London Guide
Touring Online Planning Resources ... Scotland There are many great traditions of Wales, but three stand out that make it culturally distinct from its neighbors: the Eisteddfod, the Noson Lawen and the Cymanfa Ganu. Of these, the Eisteddfod is probably the most ancient and certainly the most popular. Most towns and villages conduct an annual Eisteddfod in one way or another. It is simply a competition, but the word translates as a "Chairing," with the winner being awarded a chair upon which he is ceremoniously crowned to great acclaim. Winners of local eisteddfodau (pl) go on to compete on a county or regional level, eventually reaching the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales (Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru ) in which they compete with others from all parts of the country. The "National" is the largest folk festival in Europe: held in a different town the first week in August each year. Alternating between a venue in South Wales one year and North Wales the next, it draws vast crowds to enjoy its week-long activities.

The Cambrian Benevolent Society of Chicago
The Cambrian Benevolent Society enjoys a long and diverse history. It was organized in 1853 in response to the needs of many Welsh immigrants who came to the city ill-prepared for their new life. Its first priority was to raise funds to assist fellow countrymen who found themselves in indigent or unfortunate circumstances. Over time Cambrian has assumed a more cultural role as it strives to preserve a Welsh identity within the city. Click here to read more

Welsh culture
The Welsh language unravelled, culture in Wales exposed, and just what was Cool Cymru? There are several dialects of Welsh, most audibly north and south. The road signs are bilingual, giving both the Welsh and English versions of the text and placenames. The Welsh language (Cymraeg) continues to flourish within Wales thanks to Welsh-medium education, a lively media industry and the enthusiasm of people living in Wales. The rights of the language have also been helped by bilingual and language policies made law by the Government. The daffodil and the leek are national flowers of Wales. One species of daffodil, narcissus obvallaris, is found only in a small area around Tenby. According to legend, Saint David ordered his Welsh soldiers to identify themselves by wearing leeks on their helmets in an ancient battle against the Saxons that took place in a leek field. This may be a myth, but the vegetable certainly has enjoyed a lengthy association with the country. In Henry V, Shakespeare refers to wearing one as an "ancient tradition", and in the same play Henry tells Fluellen he is wearing a leek, "for I am Welsh, you know, good countryman".

30. Malad Valley Welsh Festival --- June 27 & 28, 2008
Established in 2005, the Malad Valley Welsh Society meets monthly to discuss Welsh culture, language, music, and history. It also sponsors the Malad Valley Welsh Festival annually on the weekend before the 4th of July in Malad, Idaho.

Malad Valley Welsh Festival
Malad City, Idaho
The residents of Malad Valley would like to invite everyone to the Malad Valley Welsh Festival this year. We are celebrating the rich Welsh heritage that has contributed to the quality of life in the settlement of this beautiful valley.
Welsh pioneers were the first to settle in the Malad Valley in the 1860s. One of their many Welsh traditions was an annual cultural arts event called an eisteddfod , with roots going back 900 years. This event was held locally for many years until it was discontinued before World War 1.
Today, Malad Valley has the largest per capita concentration of people of Welsh ancestry outside the country of Wales itself. For that reason, many residents of the Valley wanted to reestablish their Welsh roots. In 2005, after a 90 year break, this annual cultural event, now called the Malad Valley Welsh Festival, once again became a reality. The 2007 Festival exceeded all expectations and goals set forth by the organizing committee and that of the Malad Valley Welsh Society which was formed in 2004. MALAD VALLEY WELSH FESTIVAL

WELSH CULTURE . THE DRAMATIC HISTORY OF ITS ANCIENT ORIGINS. By Ellis Griffith . G EOGRAPHICALLY, Wales is on the western side of the British Isles, bounded by the sea
http://www.ensignmessage.com/archives/welshculture.html
WELSH CULTURE THE DRAMATIC HISTORY OF ITS ANCIENT ORIGINS By Ellis Griffith G EOGRAPHICALLY, Wales is on the western side of the British Isles, bounded by the sea on three sides, and by England on the fourth. Some of the most ancient and interesting castles in Great Britain are found along this border - I am never sure whether they were built to keep the English out or the Welsh in, but there they are, some just gaunt ruins, but others excellently preserved as national monuments. Like other ancient Celtic cultures, Wales was a matriarchy. Perhaps that is why only the women have a national costume. Although Wales is no longer thought of as a matriarchal society, "Our Man" is still a pretty powerful lady. Ask any Welshman. The Welsh language, Cymraeg , is a member of the Celtic branch of the Indo-European languages. It is an old language, and was the ordinary spoken language of the people of Britain before the Roman occupation and throughout the 400 years of that occupation. Even as it is spoken today, it is likely that Welsh could have been fairly well understood by the Britons who fought Julius Caesar in 55 B.C. It stems from a Celtic language which probably had its beginning in the upper Danube valley and from there spread in many directions over Europe and even to Galatia in Asia Minor. That was some centuries before ancient Rome started on her career of imperial expansion.
