Child Welfare / Youth Services
Providing Culturally Competent Juvenile Justice Services to the Latino Community

Edward Pabon, DSW
Vol. 1 No. 1 p. 38 Full Text Available
The interaction between traditional juvenile justice service providers and Latino youngsters and families in this society has been somewhat impersonal, structured, and formal, with minimal give-and-take questioning and relevant discussion. The resultant evidence continues to suggest that services have not been sufficiently responsive to the needs of minority clients, especially Latino youngsters. Juvenile justice providers need to understand and incorporate cultural value preferences, such as familialism, allocentrism, and personal distance, in their relationship with Latino clients in terms of building therapeutic contacts. Extent : 3.5 linear ft. Boxes Content : Legislation, correspondence, news clippings, "Dear Colleague" letters, reports, staff notes. Arrangement : Arranged alphabetically by issue and chronologically within. Description The series of Health and Human Services Issue Files comprises files on Medicare and Medicaid, AIDS, Welfare Reform (see also Series I.A. TC Personal Files), and Health Care Reform as well as lesser issues. These files highlight the broad range of issues that came before Congress during Carper's ten years in the House. The Health and Human Services files are broken down into smaller topical groups: General Issues, Disabilities, Health Care Reform, Medicare/Medicaid, and Welfare Reform. General Issues contains information regarding the appropriation of funds for fiscal years 1990 through 1992 in areas such as AIDS research, Alzheimer's disease, alcohol and drug abuse, and health care for the elderly, homeless, and mentally ill. Two notable issues in this category are the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1990, and the general distribution of funds in 1991. Congress wrangled over the issues of AIDS in the early days of anti-AIDS discrimination legislation, and the attempt to create a satisfactory compromise for maternity, paternity, and sickness leave. Carper co-sponsored many of the bills in this series and sponsored H.J. Res. 304, designating the week of May 10, 1988 as Stuttering Awareness Week.

Migrant tide is too much, says Field
By Philip Johnston and Toby Helm 12:01AM BST 29 Jun 2006 Politicians are ''living on borrowed time'' over the unprecedented levels of immigration, a senior Labour backbencher said yesterday. Frank Field, the former welfare reform minister and a highly respected party veteran, said present policy was ''unsustainable''. He is the most significant centre-Left figure to warn about the apparently untrammelled influx of foreign workers and their families. Ministers say there is ''no obvious limit'' to the numbers who could come in and maintain that the economy needs migrants to function. But council chiefs said this week that services across the country were finding it difficult to cope with the sudden arrival of hundreds of thousands of people for whom financial plans had not been made. Related Articles They also questioned the basis of the Government's approach when Britain had more than seven million people described as ''economically inactive''.

Field slams Labour for wrecking final salary pensions
Frank Field: demanded a 'lifeboat operation' now By Gary Parkinson, Banking Correspondent 12:01AM GMT 19 Feb 2002 Comments FRANK FIELD, the former minister for welfare reform, yesterday attacked the Government's pension strategies for contributing to the collapse of final salary schemes. He urged the Government to launch a "lifeboat operation" for occupational pension schemes, and warned: "If the Government continues to stand idly merely reciting the list of reviews it has established, there will be few final salary schemes left by the end of the year." COURSE OBJECTIVES The purpose of this course is to encounter the role of women in the United States from the viewpoint of economics within a multicultural context. The course focuses on the economic trends, theories, and political responses to three major aspects of women’s role in the United States economy: the labor market, the household, and poverty. There will be references to women in an international context (mainly for comparative purposes) but the course will focus on the domestic economy. On e goal of the course will be to familiarize students with economic tools to inform the development and evaluation of policy, NOT to create economists. As such, the only tools that are required on the outset are curiosity, determination, respect for your peers, and an open mind.
