide resistance or invasive weeds. Students are highly encouraged to present their research at the annual meeting. This participation helps become acquainted with how a professional society works and gives future full members valuable experience presenting scientific data. An awards luncheon and social period provide participants the opportunity to visit with scientists from other areas of the western United States and beyond. Updates from industry personnel provide current information on new technology to help battle weeds.

Innovative research and leadership in education and outreach are hallmarks of faculty, staff, and students of our department.
RESEARCH
Our faculty range from basic to applied scientists who bring a connection between findings associated with the smallest molecule and state-wide epidemics of disease or invasive plants. Molecular genomics of plant/pathogen interactions, physiology of herbicide resistance, and characterization of plant molecular response to abiotic stresses are a few of the research endeavors of our faculty.
EXTENSION
Engagement is not just about reaching people with a message, but in changing or improving their lives through adoption of that message. In order to disseminate research results and train practitioners, our extension faculty present hundreds of talks and seminars each year, post informative articles in local, state, and national magazines, and fill thousands of questions through email, phone, and personal contact. Our diagnostic labs provide expert advice to stakeholders across the Commonwealth.
